I have listened to so many renditions, and this is my absolute favorite. Just the right voice quality, tempo and accompaniment. Think about it. This is a gut wrenching plea from a woman who thinks she's not pretty enough, not fair enough, not feminine enough. And who thinks she is nothing w/o a man. A gorgeous voice with perfect diction does not impart the anguish that an Ellie Goulding can. Pure honest emotion with this version.

Just to wade into this debate, this version is far superior to miley cyrus's version, for a start ellie comprehends the emotions involved in the lyrics, miley sings parts in a complex way to hide the complete lack of understanding of the emotion in the song. Miley Cyrus happens to be Dolly's goddaughter. I don't think she disgraced herself by singing it with someone she loves. They sang it well, not as well as Ellie did, but it's flat out rude to say someone "disgraced" a song. Everyone has their own way of covering a song.
Actually, there's some brilliant live versions of hers, without any form of autotune, and whist normally I'd pick Ellie Goulding over Miley Cyrus, Miley's cover is actually really good, and is in my opinion better than Ellie's version.
A lot of people hate Miley. That I know, but you can't say that Miley's version is emotionless. That's lying to yourself. Heck, even people who says that they don't like Miley admits that she did good on Jolene. Ellie's version is amazing as well.

I think Mindy Smith does the best cover of Jolene. I agree with you that Miley did a good job though and I think Dolly was very proud of her since Dolly is Miley's godmother. I think I love everything Ellie is doing :)
the white stripes version will always be my personal favorite, nobody can scream and beg like jack white can. it saddens me that some of these commenters don't see the beauty of his rendition. but this is quite good as well.

Not necessarily true. It's a cover. One artist sings a song written by another artist. They interpret it any way they want. That's the point of the art of music and the expression that comes from it.
I've heard it, and while it's good, I have to say this one has a very different musicality to it. Hard to judge both side by side. If I had to pick this one has more soul to it for some reason.
I dont like her version at all! Dolly Parton is a legend and her music was and still is amazing! Its rare if someone can cover her songs and make it sound good.. Ellie can not sing this song at all.
i think jack white's version is more to my liking b/c it sounds more painful. i dunno, i find that kind of raw pain and the imperfect vocals that express it a bit better for a song like this.
no it shouldnt stay country . their hasnt been a song that I've heard that ellie screwed up . and jack white is phenomenal artist i havent listened to his version but i bet its great .
Just listened to this and Laura Marling's version. Only serves to highlight the power of Parton. Both of their voices sound little and weak when they try to step into Aunty Dolly's shoes.
This cover has the pathos and heartbreak the song requires. I've heard a lot of perfect deliveries today but none other with the feeling necessary for a such a sad song as this.
Are people really complaining because her voice isn't perfect? I would kill to sound like this. You know anyone can sing perfectly, its called voice manipulation, ex: autotunes.
Having heard 'Every Time You Go' and automatically noticing the similarity of her voice in parts of that particular song with that of Dolly's, I kind of expected more from this cover. :|

Fuuuuuuuuck! How amazing is this? I still think it sounds better in Dolly Parton's voice but this is still AMAZING!!!! Ellie you make me want to become a singer!
I'd say let him go. If he really loved you he'd stay. But this is a beautiful song that gets across how difficult it is to stay logical when your insecure or when your hearts breaking.
