- Today's tutorial showcases the latest and easiest way of playing PS1 games from USB using Popstarter emulator and OPL using a modded fat or slim PS2 running FMCB or similar. This is a newer process and replaces any older USB method video recorded in the past.

Thanks for this tutorial. I thought playing PS1 games was just as easy as putting PS1 ISO to the drive and worked like PS2 did. I managed to play Nascar Rumble and it works great.

This video is very helpful. I was able to play Asuka 120%, Mad Stalker, Panzar Bandit, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters and many more games through USB on OPL. I'm glad to finally play them on the big screen. I just wish whoever is responsible for the Popstarter emulator could update the program so I can play Tekken 1 without the sound glitches, and Tekken 3 without the visual glitches, and etc.
Thanks very much for this! Didn't realize how simple it was. Have been playing PS1 games off my PS2 HDD for the past few months but whenever I used WinHIIP to fix something with a PS2 game, it seemed to wipe my PS1 games off the HDD or mess up the POPS folder they were in. I finally thought I would just try them on USB so I can avoid this and it works perfectly. For some reason, the PS1 games load up faster too compared to when I played them off HDD and I would have a blank screen for 40-50 seconds.

I had some compatibility issues with my Tomb Raider games using Popstarter, so I wound up using Mac emulation to play them instead. Great tutorial though, very straight forward.

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia BTW, the game glitches a lot while playing. The tracks appear hollow, you can see through them. The racing itself is also slow.

Just for noobs (like me,) I tried to use the CUE2POPS you recommend, but I found it quite difficult to use in respect of things like multiple bin files and if the files are not in bin cue (I had some img files which CUE2POPS does not understand.) The one I recommend for ease of use is PSXVCD found here. www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2895 . This handles multiple bin files with ease and other file formats as well. Create a single bin file out of multiple bin tracks using CDmage, drop the cue file on the program > save as and that's it.

@@turrinha9 if you did it like I said, it should have worked. Perhaps you happen to have a different version of OPL. I use the 10th anniversary edition, but I think there are more actualised ones.
As I said, download the roms, extract, usually comes with a bin and a cue file, (extra step: if there are more than two bin tracks, merge them in cdmage through the cue file), drop the cue file into CUE2POPS to make the VCD file and lastly batch said archive in OPL manager. Doing that, plus everything else the video said, should do the job. Tell me exactly what's the problem if it still doesn't work, or what you have done so far.

It works but the game's compatibility varies. It is best to check its remarks on any PS1 game you want to start so that you can find out their problems until the next update.

One question how do i save my PS1 games files? Thru my old memory card? If by USB, can i migrate my save file from my old PS1 memory card?
To anybody having the issue where when you start a game it boots to the launcher make sure you have a good pops_iox file. Mine kept doing that until I downloaded a new one and now it works. Check that it is the same size as his in the video. The first one I downloaded was 921kb and the games wouldn't start but the other one was 917kb like in the video and it works now.
Thanks for the insight. I didn't realize I had the "good" one so that is the one I used all the time. Didn't realize there are different versions out there with different file size and that can be an issue.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia yeah the file is kind of hard to find honestly so I just downloaded the first one I could find. And I always got the launcher then I noticed today our file sizes were different so I looked for a different one and got it. Saw a few others were having this issue.
@@hxclambfan I installed the latest version of OPL v1.1.0 but mine does not show PS1 games on display option. My pops_iox.pak file is 917kb. Any suggestions?
@@theoriginaljrest make sure the file path is correct. I accidentally had all the files inside of a second pops folder when I originally tried it causing issues. Other than that's all I could think to try.

Here's some tips for component cable users, mostly YPbPr or Yipper cables and even PS2 HDMI adapter (the black ones) - use GSM to force PS2 to display PS1 games by setting it to NTSC/PAL depending on your game. There's also an option for PS1 HDTV settings but you're might want to stick to default NTSC/PAL mode if the PS1 HDTV settings displays incorrectly.
However, there's some caveat - missing colors but minimal and also 240p display tends to be in widescreen so you might need to use TV display settings to adjust the super-widescreen display.
It is best to use RGB component cables like SCART cables to enjoy PS1 titles or using good PS1/PS2 HDMI adapters like Pound and Hyperkin as well.

