    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you add a footnote, by default, the text is added to the bottom of the page (just above the footer section in a Word document). Keep in mind that if you click, insert ENDnote instead of footnote, it'll add it to the last page of your report. I hope this clears it up.

    One thing I'm having an issue with I can't find anywhere is inserting footnotes that align with columns on the page. Otherwise my footnotes go across the page instead of wrapping the text at the margin of where the column starts. Any help or a video would be appreciated!

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bristan,
      All right I think I can probably explain this in the comment. Follow the steps below:
      1. Click the View Tab
      2. In the Show Group, click the check box that says Ruler (You'll have to have your insertion point i.e. the blinking cursor somewhere in the body of your text, not in the footnote area)
      3. Click in your footnote text
      4. You'll see a ruler above your document (vertical ruler) and in the left section, you'll see 2 little markers that look like a home plate in baseball. Hover over the bottom one.
      5. Click and drag the home plate looking icon to the right or left until the Footnote text lines up with the text in the column above.
      6. From there you should be able to press the enter button to wrap any text to the next line.
      Hopefully I was able to explain this to help you out. If not, let me know and I'll make a video on it. Thanks for the comment, and have a nice day.

    Good Evening Professor Morgan. I tried to change the style of the footnotes in my document following your steps in modify style but that only changes the immediate footnote and not even all the footnotes on the page, nor in the whole document. Please advise. Thank you.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good evening Amor,
      I'm not entirely sure why yours wouldn't update each footnote, as mine did in this video. Try clicking the checkbox for 'Automatically Update' in the Modify Style dialog box and see if that effects the changes made once you've adjusted your Footnote Style. I hope this helps you out.

    Thanks I was writing a grade 10 science paper and I wanted to include some citations because I used information other than what was provided by the photocopied notes. I don't want to get in trouble for plagiarism and therefore acknowledge my sources at all times no matter how trivial it may seem. I was looking though in the insert tab instead of the references tab. Whoops!

    Good Day Professor Morgan
    I have been searching for some tutorials on how to use Microsoft Office 16 word program using headers. Seems my Office 16 word program is different than what you show. I have been having quite a bit of difficulty in getting headers set up with different clients. For my job I would insert company / client name, page number and date.
    I have gone to Insert, scrolled over to Header, scrolled down to Edit Header and header box presents at top of page. So far just like yours. From here on I am having problems getting the page number to change. It will not continue the numbering correctly. I have tried going in to manual change but it still does not take.
    Please advise
    Maria

    *Thank you was shortened from the phrase "I thank you". Derived from the old English "thancian" - related to Old Frisian "thankia" Old Norse "thakka" Old Saxon, Old High German "thancōn" leading to the middle German "danken" and the modern English "thank".

    Thank you for making this video. I am still unsure about what is the correct way to reference sources that I am using in my geography coursework. I’m not at university so I don’t have much experience of it. This is for my a-levels (last year of high school in the USA I think). Is it best to put sources in footnotes or to have a bibliography like you showed in your bibliography video?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi RavenclawRowena,
      No problem, I hope you found this video helpful. As for your sources, typically they go in the bibliography. Footnotes are used primarily to explain information from the paper. I have a video on bibliography and source citing, you may want to watch it so that you can see the difference. Thanks for watching!

    I'm using office 365. How do you number the footnotes by chapters in a book, without them running consecutively?
    The same for page numbers; how would you start the page numbers for one chapter and then start them all over for the next chapter? These are my two problems I can't figure out. Thanks!

  • @rockeysingh8841
    @rockeysingh8841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear Adam. Hope you are well. Many thanks for your ever so helpful videos. Taking you up on your kind invitation for help I am kindly asking if you would be able to show me how to do this one. If you check out the references in Wikipedia, you will see the footnotes number and just in front of that number is a 'CARET' (it's usually in lowercase) symbol which is an upturned V. What that caret does, is, if you click on it .it will take you right back to where that footnote is located in the text. So if you input footnotes 1-5 throughout the text and then you go to the caret next to number 4 in the footnotes and click on the caret, what will happen is that it will jump up straight to footnote number 4 ( the caret is actually called "jump up". Thanks for your kind help, Adam

    Many thanks.
    I don't know if you're taking questions, but anyone who knows could answer and I will be grateful:
    1) Can you keep the footnote numbering so it restarts per page or chapter or in the whole paper?
    2) You used the term "MLA format", I am not sure what that is. I hope it is something I can be forgiven for as a British person, but I would like to know anyway.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David,
      Thank you for watching. Let me try to answer your questions:
      1. Yes, you can reset numbering by doing the following -
      Insert the footnote
      If you want the number to restart, add a section break after the footnote in the text
      Go to the References Tab, Footnotes Group, and click the Footnotes Dialog Box launcher in the bottom-right of the group
      Change Numbering to 'Restart Each Section'
      Then if you want, change the 'Start At:' section to change the numbering
      2. MLA is a formatting style that we use in the United States. They're basically general guidelines for writing an essay or research paper. I hope this helps you out.
      Have a nice day.

