    I see headphones as kind of like choosing what kind of drink to have with your meal.
    The M40x's are like water. They're neutral, clear, and won't colour your experience, for the better or worse. Water won't ruin your palate while eating your delicious meal, and the M40X's won't ruin the sound of the song you're listening to.
    But sometimes, you want something with a bit more flavour. The M50x are like a soda pop. It's more exciting, colourful, and can go great with some things. The M50x's can enhance the sound of some genres of music, like how soda pop goes great with some foods, like a hamburger and fries. However, you typically wouldn't want soda pop when you're at a fine dining restaurant, like how the m50x's may not sound their best with more subtle genres of music.
    A nice set of open back headphones, such as the HD 600s, Audeze LCD 4s, or ATH R70x are like a fine wine. They help sweeten your experience, especially with things that require more subtlety.. However, too much of it, and you'll be obnoxious to everyone around you. Wine can really tie a great meal together, but it isn't always the best idea to have it with something like fast food. Likewise, open headphones sound lovely with more subtle music, such as classical, acapella or acoustic, but often lack the bass response for rock, metal, hip hop and EDM.
    The ATH M70xs are like cough syrup. They're harsh, no one wants to have them, and are only used when a problem needs to be solved. When you're sick, you take cough syrup, not because it tastes good, but because it will help with your sickness. The ATH M70xs are not to listen to music, but to search for problems in a mix or master, as the accentuated highs will reveal many flaws that the other headphones can't. They're kind of like the Yamaha NS-10 studio monitors, which were initially intended as consumer bookshelf speakers, but have such harsh treble that studio engineers use them to correct flaws in a mix. The idea is that if you can get a song to sound decent on a pair of NS-10s then they'll sound good on pretty much anything, and I think Audio Technica had the same approach with their M70xs.
    I have been watching all of the videos in your ATH M series reviews and I have been thoroughly enjoying them. I already have a set of fairly neutral headphones (NAD Viso HP50s, I highly recommend checking them out, as they take the approach of "neutrality" fairly differently than many other headphones) and I wanted something a bit different. Something that is coloured different than my current set of headphones, and something that is rugged enough so it can be used for drum tracking (I've heard that running some consumer headphones like the HP50s way too loud can blow a driver, but not so on something like the m50x). I already owned a pair of m50s so I decided to get another pair that will be here in a few days. I also purchased a pair of SHP 9500s, for when I'm playing a game, don't want to use my main speakers, or just want to listen to something relaxing. Again, amazing videos.
    PS ( Get brainwaves earpads they make them awesome! ) ( and maybe a dbrand skin)!

    Good job. I bought the M40x's two years ago for my daughter. These are portable cans that sound good. They give you the short cable that makes it convenient to use when traveling around or just laying in bed. BTW, when I got them the pads looked a little on the thin side so I ordered a pair of Shure 1840 pads. These are velour material pads that give a softer feel without changing the sound signature. I like the equipment you have in your studio. The JBL 305's will due the trick every time....Good Luck

    First, great video. I like the way you handle yourself. Second, I own the HD800, the LCD2 PS500e and the DT1990, so I was surprised at the bang for the buck in the M40x. I needed some knockarounds and the price was unbeatable, especially with all those great reviews. I was genuinely impressed. For mobile use, these are great. The impedence is fairly low. They're easy to drive and the bass reaches low while remaining tight. I've got a pair of Beats for that skull-numbing thump but these drive low without bleeding all over the midrange. I was surprised at the level of clarity in a closed can.

