For sure. We recently replaced asphalt for a spot with keeping texture in flame. Same concept.

Update. This method works really well, actually. Better than I imagined. I tried it with surface tracker and it works really well for beauty work or portrait retouching. Very natural results. Surface tracker to stabilize and mask part of the face, like a side of the face, than I do what you showed and than copy of the surface tracker to unstable and bring back the motion. On flat surfaces like walls etc, works great for clean up using same process but with planar tracker. It also works well when using method of freeze frame and match move. Thank you for another ting to add to the tool belt. Will be using this a lot.

It's the first time i know this trick, still not sure how the white traces remain after blured version subtracted a clear verstion itself ?

Make sure you’re in 32 bit float. A cd node to change depth can do that conversion.
