    The story of the Seattle expansion bid in 1991 is even more fascinating (and, ultimately, heart-breaking) than the 74 bid. There was a plot of land south of the Kingdome that then Sonics owner Barry Ackerley owned. It was expected that he was going to build a shiny new arena there for the Sonics and, eventually, an NHL team. The team that was putting in the bid featured a top Microsoft executive and looked to be more than assured of securing a team. Ackerley even wanted in on it & assigned his son-in-law to represent the family on the bidding team. Well, when the day came to make their presentation to the Board of Governors, the son-in-law entered the room first with the other potential owners sitting outside the room. They didn't think much of it when he asked to speak to them by himself first, but the son-in-law told the BoG that they were withdrawing their bid and left through another door. They literally never saw him again. Poof! Vanished! After a bit, the rest of the potential ownership group entered the room & were told what had just happened. And like that, it was over. Tampa Bay and Ottawa wound up getting those expansion franchises. A couple days later the Ackerley group announced they were going to renovate the Seattle Center Coliseum (which became KeyArena) and make it so it could only host an NBA team. The Ackerley site across from the Kingdome was sold and later became the land where T-Mobile Park is today. Less than 12 years after it opened, the KeyArena was labeled as not good enough and the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City. And today, as I type this, the Coliseum is once again under renovation. This time in order to house the new NHL team...starting 31 years after that entire debacle.

      I think that Quebec and Hamilton should get a team each. But not another team in Toronto. If the NHL puts a team in Hamilton, Toronto really doesn't need a second team.

    Baltimore was originally granted a franchise for the 67-68 season. They were unable to secure funding for a new arena and had issues finding a owner. That’s when the Wirtz Family stepped in. They owned the St Louis Arena. They wanted to get rid of it so they suggested St Louis get Baltimore’s Franchise. The video only got part of the Milwaukee saga correct. It is true that Lloyd Pettit did not like the expansion draft rules, another reason was the NHL franchise fee of $50 million. Pettit's biggest complaint was that the owners of the San Jose Sharks were given a discounted rate of $35 million as being previous owners, and the Sharks were able to pilfer better players than the expansion draft rules that Milwaukee would have had to utilize.

    Im so glad the pens didnt go to kansas city

    • @Chiefsfansince-qb1kt
      @Chiefsfansince-qb1kt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why? They (Kansas City) had everything in place and were ready for the Pens to move. Kansas City had (and still has) a new arena, surrounding infrastructure in place, a multi-billionaire owner (Lamar Hunt Jr), strong corporate backing, a large and growing population/sports fan base, strong economy and unlimited potential for growth. I think Kansas City would be an EXCELLENT choice for NHL expansion or, better yet, relocation. When you have a football stadium that seats 77,000 and you fill it regularly with passionate fans, and then across the parking lot have a baseball stadium that seats 40,000 and have no trouble filling it when the Royals are a contender, you have a solid fan base in place. I used to attend Scouts games during the 1970's and though the crowds were in the 7,500 range on average, they did have sellouts and the crowds were climbing toward the end of their run. The Kansas City Missouri politicians and the WHA owners screwed that situation up to the point where it became impossible to operate in the black. Half the teams in the NHL lost MILLIONS during the 1970's and poor attendance in many NHL cities was fairly common, NOT JUST IN KANSAS CITY. Kansas City would be a perfect geographical fit for the NHL's Central Division and would be an excellent stopover city for teams going East and West in order to play games.

      I agree. I loath Pittsburgh. The Pens' rivalry with the cross-state Flyers is one of the best antagonisms in all of the NHL. Imagine the Kansas City Barbecue taking the ice! Or the Kansas City Steer, or the Kansas City Regals, or the Kansas City MO's...No wonder the Scouts moved, in 1976, to higher elevations in Denver! Besides, Missouri has the St. Louis Blues to support in the heartland.

      I do agree the South is also used up. Florida makes more Sense in Quebec.

Its a blue collar town like Pittsburgh and would definitely sell out their games.
