Recently I have been setting up smart playlist by year, duration, and title [contains] due to the fact I like podcasts. I mix them together for that awesome custom seamless DJ one-off feel I am taking people on a trip through time or times experienced and now into the future all shifting between blended in.
So not only does the smart playlist accommodate my offset style of mixing and blending full-on hourly sets, keeping track of the old and the new with certain characteristics, it helps me sort of create a flux between the realities then-to-now then back again through space-time and mood.
Like a Drum & Bass set going from old-school almost jungle or garage breakbeat hinting today, but then arranged [sort by] to the more complex Neurofunk styles promoting cyber-futuristic-funk mixed with today's all meshed in one long journey :)

I was doing this in iTunes (smart playlists) for BPM ranges, but this is making more and more sense to use this in Serato! I just have to make sure my songs are tagged correctly. Especially with year. Thanks for the great info!

I do it all with Itunes- therefore its the brain- Serato will clone it- much more control in Itunes my thought .

Great video as usual! I preview tracks on the dj city app on my phone than the ones I like I selected the app and it sent it to my desktop for download. Then I make a crate in Serato just named the month and year, dump all the dj city tracks in there that I preapproved, then I make a crate of that month and add the word pics to it and those are mostly the house tracks that I end up playing at the club.
Once I have the picks I make record box folders on the same SD card/USB drive where I keep all my music.

Apart from 'Smart' playlists and crates, there are filter features on a different level that exists in rekordbox and virtual dj that makes finding tracks much easier once tagged with a particular name given.

Love your videos! Very helpful. I’ve been using my iTunes folders and files forever with Serato. I’ve now been thinking I want to switch over to crates and smart crates. And I love how easy it is using Smart Crates. My only problem is, my music files are set as I purchases or acquired them. Title, artist, genre, etc. To use Smart Crates, I would have to go into my files and rename a large amount of my music to make this transition. There are songs I use all the time when I DJ, but I don’t see how I would set up a rule with Smart Crates, to create a file.

I was revisiting your previous tagging system video from 5 years ago.
The two together help me a lot to decide between Rekordbox and Serato.
Rekordbox tagging system and Related tracks system are very powerfull. But Serato has TR-Sync, Flip, emoticons in the list, much better Grid edit, Pitch'n'Time, easier Mixed in Key integration.

This is very helpful I had no idea how smart crate works now that I do I want to give it a test drive. I normally create my crates on my documents on my Mac and have folders that match my crates on Serato. As time went by I want to make playlists to play songs I might not play as often. The question I have if for example if I make a 80s smart crate is there away for it to also go to my folder in my documents? or is this only a Serato software thing?

DJs remember, you are SMARTER than some stupid algorithm. Take the time consuming way and consume yourself with YOUR music and decide where it belongs. You become better acquainted with your music and crates. This is cool for some on the fly shit, but spend TIME with your music. Peace!

You should definitely watch the video because it involves "taking the consuming way and consuming yourself with YOUR music" (that you didn't make) to decide where it belongs. By tagging it and then using the tags to put it in crates. Stop talking out your ass.

The Problem with Smart Crates is that when you have several it slows down your computer. It continuously re analyzes the crates and puts strain on the computer. I switched back to regular crates because of this. Smart crates in a perfect world is great though just not practically efficient yet unless you have a supper powerful computer

someone said that "I used to have a ton of genres and decade crates on my hard drive, but then dumped all my music into a single folder and created smart crates for all genres and decades. Smart crates make life simpler, for me at least".
but my question is How would you manage songs if you have folders for different genres and events, each with subfolders? Dumping them all into one giant folder would create a long list, making it hard to find songs. How do you handle this?"

A star ratings systems would be useful in Serato.. rather than us having to make one up.

I am incredibly envious of all DJs who live in regions where they dont have to make Country crates... seriously... I am in OKC and almost every gig I play I have to scrub through country songs because you will be chastised if someone requests country and you dont have any here. But best practice is just sprinkle it in, it pleases crowds here but I HATE IT! Lol...

    • @PDot
      @PDot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

For situations like that I would just have those tracks sprinkled into my library but now thanks to streaming services being integrated I don’t even have to do that anymore! I just connect to Wi-Fi and search for the track! No more water hard drive space on songs I don’t really like.