Yep my hdmi to ps2 doesn’t have any settings settings and my tv doesn’t even have a place for composite or component.
I’m a little late to the party but if you could help me I’d appreciate it a lot. I use a ps2 to hdmi converter so once I load a ps1 game it just goes black screen, I got the gmc thing and I’m wondering what settings do I put it to I tried the sdtv mode to NTSC but once I load opl the screen gets all glitchy before I can even boot up my ps1 game

This is amazing! I bought Free McBoot a few weeks back and damn u can play PS1 too? Never knew that. I play PS1 on my classic mini atm so dunno how much I'd use it but hey pretty cool. Wonder if u can chuck PS2 and PS1 games on your IDE HD so u have the choice of both. That would b damn sweet, having them together. Kinda like my CFW PS3 does.

The OPL manager renames your VCD files to the "SERIAL.Game.VCD" structure so that OPL can load them. Unless you look up each serial id of each game and rename them yourself, the "batch convert VCD naming" part of OPL manager is mandatory.
You kinda mention the file structure in the description, but I was completely skipping this step at first because you mentioned OPL manager was optional (the art part is).
Still appreciate this video, just something that threw me off at first.

Works in 2024 I was having trouble with OPL not displaying the games in my POPS folder until I named them exactly how this comment said. Serial.game.VCD, the same serial number has the art OPL manager downloads. I’m using OPL 1.10 10th anniversary

My only issue is that the games are really laggy and slow. I've been trying to play a game called Final Doom which isn't really that graphic intensive but it's really struggling to keep up. Inputs and framerates are just very laggy. Any Advice? Other than that, this was a really good instructive guide, I've liked and subbed.
I mean, popstarter isn't perfect, it is USB after all. Try SMB or internal hard drive....or emulate the game on PC or android, lol. Or get old ps1 and use tonyhax or freepsxboot and play it like the golden days, on a CRT TV! :)

I don't think it would be any different. I'm a NTSC user primarily so I don't think OPL has settings related to NTSC or PAL from what I remember.

With newer versions of OPL, popstarter can make its own virtual VMC, so a PS1 memory card isn't required.

It is 2000 era, it isn't about ps3 consoles and after that wifi made more sense (thank god)
My MC0 does not have a boot folder... when I tried to create one and paste the OPNPS2LD, when I try to open it, will just show a blank screen and lock up

How do you play multi-part games in opl?
Played RE2 on both discs no problem but...
scenario B on both characters does not allow me to continue.

Hmmm.. all the solutions I see are quite old. They involve writing a DISC.TXT e.g www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1593&p=8413&hilit=Multi+disk#p8413 any help on that would be cool.
For some reasons the games that suppose to work (even the one you shown) the ingame visual is super glitched out and mostly grey or black lines, but the audio of the game runs like normal. Is it because of a faulty file conversion? Or does the emulator doesn't support component? (Despite the ps1 logo is the only thing work, before the visual glitchness).
Not sure I use NTSC games and they work fine with my component cables. Not sure if some TV's are goofy and you may need to use RCA
Would it be possible to use a light gun on this like for area 51? assuming area 51 is on the compatibility list...

I can't comment on this, is the game correct region as your console, i.e. PAL for PAL console or NTSC for NTSC console?

've been trying this for the entire day, and it literally does nothing. I tried it on a USB drive, and I tried it on an SMB pi. The game simply does not show in the apps folder through SMB, and it doesn't show anything on the USB drive I made for it. I literally just want to have one PSX game on it, Street Fighter EX2 Plus. It's in VCD format, followed everything to a T.

Sorry, does cue2pops works for multiples "bin" files? I mean. I have some games that his "zip" file contains more than one "bin" file called "track 1", "track 2", etc. which are for example: Castlevania, Residen Evil 2, Dino Crisis 2, between others.

The pops_iox.pak file is impossible to find. Most of the sites that hosted it have it removed, reported or you need to risk some obscure sites that hid the link behind 18 ad-waiting sites just to redirect you to a hosting site where the link is either expired or you can't download for one reason or another.
I tried playing FF7 on PS2 using the popstarter emulator. However, during battle, only the UI is shown in the screen and the rest is black(cloud barret and the enemies). You think you could help me out?
Bear with me here, I'm a little slow:P So if I understand this correctly as I've already have a setup for running PS2 games from a USB trough SMB (with OPL) for faster speed and performance thanks to your other videos. All I have to do to additionaly play PS1 titles is to take my already exisiting USB device for PS2 ISO's an create a new map called POPS and add a ps1 game as long as its a VCD file, and put the POPS_IOX.PAK and POPSTARTER.ELF files in the same folder. Right?