    I absolutely love your teaching technique, I have been relying more on your tutorial videos than my instructors at the technical college. I just recently took the practice exam for the certification in Word, and I got through it because of all your videos that I have been cramming in! Now all I have to do is work on my timing and I will be ready to test. Are you familiar with the types of directives that are on the exam for Excel certification? I thought I would be taking the MOS exam, but it seems as though we will be testing on each branch individually. I was under the assumption the class prepped you to test for the specialist status, but from what I have been hearing- most classes don't make it past Excel. It is possible to gain certification in each Microsoft area individually right? and once you complete all 5 areas, you are considered a specialist?(whether you test for them all at once or separately)

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Armando,
      Thank you for this comment, I am glad my teaching style works well for you! I'm very happy my tutorials have prepared you for your practice exams. Timing is extremely important during the exam. Microsoft offers certification (MOS) in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, & Outlook. You're considered a "specialist" in whichever program you are certified in. So if you pass Word MOS, you're considered a Word specialist. Microsoft also offers 2 expert exams in Word and Excel. If you pass an Expert MOS exam, you're considered an Expert in that application. If you pass both Expert exams, and the other MOS exams, you are considered a Master, and will earn the MOS Master certification. I hope this clears it up for you. I have a playlist for all of these applications on my channel (except Outlook, I only have 1 video, more to come) so I recommend checking out my playlist page if you're interested in watching those.

    How do you cite the same footnote twice, for example if you have two quotes from the same source in your paragraph. Is there a way to change the small number or is there a different way? Thanks!

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brandinho,
      If you repeat the steps shown in the video, it will automatically add in a new footnote number. Word automatically reorders footnote numbers based on the placement of the footnote within the text. If you have two quotes from the same source, you could repeat the text in the footnote area if that makes sense, or copy and paste the footnote number to the second citation, if you prefer to only have one footnote in the bottom of your page.

    Hi from Greece and thank you for your beautiful videos. You have help me a lot in many essays. I want to help me again if you can by explain me how in foot notes use bibliography. For example I want my footnote1 to be Harvard Style like this:
    CHAMBLISS, W., 2004. On the symbiosis between criminal law and criminal behaviour. In: Criminology. s.l.:42(2).
    Can it take it automatically?? Or I have to write down all the time the book and the author etc !!!!! ????
    I hope you understand me.... Thank you in advance 😀

      Hi Abdul,
      No problem, I'm glad the video was useful. You will need to add a section break in between each chapter for the footnotes to reset. Here is a video on section breaks for Word 2016, I hope it helps:

      @@ProfessorAdamMorgan thanks for your reply and help. I had one more question that is it possible to to cite footnote in each page from number one? otherwise for the whole document it will go to may be 30 or more footnote number and I dont know if it is acceptable for my thesis advisor please share your opinion at the end of your comment.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Abdul,
      I would recommend speaking with your thesis advisor on that one. It is possible to always start a footnote at 1 on each page if you separate each page with a new Section break. Popular writing formats do not typically follow that process, so I'd check with the advisor if I were you. I hope this helps.

    What about if your footnotes are used to cite sources (not additional comments)? It would be great to have a handy-dandy tool like you demonstrate in your "citations and bibliography" video. I'd love to be able to use the citation tool to capture all the source information in the correct format to add the footnote, then easily create the bibliography from the footnotes. Do you have any suggestions or another video for that? Thank you!

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andy,
      Unfortunately Word doesn't have a tool that would work like that. I saw your comment on my Citations & Bibliography video and figured I'd share that comment on this page as well in case anyone has the same problem. If you do the method below, it should be an easy enough way to transfer the bibliographical information into a footnotes section. Let me know if it works for you.
      Well I suppose you could create a source using the information as shown in this video, then create a bibliography at the bottom of the page. Then you could copy and paste that information (text only) into your footnote text so it appears like a citation in the footnote section. I'm not a writing professor so I'm unfamiliar with the type of references your professor is looking for, but I imagine this method would work for what you're trying to do. I hope this is helpful, let me know if you have any other questions. Have a nice day.

    Adam I have two short essays, about 2 - 3 pages each, that I have to present on one document. Essay one has 5 footnotes when I combine the essays foot note 1 in essay two becomes 6 and so on. How do I correct this?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sue,
      Try inserting a section break in between the sections. Then go to the References Tab, and click the Footnotes dialog box and restart the numbering in that window. Here is a video on section breaks, I hope it helps:

    Hi, I have a rather large document 480 pages which includes footnotes. However, when I hide the footnotes the page numbers change and are reduced (to about 200 pgs). Is there a way to hide the footnotes but keep the original length of the document at 480?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi Mor G,
      I think since you're removing the footnotes, it's moving the text up. If that's the case, I don't think you can keep the original page numbering. Word views page numbers as to where they're at in your document. If you remove text and the page number changes, the numbers will also change on the pages. I hope this clears it up.

    Hi I have a question, when I insert my footnotes the number comes out the same size as my regular text, I know how to change the font and size to the actual footnotes but the number won't change. Can you help me with this.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Isabel,
      Great question. First off, sorry for the late reply, it's a busy time of year. All right so let's get started. First off, if you want to change the footnote size so that it always populates with the correct size (probably smaller in your case) here is the best way to do it:
      1. Highlight the footnote number (either in the text, or in the footnote at the bottom)
      2. Right click the highlighted footnote number (remember to only highlight the number itself, not any of the surrounding text)
      3. Choose 'Styles' (Quick Access Toolbar)
      4. Right click the 'Footnote Reference' box in the gallery
      5. Click 'Modify'
      6. In the formatting section, adjust the font size of the footnote
      That's it! So from this point forward, it will automatically use the size you chose in that menu. If you don't do it this way, you'd have to adjust the size on each individual footnote, and that's no good. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and have a good one.

    I still have a problem when I added a footnote at the bottom of the page, I wanted to jump to the following page to keep writing about my research but it is stuck in fotenote style with a line that follows you as you scroll down to the next page.

    HI, I have a problem with inserting new footnote. I already have footnote number 1 and when I want to insert second one it appears as note number 3. How to fix this?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vesna,
      Find out where the hidden footnote is on your document. You can go to the References Tab, and choose the Footnotes dialog box in the bottom-right of the Footnotes group. You can then find the hidden footnote and delete it.
