      That is a good idea for a video, thanks for the suggestion! I tend to pack light- my bag is a 26 litre Sea to Summit Rapid containing 2 lure boxes, some fluorocarbon, a selection of soft plastics with a packet of hooks, an extra clothing layer, a hydration bladder, a sandwich, vhf radio, spare batteries and a tripod for the camera. I made a rod holder using a tied off bit of 4mm bungie and a cord lock from an old coat. Means I can keep my hands free for the approach 👍 🎣

    Great video buddy and once again all the details I needed were in the description. Randomly need some new waders and looking for suggestions, thought I’d ask, but didn’t need to, you’d already kindly provided.
    Loved the calm conditions to watch the takes, keep it up. Quick question, would you ever do a live stream Q&A in the future perhaps? Even if I knew where the locations were, I couldn’t get there, for various reasons, so have to make do with sometimes not ideal locations and conditions, but would like to pick up tips on how to improve my chances at least while I was there. If it’s something you ever think about doing then let us know. Tight lines 👍🏻

      Thanks for your comment and I can't recommend those waders enough. Used to use jackets made out of the same material, from the same brand, for ice climbing so knew that although expensive I'd be comfortable all day in them.
      I'm looking into doing live streams but just need to sort the logistics out. Will send notice once I get it sorted. Thanks for your comment, much appreciated 👍

    Hi Nathan,
    A great vid. The mighty Bass, the most majestic of sea fish.
    When you go to a new beach, and I'm refering more to the second half of the video, do you look for an area that deepens quite quickly? Or, can you lure fish succesfully across a shallow beach.Also does the clarity of the water make a big difference?
    I relocated to East Yorkshire a few years ago. Its nearly all beach casting where I live, but, as I'm unable to cast any distance, it's really a non starter. Even if I could I'd sooner fish the lure as you do.
    But as I was saying about clarity, the red clay cliffs give the water a muddy look, especially on the ebb tide. Would this make lure fishing a no no.
    My grandson asked if I'd show him how to fish. As he'd asked me over his dad, how could I refuse :) I picked up some Mackeral feathers from the local tackle shop along with instructions on how best to fish from the shore. Even at 58 I'm not too proud to ask for advice. So armed with my 12ft Greys rod, the feathers, and the sort of weight I'd have propped the door open with, I endevoured to teach him to cast!!!!
    Getting him to release the line as he cast was a major problem. It resulted in the lead swinging back and forth like a pendulum. He looked like some medieval knight just getting some practice swings with a mace. On my part, I was wincing each time the lead narrowly missed the blank of my much favoured rod. Luckily he soon got bored. This year I've picked up a second hand Shakespeare curtesy of ebay.He can practice with that to his hearts content.I thought a single lure as the way forward, and we shall see if he's been touched by Isaac.
    I imagine you're one of those people whom I've met now and again, give them an old garden cane, a length of string, and a bent pin and they'll still catch! :)
    I learnt long ago that you just can't replicate how someone else fishes (rod, reel, line lure) it does'nt work like that.
    But your videos show a way, an instructive way, that at least puts a body on the right track to success. And more power to you.
    Stephen

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stephen, thanks again for a great post! I think I’m starting to enjoy your posts more than my videos :-)
      When I first go to a new place, I tend to try to look for the fish by covering as much of the water around as possible by moving a lot and casting a long casting lure. It seems that bass aren't necessarily always in the deeper water but they definitely like structure- things like boulders, reef or a weed lined edge- like the 2nd mark in this video. This beach is pretty flat so the edges of the beach, apart from a boulder in the middle, are the likely location of fish.
      The water clarity can make a difference but you can look at it in 2 ways: 1. they will never see your lures and fish won't feed while the water is dirty, or, 2. Predators can feel comfortable/safer because they are concealed by the dirty water, then they can use smell or vibration to attack their prey (our lure). I prefer the 2nd option because it's more positive and it can be proved by cod fishing, we both know that Cod prefer dirty water before they come too close to shore.
      As for Yorkshire, although I’ve not fished it much, apparently there is meant to be a good head of bass and plenty of people catch them. Carefully fishing the flood might be a good idea if you'd prefer the water to be clearer or maybe on the ebb during smaller tides.
      With regards to stick and line angler you mentioned; I've met that type of natural angler too so I can't be one of them. Kind of you to say so though :-)
      Tight Lines!