    People saying m40x is better than m50x in the sense of being more accurate/flat/neutral are wrong. While it is a very good headphone, it is not better than m50x nor more flat. "The m40x have boosted lows and VERY boosted highs. It peaks about 13dbs from 8k to 10k and then there's another 10db peak at around 15-16k. The rest of the frequency is nearly the same as the m50, including that "colored" upper mid hump at 2k. The M50 has more subbass and about the same mid bass as these, which is desirable. I work in a recording studio, and the m50s sound much closer to our nearfield monitors than the m40x due to bass compensation(headphones need a ~6db boost in the lows to account for this) and the exaggerated resonances on the m40x are audible and detrimental to our field. The m50s aren't perfect as they also have a peak at 10k that extends 3db above flat but them drops off to more neutral levels thereafter. The m40x peak even more". Headphones try to achieve the same flatness as speakers and in order to do that they need a slight boost in the lows. So actually, m40x are more accurate only on graphic. Reality is m50x is more accurate and closer to flat than m40x. TH-cam sound comparisons aren´t accurate since the audio gets manipulated via TH-cam colorations and also the colorations of the headphones or speakers used to listen to these files.

      I've no idea how what you're saying is possible when so many have said the m50x have had boosted bass, and my own personal experience being that they have sharp almost painful levels of treble. I couldn't get the m50x to not sound painful at high volume. I always had to go slightly losef or eq my music to make them palatable. I don't know.

      I wish people like you would stop rambling nonsense filled with jargon to try and sound smart. It's very clear the m40x maintains flatness. See: th-cam.com/video/udLoAV7YmjA/w-d-xo.html

      asdf its kinda bogus, just compared them both back to back in Alto Music don't see what ppl are looking for the M40's are a bit weak in the lowend for me. The M50x seemed to have much better overall sound. Just for shits and giggles I'm gonna go compare them again being I'm in my first 15 days

    • @MrLolza69
      @MrLolza69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      sure if you're all about low end you might like it more, but from a critical perspective the low end makes them sound really muddy and the mids are also a bit recessed. Whereas the m40x and more natural sounding and clearer.

    • @lamarrrodriguez2431
      @lamarrrodriguez2431 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      asdf I'm not a Super bass head , not even close to a bass head but the sound I got overall in a back to back comparison and I know how to compare Headphones was the M50x had much more volume, a bigger presence of music. the M40's are dialed back so much so I had to turn up the volume to get some real feel for it.
      To state my argument I have a pair of Beats solo 2's and those seem like unbalanced headphones exciting in your face fun headphones. But its almost like ppl are calling the M50x something like beats if I said that right. So if according to the M40 folks its
      M40 > M50x > Beats.
      I think its M50x >M40's > Beats.
      And interesting enough all the cans were brand new, all had the same disadvantage. The song I listened to was Hotel California back, to Back. Its impossible that burn in is gonna change the signature that much. it'll clean up some but not a whole lot.

    • @MrLolza69
      @MrLolza69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It seems like you're just not to the neutral sound signature. It definitely takes time to get used to and may sound "boring" if you're coming from V shaped headphones like m50x or bass heavy like beats which sound more "colorful" at first.

    I don't 100% agree with this but honestly its completely up to personal preference. the m50x is a little more bass heavy and I enjoy that. when people say m50x is better or m40x is better there is no definitive answer, also keep in mind with either one getting different ear pad's made from different materials will change how your headphones sound and can sway it more towards your personal preferences. again if someone says M40X is better than m50x (or the other way around) don't let that sway your choice too much cause you may or may not enjoy it more than the other

    • @DVZNMedia
      @DVZNMedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      honestly, I don't disagree with this at all, if you actually look at what I said in the video for me the m40x is better but I've recommended the m50x to multiple people. I don't think it's a bad pair of headphones at all like some other YT'ers. Preferences and opinion always have to be taken with a grain of salt because what someone else may like might not always be the best choice for you personally.

