Speaking of explosive safety devices, you should check out an AAD (automatic activation device) used in skydiving. A small computer tracks your altitude against your freefall speed and if you are traveling a certain speed beneath a certain altitude a small explosive device fires a cutter that cuts a line that releases your reserve parachute.
It completely went unnoticed but at 5:54 you can see the LED blink a few times as the electricity finds pathways through the debris before everything becomes too separated and the LED goes out for good. Fascinating!

Have you guys ever thought about filming a welding arc? It's essentially an arc of electricity that has bits of metal traveling along with it. I've only ever seen illustrations and animations of it, but I don't believe anyone has ever managed to capture a welding arc that shows the blobs of metal in them or exactly what it's doing to the base metal in slow motion. Would be really educational, especially for those who are already working in the field.
The "blobs" of metal you speak of are actually ions I believe. You wouldn't be able to see them moving - it would just look like a bright light. That said the deposition on the target material would be very interesting.
Edit: So I was completely wrong. matthew phillips farther down this thread actually posted a video of exactly that, highly recommend it! I imagine it would be either extremely difficult or not possible for them to film that. The light from a welding arc is absolutely too bright and would overwhelm the camera sensor
One thing that might be cool is DLP projectors that use colour wheels to create a full colour image from just a single colour laser, by passing the laser through a series of spinning wheel that filter or convert the light. They also often display onto something called a DMD, which is a tiny chip full of extremely tiny mirrors for every pixel that physically flip dozens of times for every frame, but that is probably extremely hard to film.
Would be very cool to see in motion, but the feature size on the DMD is so small that you won't see any detail with a regular high speed camera. Last time I looked at a MEMS device that had a similar feature size to a DMD, I needed a scanning electron microscope to see anything in detail. Luckily, I had access to one. However, to my knowledge, there is no such thing as an SEM that can produce more than 2 frames per second, and the resolution is very poor at those speeds. Typically, an SEM takes 5 or so seconds to produce a single frame. A macro lens simply would not do the job, I don't think any visible light imaging device could do it, save for maybe some multi million dollar microscope in a lab somewhere.
You can't filter other colors out of a single color laser, and I'm not aware of any way of changing the wavelength of light without a bunch of arcane optics.
@@tyttuut The OP is incorrect in that DLP projectors use a bulb, not a laser, and only one spinning wheel. I've taken plenty of them apart in the past, to clean the optical path (particularly the colour wheel).

it's often very very difficult to get a decent look because of just HOW bright it is, because it can ruin something as sensitive as the Phantoms. It really would be a balance of quality of shot and quality of content.
There is plenty of slow motion footage of welding already. But you can't really see all that much. The real trick would be to figure out how to shoot a cross sectional view to actually see what is happening in the welding area and not just at the surface.
Gav's little editing touches are brilliant, no question that Dan's "10 minute mark" comment landing right on 10 mins (with the ding!) was intentional! HAHAHAHAH

I have always been curious about what welding looks like in super slow mo. Either stick or MIG for lots of pretty sparks. I suggest a thick canvas draped over the phantom, molten steel and expensive cameras probably don't mix.
@@verakoo6187 Use a filter made of welding mask material, maybe; those can keep eyes safe and human eyes need LESS illumination than a phantom going at max speed. In addition, it's possible to configure a phantom to be surprisingly insensitive.

Flash Bulb, the analog photography ones. They are magnesium wire filled bulbs, originally set off with a small explosive device contained within, the later versions used a 22v battery. it would be interesting to see if the magnesium wire set off all at once or followed the path of the wire and branched out! MrCAD in london has a a vast array of different types.

Great video, as always! The apparent flame, moving towards the extinguisher, is really the flame being drawn in behind the outwards exploding tube contents. As it fires outwards, the air and flame 8s drawn in from behind. It suggests that the fuse holder shields and directs the explosion forwards, towards the camera. Brilliant imagery!

