The most recent Atlanta NHL team was the Thrashers, not the Trashers. The pronunciation of the name of the old Quebec City Nordiques was botched as well. It was not Nor -D -K's, rather it was pronounced Nor Deeks. As noted by someone else the Islanders have a brand new arena and are not going anywhere. As far as Hamilton, placing a team there would be objected to by both Toronto and Buffalo, so it is unlikely to happen.

I will throw my two cents out there before watching the whole video.
    1. Forget all small markets that have an NBA team. Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Charlotte are out.
    2. There are two Top 10 American metro areas without the NHL. There are Houston and Atlanta. Metro Houston has over 7 million people and metro Atlanta Has 6.1 million. The relocation of the Flames in 1980 is irrelevant to today.
    3. The biggest metro areas in the US with no wintertime team are San Diego (3.3M), Baltimore (2.8M), Cincinnati (2.3M) and Kansas City (2.4M).
    4. Quebec has 0.8M in it's metro area.So does Hamilton.
    5. Houston, Kansas City and Quebec have NHL ready arenas. The rest do not, with the possible exception of the 40 year old Copps Coliseum in Hamilton.
    6. The arena situations in Phoenix and Ottawa need to be resolved.
Therefore, I predict a 40 team league in 10 years. Houston will be first. Maryland has a funding mechanism for a new arena in it's Lottery. Kansas City and Atlanta would be next.
That's 36. San Diego and Quebec would get to 38.The last two? Hamilton or Cincinnati and Austin, Texas.

@@Punnybone55 Dude, Atlanta's movements had nothing to do with fan support.
The Flames left because the owner was a real estate developer who lost money when Jimmy Carter raised interest rates to over 21 percent. This was going to tank his real estate business, so he sold the Flames to the highest bidder, someone who took them to Calgary.
The Thrashers we're sabotaged by the owners, basically prevented from selling to local owners because of all the stipulations in a sale. They wanted the Thrashers gone, didn't want them but bought them because of it being a package deal with the arena and the Hawks. They also wanted the relocation fee, it has been said. Atlanta Spirit Group is the worst owners in the history of professional sports. What other owners other than perhaps the As sabotages the team they own?

Let’s add Houston and San Diego to the expansion NHL’s 33rd and 34th teams, and move Nashville Predators from the Western Conference in the Central Division to Eastern Conference in the Metropolitan Division to balance the 17 teams in each Conference. Hockey is getting to be popular in the warmer climate with little or no winter, like Arizona Coyotes, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, and Los Angeles Kings.

Well I have some things to say.
I completely agree with the five cities you listed. I like that you took time to research hockey-related facts about all of them. I think all of them have massive potential to becoming NHL markets. I also made a video explaining why I chose these cities.
The quality of the video was overall pretty nice. I liked the music choice and the narration was pretty well done, aside from a few pronunciation errors like on "Nordiques". Also, sometimes the clips you showed didn't match what you were talking about which was a bit distracting.
But other than that, great job! It this video definitely needs more attention.

I would also consider Sacramento, CA, Portland, OR, San Diego, CA, Baltimore, MD, Saskatoon, SK, and Houston/Austin/or San Antonio, TX.
Also, it's fun to speculate about this sort of thing, but I honestly don't see the NHL expanding any time soon (32 teams is sort of already too many), and the only team that can realistically relocate in the near future is Arizona.

KANSAS CITY!!!!! #1. The city has a modern, state of the art arena ready to go (T-Mobile Arena, 17,300 seats with over 80 luxury boxes. #2. The Hunt family (net worth of over 16-billion) would be involved in ownership group. #3. Arena located in the downtown area in a destination type of district. #4. MSA (metro statistical area) population is at 2.5 million now, (larger than 7 current NHL cities) and is projected to increase to 3-million by 2030. Corporate sponsorship base is relatively same group as those who support the Chiefs. #5. Large and diverse fan base comprising people with ample disposable income, many of whom have relocated into KC due to job transfer. #6. Every other NHL city (except Quebec City) that has lost a NHL franchise has been given a 2nd chance (Minnesota, Bay Area, Winnipeg, Atlanta-TWICE!, and Denver) and Kansas City has the best set of conditions awaiting a relocated franchise or expansion team. #7. Kansas City would also be a perfect fit for the Central Division in the NHL, with potential natural rivalries with St. Louis, Chicago, Minnesota, Nashville, Dallas and Colorado. #8. Fans who wanted to travel to see their team play in Kansas City would find ample hotel and restaurant availability, easy access to and from T-Mobile arena and into and out of Kansas City. KC is (and HAS BEEN) more than ready to be a NHL city again! What are you waiting for Gary?!!!!!!!! PUT A TEAM BACK IN KANSAS CITY!!!