      I think for me it's because the m50xs give a more tuned sound that may be more enjoyable for just listening to music on your phone where you're not really looking for an analytical experience. Honestly it's subjective, and I know some audio professionals who swear by them but for me if I was picking a pair to mix and edit to it would still be the m40x, if it was a pair just to listen to my playlist on Spotify it woul be the 50s

    I'm late to the game, but this is a great comparison and I've got to comment. You hinted around it, but to put it right out there, the M50s and M40s have slightly different intent, though there is certainly some overlap.
    The M40x is a bit more musical than the M50x. That's why you like them for performance. If I were going to put can on a musician or vocalist - especially bass or drum - these are what I would go to. The tradeoff is they are slightly less sonically accurate. That's the price of the musical color they add.
    The M50x is more accurate and sonically pure than the M40x. Even though they have a nice warmth, they really don't color the sound; just give some smoothness. In the control booth, for technical listening, or spoken word VO this is my choice.
    Both can certainly do the other's job and do it really well. It's just a matter of slight focus of application.
    For simple listening, it's really a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like the M50s just a hair better for their range, clarity, and better low end. Just a hair. I can *easily* understand someone preferring the m40s, however, and I couldn't fault their reasoning. This is really a case of people needing to listen to both and deciding which they prefer.

    I have a question here ... OK, I understand that the M40Xs are much cheaper than the M50Xs so the vfm winner is definitely the 40s. However, if we ignore the price tags, are the M50Xs better than the M40Xs? Obviously, there must be a diference betwin a 40mm and 45mm driver and also the higer impidence of M40Xs is somthing to consider if you want to use then with a mobile device... So what is best (also M40Xs go up to 24,000 Hz and M50Xs go up to 28,000Hz...)

    • @DVZNMedia
      @DVZNMedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +MrAndreas8787 well, and this is purely subjective, I think if you're just listening to music on mobile then the m50x are a bit better because the extra tuning. My opinion of the m40x being better refers mainly to trying to get a flatter sound for mixing audio vs. just listening to music.

    Even though you're giving a more user-centered review, on a specialist note the M40Xs are actually better than the M50Xs - they're pretty flat, specially considering their price tag, which is very desirable for many purposes from video and music enjoyment and creation to mixing and mastering, while the latter is drowned on bass on the frequency response charts...

    the bass in the 50x is thunderous for just listening to bass heacy stuff. Sound/stereo stage is kind of squished though.. Great for just listening or maybe checking final Impact after a master, but the 40x is better for mixing n tracking. The Superlux are great for watching movies and tv and gaming. Not so much for critical mixing. The high end is.......a little tinny and odd when you get surgical with your listening on them.
    Nice vid.

    Thanks for the video.. Considering the great reviews and being so cheap, I decided to give the M40x a chance. Well..., they didnt disappoint, thanks for helping on my decision to get them..
    However, I noticed the 40xs need more volume than the 50xs when I play them from my GS7.. Is this correct or should I look to other cause?

      Do you consider the 50x's being louder than the 40x's?
      Not sure if this is true to other people, or may be I got a bad set of 40x's.

    • @DVZNMedia
      @DVZNMedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you have them connected to? I only have mine connected to my audio interface, and I can't ever say i turn them up really loud. Are they just too low overall?

    • @jcmprml
      @jcmprml 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm using a Galaxy S7. I do understand that the M40x is 98db, 35 ohm, which is slightly lower at the sensitivity (which could be part of the reason) and lower impedance, but the M50x is 99 and 38; not a big difference

    • @jcmprml
      @jcmprml 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I want to make them sound as loud as the M50x's, I just turn up the volume one level.. Not that I can't leave with it..

      Oh man, sorry to hear that. I don't know if the m50x quality is that much better than the m40x, so if you're worried about them breaking again I would consider getting something like one of the cases I reviewed. Honestly, I'd look to see what kind of deals I could get, if I could find a pretty cheap m50x that might be a great deal, but I really do love the M40x's myself.

      Yea the only problem many consumers complaining about is the M40X hinges which is quite fragile. But still, many recommends M40X over M50X. Or, you can save a little bit more and get DT770 Pro

    Which one would you recommend for long session and comfort. I am confused between Sony MDR 7506 and Audio Technica M40X. Audio quality is not my priority. Comfort is my main focus for long sessions. Thank you in advance!

    • @mikhails6596

      If comfort is important to you, then definitely the Sony MDR 7506. They are better suited to just listen to music of different genres. However, for audio monitoring during video editing, I prefer to use the M40X )