The explosive (typically Armstrong's mixture) is a highly sensitive friction-actuated explosive that detonates from the friction produced when you pull the string on the popper
I mean, if you're going to take that literally you need hands the size of Shaq to grasp just one in your hand, so I don't think "a handful of a fire extinguishers" will ever catch on as a unit of measurement
Not in terms of a safety device, but I'd love to see ya'll collaborate with one of the fine blacksmiths or makers to film metal working or lathework in high speed. Might be a little difficult to do safely for everyone involved though.
If you have not already investigated it you should look into explosion suppression systems. They are used to prevent or manage explosion of dust-air explosion that occur in material processing facilities. Grain elevators are pretty common candidates for these.
I remember several years ago, y’all done a slow mo video of a backdraft and it shows just how explosive and dangerous they are, but is not the only explosive threat firefighters face. That would be a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) and it would be interesting on how it occurs in slow motion (in a much smaller scale of course).
There's a lot of things that would be interesting to see in slomo from a fighter aircraft ejection sequence/ejection seat. Those seats are crazy Rube Goldberg contraptions. Amazing.
Hey guys. Been following you for a while and really love the things you come up with. My suggestion will be something that you probably can’t acquire because of the cost, but it would be interesting to see the sequence of an ejection seat out of a jet airplane.

There's another type of extinguisher that is like this. They're literally called Extinguisher Bombs. Some are like 5"-6" balls that will explode in the heat like this. They can be placed somewhere you want to have a fire extinguishing device ready, or thrown into the heart of a fire to help extinguish a localized flame. Maybe some of those? There's some on Amazon for like $30 I'm super curious what they look like in slow mo.
I would love to see some seriously slow motion footage using ballistic dummy labs torsos demonstrating various scenarios, gunshots, fireworks accidents, dry ice bombs etc...
I was terrified seeing how easily the electrical tape got ignited... But then I remembered that you have ethanol there too 😅 I think the "fuse" functionality is for information that it pops, and not really used as fuse, that would carry any significant load, but I could be wrong.
The promotional material says that "The fire is detected at the origin and the fire is automatically extinguished. The power is permanently cut off to prevent re-ignition[...]" The tubes seem to have specific current limits (up to 16A), but nowhere does it say what happens if you exceed it or if you can use it as a regular fuse. Personally, I'm not sure if i want my over-current protection to release noxious gas when triggered, so having it in series with a regular fuse as a thermal fuse is probably the idea here.
I love the ding sound at exactly 10 min, which is also in the list at the end at 10:00 :D The LED is blinking after the fuse popped in the open air test without the windwall which means the to contacts would form a new circuit from the flying parts
I feel like a great video would be snapping a rubber band onto someone's skin. You could see the ripples and reactions so clearly in slow mo. It sounds really fascinating. This is definitely not an attempt to get Dan snapped with a rubber band multiple times.

I've always thought that up-close slow mo of metal being welded and the puddle of molten metal flowing around would be interesting.

Sadly it isnt possible to record welding arcs, its just too bright they would need a phantom that could do light speed lol

There's a lot of things that would be interesting to see in slomo from a fighter aircraft ejection sequence/ejection seat. Those seats are crazy Rube Goldberg contraptions. Amazing.
Hey guys. Been following you for a while and really love the things you come up with. My suggestion will be something that you probably can’t acquire because of the cost, but it would be interesting to see the sequence of an ejection seat out of a jet airplane.
I agree that would be awesome! Only one slight problem is that planes are a tad expensive. Perhaps a collab with somebody who can make a scale model?

There's another type of extinguisher that is like this. They're literally called Extinguisher Bombs. Some are like 5"-6" balls that will explode in the heat like this. They can be placed somewhere you want to have a fire extinguishing device ready, or thrown into the heart of a fire to help extinguish a localized flame. Maybe some of those? There's some on Amazon for like $30 I'm super curious what they look like in slow mo.

I think the "fuse" functionality is for information that it pops, and not really used as fuse, that would carry any significant load, but I could be wrong.
The promotional material says that
"The fire is detected at the origin and the fire is automatically extinguished. The power is permanently cut off to prevent re-ignition[...]" The tubes seem to have specific current limits (up to 16A), but nowhere does it say what happens if you exceed it or if you can use it as a regular fuse. Personally, I'm not sure if i want my over-current protection to release noxious gas when triggered, so having it in series with a regular fuse as a thermal fuse is probably the idea here.

I feel like a great video would be snapping a rubber band onto someone's skin. You could see the ripples and reactions so clearly in slow mo. It sounds really fascinating. This is definitely not an attempt to get Dan snapped with a rubber band multiple times.