Hey great video, I’ve been using this as a reference point when working with this so I can get my PS1 games working on here. I did have a few issues at first but after I made sure I was on the same versions of OPL and Popstarter. It worked like a charm. But it only worked that first time? Now when I try to load it up like I did previously. Using this method. And using GSM to adjust the resolution (it was needed to get it working before.) it just goes to a black screen and that’s it. I was wondering if you had any insight?
I'm not sure about this, is GSM a factor here in why it breaks? I would think if it runs fine the first time, any subsequent game playing session should be fine though, shouldn't need to reinstall game or anything like that. Good question to ask at ps2-home.com
Project Phoenix Media so I ended up getting it working. GSM was one of the steps I had to take to get it working before. As I have my PS2 hooked up to a PS2 to hdmi convertor. So I had to force a 480p resolution so it would work. I think the issue this time was more in between tech? I ended up redesigning my entertainment center and moving things around. The only addition was an hdmi splitter that would switch between inputs. I ended up using GSMs settings for a standard television instead of an HD one. And it worked after that. I imagine it’s the additional stuff as I had it working before by simply doing 480p on the hdtv settings. Probably will end up swapping to your internal hdd method for faster load times and better and smoother gameplay. Cuz usb is really not the best way. Either way thanks. Your videos have really helped me get the hang of working with my PS2 and FMCB. And I love how you update your tutorials whenever they’re updated. Idk if you’ve done something like this or not. But you could try deleting the outdated tutorials. Or in brackets at the beginning add that it’s outdated. The only reason I suggest it is because when I was looking for tutorials on this I had 5 videos from you come up on the exact same topic. But on mobile I couldn’t see that they had years at first. So I was like wtfs the difference? Let’s just click the newest one. But I think changing the old video names or deleting videos after you’ve found a newer and better method for the same thing would make things easier to keep track of. Food for thought. Could just unlist em too
I get a lot of comments (and views) for old videos as well as new. I'll have to scrub the ps2 playlist one of these days and for those that are old mark them old. Good idea.
So, can you do specific game tutorials with this method? I'm trying to get Harmful Park but when I convert the cue file to vcd, it says it's not compatible. According to the popstarter compatibility website, it says the game works via usb.

Hello, I got a freemcboot memory card but wanted to run PS1 games. It has OPL already installed on it and detects my files game and art, but when I press run game I get a "no disc" error and sent to a file browser. If anyones got a fix, I appreciate it.

I know this is an older video but how do I go about making OPL see my PS1 "vcds" seen on an internal hard drive? I would think it would just require some sort of config edit to make it see the iso/vcd locations.
You may have seen it already, there is internal hard drive video for fat ps2.

Thanks for the video. Here's an interesting one, I followed all steps and got Point Blank to load. The light gun buttons work (G-Con 1) but there is no control over crosshair. Any ideas, I'd love to get PB1/2/3 to work over usb with the gun?

You need CRT monitor when using gun controllers not lcd or led.

There is a compatible list for all the ps1 games. I wanted to try ff8 but when i did it froze so ive went to google for a compaibility list its not working the first disc anyway. But ff9 works so yeah i wanted to play ff9 on my tv for quite awhile. Thx.
Greetings to everyone. I recently was gifted an unmoded fat ps2. I was looking to play ps2 or possibly ps1 rom downloads from the net, on my ps2. Would i be able to do so, with just a ps2 memory card with freemcboot, along with necessary files on a usb/flashstick? Or is there more items, or things i need to do so?

i have modded ps2 with hdd matrix 1.93, i tried ur method and copied elf files and clicked O on OPNPS2LD.ELF after entire process but opl didi load. Got black screen.. Any suggestions????

Basically if it is a fat ps2, you could technically save the ps1 game images to the hard drive, then use this popstarter method to play games from internal hard drive. It can be done...
Do I need the latest OPL daily build or will OPL 0.9.3 do as well?
The latest OPL daily builds allow you to use popstarter within OPL. 0.9.3 I do not think it does, so its a different process as you need to load the VCD files manually through ulaunchelf.
