      Exactly why green deserves more good spells. Red/Blue and Red/Black are too powerful. But as soon as you bring that up, defensive players try finding excuses by blaming green cards.

      I used to have a Temur Flood deck. 4 Howling Mines, 4 Rites of Flourishing, every creature had cascade, and every spell either bounced spells or copied them. I should rebuild it.

      When green gets earlygame efficient creatures, it annoys me because green should have good lategame stuff and ramp, and white should have the efficient stuff, but we have Tireless Tracker, Lambholdt Pacifist, Avatar of the Resolute. and other garbage that is too good for their mana costs. Green's only weakness right now is lack of removal, but people just splash for that, and so they have better creatures than everyone else at all stages of the game and removal.

      This guy is definitely better than silverheart, imo. If he dies and you used the counters on other creatures, you don't lose the counters, whereas with silverheart you'd lose his buff on the paired creature. And this guy can be an 8/8 trample on his own while silverheart needed another body to get big. Plus the trample on his body which silverheart doesn't have. Aside from that and the artifact typing they are very similar cards however and since silverheart saw play I think this guy will certainly see play (especially since I feel he's a bit stronger). I don't think he's broken, of course

    Ghave Guru of Spores edh.
    Here's the board setup needed:
    Abzan Battlepriest + Falconer, Ainok Bond-Kin, Tuskguard Captain, Mer-Ek Nightblade
    Hardened Scales + Corpsejack Menace + Doubling Season
    Ivorytusk Fortress
    This entire situation is of course theoretic and may not even happen but keep in mind the off chance this could. This also works on the build of my Ghave deck.
    1: You drop Gearhulk with the aforementioned board state.
    2: Drop 1 counter on any 4 of the first 5 creatures noted
    3: Hardened Scale is first trigger = 2 counters
    4: Corpsejack Menace 2nd trigger = 4 counters on each
    5: Doubling Season 3rd trigger = 8 counters per creature
    You now have 5 creatures, given you've done outlast triggers prior to this move, that all have Flying, First Strike, Lifelink, Trample and Deathtouch and they all untap during each player's untap step.
    OR
    1: Gearhulk
    2: Drop all his counters on himself
    3: Trigger in the same order: Scales (5 counters), Menace (Now 10 counters), then Season (now 20 counters)
    You now have a 24/24 artifact creature construct with Flying, First Strike, Lifelink, Trample and Deathtouch and it untaps during each player's untap step.
    Well shit that's 2 different ways to mess someone up.

      Uh, mind explaining how the new Chandra is broken? Cause I don't think she is broken by any means. Like for sure she is good but not broken.

    • @TheWinterPhoenix
      @TheWinterPhoenix 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Luu she gives you card advantage, ramps you, protects herself, and has a win con in her ult.

    • @clonezryan12345
      @clonezryan12345 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are good points, but the reason why I feel that this variation isn't broken is that it doesn't impact the game state immediately outside of removing a creature. Like if an opponent used it then minused to remove a creature, I wouldn't have the rush to quickly remove it or even using her plus ability. I don't know if that is a correct assessment to go by but when I think of broken planes walker I think of planeswalker like Jace the mind sculptor, Elsepeth,Sun's champion and others that I can't really recall. But honestly, its all based on speculation and I'm sure that standard will be impacted by this card.

    • @TheWinterPhoenix
      @TheWinterPhoenix 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ryan Luu That's a good point as well. Jace doesn't impact the board either. He gives very similar things to the new Chandra. Chandra may not brainstorm you for free but her plus can give you the card advantage you need, deal damage to the player or ramp you. What makes her OP is her versatility. Need to get psudeo card advantage? she's got it, need 2 extra mana? She's got you covered. Need 2 extra damage to the player? she can do that. Need to kill a creature? she can do that too for the most part.

  • @pokemonnnerd

    You can always just drop an instant on him before his counters resolve, Grasp and things like Lightning Axe still kill it. I'm sure R&D is sane enough to fit some instant speed artifact removal in Kaladesh seeing as some of the best forms of it is rotating out.
    I really don't understand why people get all uppity over huge Green creatures. That's always been what Green is about, using huge creatures and ramping up to use said creatures. Are we going to ignore the 3 tap White flying 2/3 with vigilance and lifelink, or Cataclysmic Gearhulk which is Tragic Arrogance on a 4/5 stick? And let's not forget Chandra's new card, holy shit that is worth talking about.
    Kaladesh is on a huge power spike right now, it's not just an 8/8(if his ability resolves on himself) for 5 and trample that's worth looking at.

    Personally I'm excited to see the other gearhulks. It looks like its gonna be a cycle. I will say the best deck for this to see play in would be cryptolith rights, pump out this thing early, you have other dorks to pump up if need be, and smash face. Seems fun.

