MELTING COPPER CASTING COPPER COINS WITH HOMEMADE STEEL MOLD

- I machined a solid piece of steel at work and wondered if it would make a good mold ,so today I'll try and pour molten copper into the steel mold. I'm sure of the work perfect but let's see.
I have thought about a basic stamp to just mark these coins , something pretty simple to start with. I was going to machine up a piece of steel much like this mold but a bit bigger that would just sit on top like a lid and once I pour the metal while it's still red hot but not quite set I would put the larger mold lid on top and hit it with a big bloody hammer . I would have a simple design in the lid mold to stamp into the top of the ingot . Alternatively I could engrave a design in the base of the steel mold I pour into (obviously it would be a mirrored design so it transfers the right way around once the ingot is removed) . - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

nah not quite I know better than to bite into copper Maybe solid gold as that's a lot softer (even though the Olympic medals arnt solid gold (but I know what you mean) Yes they feel awesome in the hand nice and heavy and smooth . There great once they have had a polish on the buffer wheel.

MrLeonard55 . I could probably heat the mold up a lot more and that would help with the marks on the copper coin base as the lines and marks are from the copper cooling in the mold as soon as it's poured. Alternatively I could just give the coins a bit more of a sand and polish and that would give it a more mirror finish and the pitting would be gone .a bit more work as I only hand sand these atm and haven't bought a power sander yet but I'm sure they would look a lot better if I did .

Very nice I tried copper in something that was not a regular mold. I had success with Aluminum, but copper became part of that mold. Oh Well. Nice video. #BigstackD

Where is the best place to find all this copper? Do you find it yourself? Or do you buy it off scrappers?
Hey buddy actually Ive worked on the same industrial site for 20 years and I get all my cables from my electrician friend and out of the scrap bin when I’m allowed to go through it , I started collecting my cables probably two years before I started melting so I have a decent stockpile but unfortunately I cannot get many more cables as often as I would like as the bosses have now stopped allowing us to take them😒but I still get a tiny bit here in there👍🏻
Very interesting using a metal mold like this. Can i ask if the bottom of the ingot come out flat or curved?
the bottom of the coins came out great they are flat but the edges are slightly curved . next time i make 1 of these molds ill make the base with a slight curved edge on the base so the top and bottom look the same. The flat base takes nothing away from how good they look and feel in your hands i recon :)
Sounds good, I was thinking of making something similar after seeing your video as i have been playing around machining some of the brass i have cast. Having a cast with a reasonably flat base to start with would be beneficial.

+Jeff Geo Man I just use my drill wire brush and then sandpaper from 120-600-1200 grit then buffer wheel it. I have really only started in the last few months to sand my ingots up to a nice shine , when I started melting I never really thought about it.

+Jordan Abbott yeah mate I have dipped me toes in the sand casting pool a few times with results from each end of the spectrum and I wana jump back in (and will be again soon) I just have soooo much copper to melt I thought if I got most of that melted down i could cast directly from my clean ingots and get me some better sand castings👍🏻😁. Is it better to wait till the foundry is at temp or put the metal in at a low temp and then build up to a high temp?
+waterandafter . I always let it heat up with the metal in it and sometimes pre-heat the metal before I even turn the foundry on its saves so much time and gas 👍🏻😁

+Jeff Geo Man bloody oath it does it normally take me easily over an hour and half to melt copper.
So ive shined up my first few copper bars with some muriatic acid followed by a wire brush and then 120, 320, 600 grit wet sand paper. I made a copper coin and it looked so shiny and then two days later its dark. how do i get the copper to keep this shine? Will polish to finish it off accomplish this?
there is a few products available called EVERBRITE or ProtectaClear and they wwill prevent tarnish and corrosion on brass and copper.i am yet to use these but i recon some type of clear lacquer would work great . My bars are starting to go dark aswell so i really should look into getting something for them when i get time. Im sure someone at a local hardware store could point you in the right direction about some type of clear varnish or lacquer to use.:)

Yeah it’s definitely natural but I recon if you can some how block the oxygen hitting the copper in the way of a clear lacquer it would probably stay clean n shiny for ever, 😁👍🏻

+carnipicus no idea my friend I havnt quenched any of my ingots in oil ever.
I will be doing a vid in the near future on quenching in water vs oil vs no quench and see if that does anything to the ingots By way of look and strength so stay tuned👍🏻😁

your doing better with your pours if you use a degassing agent to eliminate gas pockets you would get a smoother more polishable pour then you could press or stamp a cool design on those coin and be worth a big premium on the market

bigstackD thats a great idea but dont for get you need a degassing flux in your copper that will thin it out and gas pockets in your coins.
sorry it will help to remove the gas pockets so less holes in your coin blanks

Nah matey I made this mold on a lathe at work , I just wondered if I could pour molten copper or brass into a steel mold and see if it would release the metal like a normal graphite mold. I don’t sell any of my molds or castings and just keep them for myself. And I’ll never ever sell my ingots or scrap to a scrapyard I’ll just melt and cast and keep it all to my greedy self 😉👍🏻

Ive recently tried to cast copper ,,, but it just bubbles away ,,,when I pour it in the mold it turns into a volcano …. Smh
here's a little constructive criticism: try to change up the background music, try to do some original castings, something not many people have done.
If you're good at talking English, try to add a little bit of commentary while you're doing your castings.

+jyienger yeah mate my long tongs broke so I ordered more from eBay so when they get here I should be able to lower the mold into the furnace and get it nice and hot right b4 I pour into it next time👍🏻

bigstackD why not use a propane torch on a rest over the mold to keep the mold heated . Just build yourself a propane torch stand that angels the fire into the mold. Same thing on bars. Let tge torch run a couple seconds after you pour it. If you want cool pour lines on your bars , furinv this process gently shake the base that mold is on as you pour under the torch heat but back the torch up as you shake slowly.😉
+Anthony Poole definitely something to look at for sure . Yes it works well I see pourers doing that a lot especially silver pourers trying to get a cleaner pour. 😉👍🏻

I was wondering if you could try and use plaster of Paris and plays and to make custom molds, I know a couple other people used it for an insulator for their forge but I haven't truthfully seen anyone try to use it as a mold

+Jeff Geo Man not sure if plaster Paris would work in my furnace but I'll definitely look at trying that when my furnace needs it for sure ide be interested to see how it holds up . As skullking said I will make some plaster Paris molds to try cast in , it's on my list but I have a few things I'm working on first. Plaster Paris mold casting will definitely happen in the future that's for sure .

Couldn't you simply go to LOWES and buy a iron end cap for less then $2 ?? why bother machining a piece of steel that even scrap could be used for something else ?