Why does everyone put hamilton on the expansion list? Copps is a rundown arena not fit for nhl use without a massive overhaul. This city can’t even fill up the bulldogs games and you’d have to get both Toronto and Buffalo to agree with both being in the same market area. There’s a reason the nhl haven’t been in hamilton in 100 years and there’s no reason to think they are any closer to seeing another team in the next 100

    • @timkelly6463

I think the reason most people think of Hamilton is because of the equivalents in the US. LA Kings/Anaheim Ducks, New York Rangers/Islanders/New Jersey Devils.

Why would you not have Atlanta in the league?
Atlanta has had the highest MLS attendance for six years running, by far. It isn't even close.
Atlanta had the fourth highest MLB attendance in 2022.
The Falcons are in the top half of NFL attendance.
The Hawks are near the middle of the pack in NBA attendance.
Thus, where is this irrationality of Atlanta coming from? Atlanta lost its teams having to do with certain circumstances that COULD HAVE HAPPENED ANYWHERE. It is not a reflection of the city.
The Flames left because owner Tom Cousins was a real estate developer and during the Jimmy Carter administration, interest rates were increased dramatically. This increase in interest rates about tanked his business. To keep it afloat, he sold off his profitable asset, the Flames, TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER, which just so happened to be someone who TOOK THEM TO CALGARY, DESPITE MULTIPLE LOCAL BIDDERS. If he had chosen any other, the Flames would probably still be in Atlanta, and Calgary would have gotten an expansion team later.
The Thrashers left do to some unfortunate circumstances. The Thrashers, originally owned by Ted Turner, was acquired by Time Warner in an acquisition of Turner Sports. This included the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA, the rights to Philips Arena, and the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers.
Time Warner had the hair brained idea to merge with AOL, having no foresight that dial-up internet wasn't long standing. A few years later, AOL-Time Warner, the company as it was called, started facing financial hardships as the transition away from dial up internet took place. In order to stabilize the company, they sold their sports franchises, the Hawks, and Thrashers, and the rights to Philips Arena AS A PACKAGE DEAL. It is the package deal that was the root of what led to the Thrashers' demise. You see, it allowed a group of investors from various cities who WANTED A BASKETBALL TEAM, named ATLANTA SPIRIT GROUP, LLC, who acquired the Thrashers as a way of also getting the Hawks. Most had no interest in hockey, and most wanted to sell the Thrashers right after acquisition. There was a lone investor who did want the Thrashers, and in order to prevent the sale, he took the other investors to court. They lost a tremendous amount of money in LITIGATION COSTS, while simultaneously used most of their revenue to acquire Hawks players for exorbitant salaries, namely Joe Johnson. This left little for the Thrashers and is responsible for their continued dismal performance on the ice, having only one playoff year in which they were swept. Litigation costs forced the Thrashers to sell off most of their good players, and shortly after, the court ruled that Atlanta Spirit Group, LLC, could sell the Thrashers.
Atlanta Spirit Group sabotaged any potential buyers keeping the Thrashers in Atlanta. For one, they would not allow any new owner to receive any revenue from concessions or parking, as since Atlanta Spirit Group would still own Philips Arena (THE RESULT OF THE PACKAGE DEAL), Atlanta Spirit Group would get that revenue, not the new Thrashers owners. Secondly, it has been stated multiple times that Atlanta Spirit Group was looking to get the relocation fee from the NHL. They also apparently did not want to have to compete with the Thrashers for fans, and wanted to have Atlanta all to themselves in winter sports with the Hawks. Atlanta Spirit Group also wanted a fee from any potential buyers to USE THEIR ARENA. The loss of revenue coupled with fees to Atlanta Spirit, as well as Atlanta Spirit not taking considerably any strong contenders for sale to keep the team in Atlanta, resulted in people unwilling to take a risk, since this setup would have bankrupted any city's sports franchise.
The league was also not flexible in 2011. They would not allow the Thrashers to play at the Gwinnett Arena, an arena that holds about 9,000 fans. Years later, they went off this and now are allowing the Coyotes to play in an arena of about 4,000-5,000 fans.
The recession was in full swing during the Thrashers' departure, so this didn't exactly help things either.
All this said, it is easy to see that Atlanta's movements had nothing to do with attendance, and all with ownership. Atlanta never was last in attendance, and outsold the Bruins, Blackhawks, and Penguins some years.
Atlanta is also a huge city that makes some of these other cities that people list as possible expansion sites look like little cities. Atlanta has the third largest urbanized, built-up area in the USA, and fourth largest in the world.
Kansas City? Really? They have less than one third the population of metropolitan Atlanta, and it will become even less than that as Atlanta has robust growth, while Kansas City is kind of stagnant. Atlanta metro has about 6.2 million, while Kansas City has just over 2 million.
Lastly, Atlanta and Kansas City both play in the ECHL, and Atlanta's attendance is FAR LARGER. Atlanta's attendance is about sixty percent greater than Kansas City's in 2023. Plus, Atlanta's arena is situated in the far northeast corner of the metro, not downtown, and is difficult for two thirds of the metro area population to even get there, given the distance and traffic. By contrast, while Kansas City does not play in a downtown arena, the suburb they play in is far closer to downtown and is far more accessible to most of the metropolitan area population.