    I disagree, 5 mana is not hard to get out, in any color. 6 mana stuff is where you start getting into the "good" stuff.
    But it is a 5 mana 8/8 trample.

  • @Ianoxen
    @Ianoxen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Its strong now since the meta is creature-heavy AND considering the strong creatures now are green like Lambholt Pacifist and Tireless Tracker and Ishkanah, i think this can find a slot.

  • @squirelleyeo9722
    @squirelleyeo9722 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you think this card is broken you need to reconsider what you find broken. A 5 8/8 with trample... spot removal kills it, bouncing it slows it down, counter it. There are ways to play around it.
    Also for other creatures with +1/+1 counters die to spot removal or boardwipes.

      Explosive Vegetation and Nissa's Pilgrimage leave. There are like 2 other ramp spells, but they are terrible. Natural Connection is an instant 2G that puts a land on the board. It is in BFZ. Ruin in Their Wake is possibly a land ramp spell as well.

    I'm calling it, Bant Blink. Using white, blue, and green cards with powerful enter the battlefield effects as well as cards that blink them like eldrazi displacer. Maybe it could be two colors. But I think white and both have blink effects and maybe both are required to have enough to be reliable. And green has some good etb effects that are hard to turn down.

  • @scrocdiddlydog5326
    @scrocdiddlydog5326 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd say this card is pretty good, but not broken by any means. It's held back by the mere fact that it's green, whose removal usually requires you to have bigger creatures to be used. It can still be targeted and is especially vulnerable considering it's an artifact as well, though in the Kaladesh block or a delirium deck that could actually be a good thing. It's also a one-shot effect with the counters, so it requires a little set-up to be backbreaking for the opponent in most instances. I also play decks that tend to maindeck mass removal too, so I'm not really concerned about it. It's a fair card.

  • @Simon-ow6td
    @Simon-ow6td 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gearkulk looks really good and will probably be a staple in at least one tier 1 deck and sneak into a few other G/X decks. You will see it a lot and will need a plan for it, but I don't think it will "break" standard by any means. There will always be some really strong and meta-defining cards in standard and this time Gearhulk probably will be one of them. To be honest, I'm just happy to loose collected company, but I still like green so I'm not complaining just yet. If disaster strikes you can always reprint smelt or something.

  • @passedjudgements4729
    @passedjudgements4729 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    In defense to this card, unless there's new ramp in Kaladesh the only ramp spells available are traverse the ulvenwald, fork in the road, and Nissa's renewal. Renewal is 5 or 6 and won't happen until late game. Traverse and fork grab lands and put them in your hand. Once rotation hits ramp will slow way down cause they can't use a vegetation to slap 2 more lands onto the board. You could argue about rites and other mana dorking cards but as for land ramp green is losing power come rotation

    This'll pair great with Armorcraft Judge. Drop +1/+1 counters onto four separate creatures. Then start dropping judges. Draw a card for each creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it? Card draws for days!

  • @dallasjthompson
    @dallasjthompson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    in standard the only artifact removal spell that people would run mainboard is anguished unmaking, which targets non-land permanent, and nobody would put artifact removal for one card that isn't a combo winner so the "it's an artifact" argument is nulled.
    because of it's ability to distribute counters, it's scary. an 8/8 trample for 5 is damn good, but you can potentially put four other creatures out of burn range, which makes it awesome

    • @justinwhite2725
      @justinwhite2725 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I expect most decks will be running either this and/or panharmonicon. I expect artifact hate will be main deck (2 in main 2 in side)
      World breaker and that emerge eldrazi that destroys artifacts are more likely to be maindecked.

  • @Nurriek
    @Nurriek 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think he's too powerful, though I think he might do some work in like a Bant Ramp, or a Temur Ramp shell. I'm thinking specifically about Vessel of Volatility being able to push this duder out something hard, specifically if you run something like Burning Tree Emissary to provide you with the additional green source you'd need on turn 3. Obviously, that's a push, but to me, this guy screams Aggro-Ramp. Temur or Gruul, and even Bant, in kind of a Ramp-control deck.

    Vendurous Gearhulk, in my opinion, is easily countered by red, black and white removal of artifacts and/or creatures. I think it's designed to promote green ramp but honestly there aren't that many good options other than eldrazi for ramp right now.

    an over looked aspect of cards are enter the battlefield not when cast, so they can be brought in from other locations to drop counters, Black/green decks can do some damage with those. by pulling em from the grave yard or just flashing them to load counters on other creatures attach a sword of selves to it in a multiplayer game like commander and watch people squirm.

    This is just proof that wizards shows favoritism when it comes to strategy. How can green get a 5 mana 8/8 trampler. yet the best Counterspell in standard is spell shrivel.......and there is no good card draw spell. the majority of people may not like control but a large amount of people do and in order to be competitive in standard you either need to be jamming big Creatures like emrakul and this thing or filling your graveyard for delirium.

