    What healthy-looking plants! Kale chips, I have to have a big bowl every day, they are the best plant in my view, and totally easy to grow....only prob here in Aotearoa New Zealand is we have a white butterfly that affects all brassica which during summer makes it impossible to grow without cover.

    Within the last 20 days I've binge watch all of ur videos from the very first video about low tunnels to this video.
    I aspire to be like your family (at 16 i still have homeschool and growing up to do.) and once next growing season is here (Canadian here, so last frost is mid May first frost is beginning of October) i will be blowing some life into mother's neglected garden box and slowly building my homesteading knowledge.
    Thank you for taking the time in your crazily busy schedule to teach us and show us insight on the homesteader's life.
    Also your family is very humble, Joyful and kind, you've taught your children amazingly on how to be kindhearted and hardworking (something we Sadly don't see often enough) and both you and Cam have a lovely connection with each other.
    Lots of love and good prayers your way,
    N.B. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

    Time and weather, just do your best because we do not control either. We went from frost two weeks ago then back to the hi 70's and 80. I'm looking for my first high tunnel. Fitting it in and getting the county to OK it is my first step. I hope to do hot beds inside because I will be limited to a tunnel that will probably only be 20 X40. God bless y'all and keep growing.

    Good day to you, Becky!
    I know this question is not about this video, but I figured it is the best way to reach you! I was wondering if your sister is going to be putting a new Homestead Garden Journal and Planner out for 2024? I have the 2023 version, but I don't see an updated one on Amazon as of yet. Thank you for your time! I look forward to every video you put up!

      Yes! When she was visiting me she showed me the new version. She updated it based on feedback and it has a lot of new information too. I’m not sure when she is planning on having it up and ready but I’m assuming it will be very soon since it is for next year.

    I am in constant awe at everything you do especially with 5 kids including a baby, your helpful husband, your gardens etc etc. cooking from scratch is one thing but canning & preserving what you grow can be exhausting. I just got a freeze dryer & hope you do more videos using yours. Can you recommend a good freeze drying book? And are there certain veggies you prefer dehydrated vs freeze dried? I'm looking at lots of potatoes, garlic & jalapenos that need to be processed. Any suggestions? I did dehydrate some garlic before I got the FDyer. Thanks & Happy Thanksgiving!

    • @TheSeasonalHomestead
      @TheSeasonalHomestead  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The only freeze drying book I have is from Harvest Right. They sell one and it’s pretty good. From what I hear squash is better dehydrated than freeze dried. I like pretty much every other vegetable freeze dried more than dehydrated!

    So do you not cover your strawberries? I'm so intrigued! I've been bringing my strawberries into the garage every year 😅

    • @TheSeasonalHomestead
      @TheSeasonalHomestead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No cover for strawberries right now. If you’re in a cold climate you might need straw over the top but where I live it doesn’t usually get cold enough for them to be damaged. The threat comes more in Spring when they are flowering and it’s going to frost, then I do cover them so the future fruits are not damaged by cold.

  • @veena4245
    @veena4245 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    In my winter garden in Boston, I don’t cover anything until it’s below 25F at night consistently. Meanwhile all my plants not only survive, but are learning to adapt to the much colder temperatures coming up. I was surprised that you are covering cold-hardy vegetables at the first frost. Please explain your reasoning.

    • @TheSeasonalHomestead
      @TheSeasonalHomestead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was a 15F frost. I’ve had a first frost that temp kill my kale. I think because of the shock from our hot temps to cold. Like you were saying the cold temperatures help them adapt but sometimes when it’s a big swing warm to freezing they aren’t ready. I had too much work into it and didn’t want to take the risk.

    • @veena4245
      @veena4245 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheSeasonalHomestead now I totally understand, thank you for explaining! It’s been crazy weather indeed. We haven’t had such big swings over here, and not less than 25F at night, but it’s been unpredictable at times.

    Did you make the low tunnel or was it a kit? If you made it, how did you bend the wires? Can Cameron show us how he made that slip/tension knot on the low tunnel? where do you mainly get your row plastic/covers and materials for high tunnel and low tunnel? I really need help. 😵‍💫

    • @TheSeasonalHomestead
      @TheSeasonalHomestead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Cathy! I have everything linked in the video description, including a video from last year when we set up the same "quick hoops" but we showed a lot more detail in that one. The smaller wire hoops inside the high tunnel are new, and I've also linked them in the video description. Neither was a kit. I will see if Cam can make a TH-cam short showing how the knot is made!

    • @TheSeasonalHomestead
      @TheSeasonalHomestead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I cover for below freezing. If it’s above freezing I uncover. I am watering with a hose when necessary. When it’s really cold the plants don’t need to be watered their roots will dig deep for it. I do have drip irrigation but don’t use it in freezing temperatures.