    HAMILTON
City and surrounding areas within 1-2 hours have tons of fans that cheer for Montreal, Detroit, Buffalo, Ottawa because Toronto sucks. Many of these fans would become Hamilton fans over night especially those in Hamilton, Halton, Haldimand, Brant Oxford and Niagara areas.
Its a shame Hamilton still doesnt have a team when everyone knows it would work. You got the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers, Devils and Caps all wedged in a very nearby area. Hamilton and Even London or Kitch could also have franchises that would survive. The fans/money isnt an issue here. Theyd fill the arenas.

Having Hamilton would be stupendous as it would undoubtedly create a four-way rivalry between Toronto, Buffalo, and Detroit. My first preference would be to name the franchise the 'Highlanders', with the team colour scheme correlating with the colour palette of the legendary 48th Highlanders brigade of the Canadian Army. Such a colour scheme paired with an astute style logo has the potential to become one of the most influential designs of the past 30 years. Go Highlanders!!!

We didn't lose anything. If the same ownership situations were involved with other cities the same thing would have happened.
Literally, Miami would be last in attendance average amongst markets with three or more teams in the major league sports if it were not for the Heat. It is literally the only Miami area team that has good attendance. The Panthers, Marlins, Miami soccer team, and Dolphins are near the bottom in their leagues for attendance, or in the bottom half.
With Atlanta, the United have the top attendance in the league and have for the past five years The Braves are fourth in attendance out of 30 teams. The Falcons were in the upper half in attendance. The Hawks are the worst at a little below the midline for the league.
When you average it up, the three best sports markets with three or more teams are Nashville, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Yet, for some reason, we are regarded as not good for fan bases.
The worst fan bases in the league in terms of attendance for markets with three or more teams are Phoenix, Detroit, and I think then Miami, out of 22 markets that meet the criteria of having three teams or greater.
There is literally no excusable reason to not have an NHL team in the Atlanta area, and the NHL commissioners should take note of how ridiculous it is to have a team in Raleigh, Las Vegas, Phoenix area,or south Florida and not Atlanta.

It would be nice if any of these 5 cities got a team, but the reality is that there just isn't enough talent in the world. NOBODY outside of Quebec wants teams in Quebec City more than I do. NOBODY on Earth wants an NHL team in Hamilton more than I do. But for the good of the game, it would be better for the NHL to contract and go so far as subsidize the KHL and help develop the game in China.
Sadly, Hamilton has suffered from the decline of the steel industry and has been flooded with ex-Torontonians looking for affordable housing; Hamilton has lost its identity. But even if it returned to its former glory and got augmented by a medical tech industry, there would be an insurmountable obstacle - Toronto.
Quebec City falls victim to too many places where Gary Bettman wants to sell the game. It's also a victim of politics.