    7 mana in a Green deck is easy. By turn 3-4 you can play that Gaia's Revenge. Thus 5 mana for a possible 8/8 with trample OR a 4/4 trampling pumper of weenies makes it a great example of typical "Rare Green Creature" taht could be played by the 3rd turn. And yet it is pretty balanced with what other colors can do to counter it (white defensive pacifism, red explosive damage, blue inteligent control, black overwhelming destructiveness). So yeah nice rare green creature, balanced and playable in current times (and yet 15 years ago would be so OP. HAHHA).

    I think that Verdurous Gearhulkmis better because the effect can be reused, if you can get this into your hand several times, and summon it, you can easily buff your creatures... He's not too big, but people can have a hard time dealing with him if they don't exile him... 1 or 2 points better in my book... Plus he is cheaper so... If you have enough land, this is a legitimate threat...Though his main weakness is exilement...

    I find the gearhulk as a fair card, not busted or anythin, is weak to artifact and creature removal, and maybe kaladesh is going to have good artifact removal. Imo it doen't need an specific ramp strategy, is a good value creature that could go in a midrange deck, something like jund delirium or gb delirum since being an artifact helps the deck, it even looks good in the new bant decks that may exist after rotation, growing up your team without the need of being a a human.

    Reminded me of Spectral Force that saw T2 play in Scryb&Force. He is even better!!
    Will Kaladesh bring more artifact hate or not? He is an artifact , it may be good and bad.

    21 lands? Of course you're not getting to 5 CMC. A deck running cards like this should be running like 25 lands. 24 if he's the very top of your curve.

    • @extrememark13
      @extrememark13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen decks with more expensive creatures run 22 lands. Example? Reid Duke's EM pro tour deck.

    • @Mathhead2000
      @Mathhead2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, along with 2 mana dorks, 2 mana rocks, and 17 cards that could get lands for him if he was mana screwed.

    haven't people realised yet? Panharmonicon with this card = 8 counters and curves out nicely ... just saying play bant ramp with reflector mage, sylvan advocate and other bull its possible going to be nuts. oh wait also Cataclysmic Gearhulk to clear the field just because

    you could make a sick combo with purposely killing it and returning it to the battlefield and putting the counters on other creatures

      by the time you cast gearhulk you dont want to cast the avatar any more, at this point if all your creature with +1/+1 counters is still alive you are winning anyway.

  • @Zestybruh
    @Zestybruh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    i see modern brew lmao, with hardened scales and corpsejack menace he'd be giving 4 creatures 4 counters for the same cmc as Ajani Mentor of Heroes who'd only give 4 to 3 creatures and isn't a creature himself.

    Verdourous Gearhulk Is pretty crazy. However its a mythic, its going to be hard as all hell to get, so .-. a net deck nightmare most likely.

  • @Goggledguy
    @Goggledguy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Waaaaait... Who else remembers either Servant of the Scale or the Salt Road Quartermasters? I know that they are to be shifted out soon (or already have), but they will be a pain in the butt in Modern. And while yes, that is NOT what Desolator mainly covers, it still is a game style, one which I enjoy. Sooooo.... Will that be a viable combo?

  • @collinschey

  • @EriqireM

    a 3gg deal with this or die is not unreasonable, especially at mythic. its a big ol stick of a card for the noobs to swing around.

    If an opponent trows a big creature at you late in the game, block with either a big creature or two medium sized creatures of your own and trade your creatures for theres, give or take combat tricks etc… Combat doesn't make you loose right away :-P It's just combat. Avatar looks a bit good for only two mana. :-o

    I agree with des but there is lots of synergy in kaladesh. black gets creatures+artifacts out of the graveyard. like the card fortuitous find if hulk is removed. also their are copy spells such as saheeli rai and saheeli's artistry. and saheeli rai creates the token then gives it haste. artistry copies twice. phyrexian metamorph for modern. also panharmonicon doubles the trigger. just thoughts. u/g seems kinda supported with rashmi and the enemy color lands so that a thing.

      there is white and green spells that give hexproof or protection of color in standard... so in a long game an 8/8 with a protection spell at instant speed is a threat..

  • @rob0rat
    @rob0rat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gaea OP? Maybe. But currently, green doesn't have any huge creatures that have staying power. You need either blossoming defense or pay 4 mana for the hydra that can hexproof only with energy. Gaea/World Breaker were my champs but currently big green dudes are just too ez to remove. Plated Crusher can be countered, making world breaker the only good high mana green creature.

  • @LieutenantMerks
    @LieutenantMerks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the gearhulk + eldrazi displacer you can keep pumping out +1/+1 on creatures. Also if you combo them with the new cultivator of blades.....and you keep pumping him and all your creatures will be just insane. Maybe a Decimator of provinces for the trample and why the hell not the extra +2/+2 lol
