In November 2014, a few friends and I joined a group to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa!
I had heard that while it's not crazy difficult, it still does require preparation. We only had 2 months and were scrambling to get everything together, but once we got there it was all worth it.
What makes Mount Kilimanjaro unique is that it has literally 5 different climates so frankly you NEVER get bored. We took what is known as the ‘Whiskey route’ or Machame route which typically takes 7 days and goes over 30 miles (50 km) to the summit. And the journey, mapped out in this vlog, was nothing short of incredible.
After descending the mountain, I wrote this in a blog post about my experience:
“If you saw the majestic sunrise over a glacier to one side, a crater to the other, with the vast African savannah below you, after hiking for 5 days straight, watching some of your team not make it to the top, while constantly fearing you would succumb to the altitude sickness, tell me, would you not cry with happiness? Would you not embrace the moment and recognize your small place in the world? Would you not recognize the power of an almighty force for creating this incredible backdrop to humble you and make you so grateful to be alive?”
