I don't find it too slow because it's Jessye Freakin' Norman! She's the only one who could sing it so slowly, yet maintain the phrases so beautifully. It works and works superbly.
Wow. Wow. Wow. In its extra-slowness, this is a special interpretation -- but oh how Jessye Norman delivers. Just the fact that she is physically capable of delivering this piece at this pace goes far toward justifying this interpretation, in my view. We who know the song can hold its melody in our minds as we revel, as it were breathlessly, in Ms. Norman's sumptuously unfolding transitions. An ultra-satisfying performance. DIVINE.
Poet: Friedrich Rückert If you love for beauty, oh, do not love me! Love the sun, she has golden hair! If you love for youth, oh, do not love me! Love the spring, it is young every year! If you love for treasure, oh, do not love me! Love the mermaid, she has many shimmering pearls! If you love for love, oh yes, do love me! Love me ever, Ill love you evermore! Beautiful!:)
This is, of course, a matter of taste. I find this tempo to be exceptionally convincing because this exceptional singer is able to maintain the musical tension throughout the entire song.
Sorry, my English is not very good and I don't understand the expression "it fall apart". Could you help me please? As for this performance, I can't say this is not good, but I don't like it: too slow for me. Ops! Sorry Jessye.
Schöner geht es nicht.....ich weine vor Ergriffenheit......RIP bella Jessye...you have been a wonderful gift to musiclovers!
A wonderful gift to us good music lovers indeed

Devine indeed...
Just Divine performance indeed
May be slow but beautifully and heartfelt performance... This is Jessye :) and She sings it tenderly and with lots of love on the voice :)
Adieu Jesse. One of the greatest performances of one of the greatest songs ever written
If you love for beauty,
O love not me!
Love the sun,
She has golden hair.
If you love for youth,
O love not me!
Love the spring
Which is young each year.
If you love for riches,
O love not me!
Love the mermaid
Who has many shining pearls.
If you love for love,
Ah yes, love me!
Love me always,
😮❤
I have attempted to find this broadcast on DVD. No one ever produced the like. Too bad; this was a great performance.
Very moving approach to singing this song. Positively admired me!

Lyrics and English translation
Liebst du um Schönheit,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe die Sonne,
Sie trägt ein goldnes Haar.
Liebst du um Jugend,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe den Frühling,
Der jung ist jedes Jahr.
Liebst du um Schätze,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe die Meerfrau,
Sie hat viel Perlen klar.
Liebst du um Liebe,
O ja, mich liebe!
Liebe mich immer,
Dich lieb’ ich immerdar.

Zu perfekt - zu schön - die ägyptische Prinzessin!
What a pity this video is defective. There is only audio in the right channel. ☹️🎹
@wedidntknow I respect your opinion. Actually, whether people like or don't like this interpretation, doesn't matter.
Kind regards,
Jacques
Much too slow...... The text is lost. Wonderful voice!

I am sorry but I think it's a little bit slow. Don't you think so?
Jacques Mestre no jacques... c’allait... c’est genial!
No, I don't.
she is so graceful.....God i cant stand her!!! lol
Es ist perfekt, aber es fehlt die wahre Innigkeit!
I do not agree.
@Mousetrap999 She can do it though :-))) but the orchestra can't - that rippling swaying cadence at the end is ruined at such a slow tempo.
A little? It is so slow, it falls apart. Very self-conscious...
Sorry, my English is not very good and I don't understand the expression "it fall apart". Could you help me please?
As for this performance, I can't say this is not good, but I don't like it: too slow for me.
Ops! Sorry Jessye.
vous avez raison, c'est trop lent - la mélodie n'a plus de la forme, elle se démonte
Much too slow, formless.
