Easy Watercolor Bird Tutorial for Beginners | Swatching A. Gallo Signature 2 Handmade Paints

- Loose watercolor birds for beginners: an easy watercolour bird tutorial using A Gallo watercolors plus a better way of swatching new watercolor paints, as well as getting started with color mixing.
A good way for beginners to get started with watercolor is to learn how to draw and then paint little birds. They don't have to be exact replicas of the real thing, and in fact using your imagination to create fantasy birds is one of the most rewarding ways to start your art journey.
You can use any medium and any colors, and the composition and other elements of making a painting are reduced in this type of meditative doodle.
A new way to Swatch! When you get a new box of paints, after you've unwrapped them the first thing you are tempted to do is to make a swatch sheet. Indeed, the manufacturers often supply a small piece of card for you to do that on. And it's very useful as a note or memory jogger of what the colors in your tin look like - roughly - when you wet them.
But a better way, I think, is to actually use all the colors to paint something simple. So I'm sharing with you a sketch of twelve little birds and some leaves and branches which you can use to try all of your twelve colors, straight from the tin, for the birds. And then you can mix lots of greens and greys to make the colors for the branches and leaves.
As well, you can practice drawing the birds, as you don't need to make them in any way accurate. Just use your imagination!

I did some birds tonight in my watercolour sketchbook whilst watching and listening to you. I just got a set of watercolour paints in pastel shades, and painted the birds with them. At first my husband wondered where the roosters were and then in a few minutes he started crowing and as always, it made us happy. My husband sometimes refers to you as the “rooster lady” so he knows which channel I’m referring to when I share with him about the various videos I watch😊. I’m getting a little better at drawing birds, I’m happy to say.

Drawing…yes please! I’m generally better at drawing than painting. I learned from a TH-cam tutor named Shayda Campbell but I would love a different perspective.
Hoping to get something started this spring. I have watched Shayda for years - she's a good designer but her drawing style is very different from mine, you'd definitely get a different perspective from me!!!!!

You are my favorite person on TH-cam! So please understand that this is not criticism just an observation and I’m sure it arises out of some kind of disability I possess…. Here goes. It’s the background music. Is this something new for you because I don’t remember it from most of your videos. Once I hear it I can’t not hear it and it starts to irritate me for some reason. I think because I’m trying to listen to you and the music distracts. I’d so much rather listen to your rooster and other farm sounds in the background. I’m probably the only one who’s said anything because I’m so sensitive but I just wanted you to know and of course I respect your right to do whatever you want. It won’t stop me watching and enjoying your work. Thank you!
Thanks Val, so glad you are enjoying the videos. We have been thinking about the music element and whether or not to continue using it. It is a lot of work to add music successfully to any video and we have often wondered whether it is worth it. We have gone back and forth over the last year between adding it, not adding it and adding it in part. Interesting to get your feedback on it. We have decided to leave the music off for a while and see what the effect is on our viewership, so thanks very much for your input and support, and enjoy the upcoming videos, music-free!!!!