    Hi Slippy,
    Thanks for your videos - I always enjoy them.
    I note from your description that your leader is heavier than your mainline. I know this is common - or not uncommon at least - but I've never understood the logic behind it. To my mind, if the leader is lighter than the mainline then, in the event of a snag, the leader is most likely to break where it's connected to the lure. If it's the other way around, as in your case, surely the most likely break point will be at the union of the mainline to the leader? Hope that makes sense? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated; thanks in advance!

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tim,
      It's a great question you're asking and, in my eyes, there's not really a wrong or right answer because either way I'm going to lose a lure, a fish or both.
      Here's my logic though; to me, a leader has 2 functions-
      #1 Using fluorocarbon is a more subtle (visually) than using braid straight through to the lure.
      #2 Fluorocarbon is a lot more abrasion resistant than braid so in the event of it rubbing a rock then it's got far less chance of snapping than braid does. Reducing the diameter of the leader reduces this resistance to abrasion.
      When I'm fishing I'm not really worried about snagging up but I would be gutted if a hooked fish took cover behind a rock and snapped me off, so taking the above into account, I think #2 is the most important consideration and the reason why I tend to use a heavier leader.
      Hope this makes sense and thanks again for your comment!

    how much do your surface/shallow lures weigh? i cast with a 10-28 g rod with braid and always have probs getting good distance

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of my lures are around 16g which seems to be the sweet spot for my rod. You're braid breaking strain and length of drop when casting can have a huge impact on distance not to mention the type of lure you're throwing. If your plugs have a internal weight system then make sure all the ball bearings are at the tail of the lure before you cast. Hope this helps 👍

    The trips you go on are great, some dodgy stuff but you're still with us so safe enough if you know it well.
    I used to be obsessed with beachcasting but got really sick of carrying the world on my back with me to the marks I wanted to fish, best choice I ever made was buying a smaller rod and much lighter gear and going and buying a load of lures, I don't feel like I want to die when I get back from fishing anymore which is great because it's a lot more fun when you're not knackered trying to fish.
    Great video, good luck on your next sessions. (Dan)

      You're right about beach casting, it can be great on it's day but lure fishing, in my eyes, is a lot more proactive than hoping for the best, plus you get to buy loads of lures and they don't weight much :-)
      I have used the line through Eel but have yet to land anything on it. It casts like a bullet but, because of its slim profile, it doesn't have much bight in the water, so not much good on a windy day because you quickly loose contact with the lure.
      I hope this helps and Tight Lines, Dan!

      Great help thanks very much, I might go out this weekend or tomorrow if I get chance.
      It's going to be cooling down towards the weekend so it'll probably slow the bites down so fingers crossed for tomorrow evening.
      I can't wait for summer to get here, getting fed-up of the cold, looks at least a few weeks away but it'll be good when the wrasse and Mackies show up in good numbers.
      Jet ski for next year I think, try and cut down on the mountaineering Llandudno is getting lethal these days on zigzag way but the fishing off it is always pretty good, not as much fun fishing next to corpses of sheep that have tried walking down there.
      I was going to get a kayak but living on the entrance of the river Dee won't let me do that, I don't want to risk the currents pulling me out to Ireland so the cheapest jet ski will do as long as it floats and drives I'll catch something on it even if it's just a cold lol.

    Fantastic video as usual pal what was the single hook lure you had the third fish on it seemed to cast like a bullet ? Cheers

      It's a Xorus Patchinko 100 but I swapped the trebles out for the singles. One of my favourites and you're right it does cast like a bullet! Cheers and tight lines!

      Slippy Limpets cheers for the reply, aye over the last couple of years I’ve switched completely to singles with pinched barbs, the missed takes don’t hurt as bad when you realise the damage trebles can do to young fish, never mind trying to remove one from a wrasse mouth!

      Totally agree with you, it`s the schoolies that suffer the most with trebles, but I must admit I haven`t yet crushed the barbs on my singles. I`ll give it a try this season though. Maybe it might help filter out the smaller fish?

      Slippy Limpets and when I say I pinch the barbs I do it ever so slightly to try and retain a small barb, and on that point sometimes the smaller guys can save a big old blank for me anyway!
