The cheerful, happiest, uplifting musical number in the movie! It is Awesome! I also Live I'd Do Anything! It's A Fine Life! Omm! Pah Pah! Shani Wallis as Nancy is Perfectly Brilliant! Consider Yourself! Be Back Soon! You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two! Food Glorious Food! As Long as He Needs Me! Author Charles Dickens as child and his mother and father were forced to live in the workhouses because his father had to borrow money and went into debt just so the family good be together and live modestly. The wealthy men he borrowed from were ruthless! They did manage to leave the workhouse! The workhouses were barbaric, brutal, cruel and inhumane! That is why Charles Dickens wrote so many novels about the workhouses because of his experience in the harsh conditions and to put an end to the workhouses! His novels Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol, and A Tale of Two Cities all reflect the brutal workhouses!
I love the way it builds up and then it speeds up when the gentlemen come out of their houses on their way to work. Beautiful scene and brings a tear to the eye every time I watch it.
One of the best of the musicals, made at a time when there was still the ability to write music, and producers and backers willing to make quality shows.
the only reason for the string of "roadshow" musicals in the late sixties was the gigantic freak succes of The Sound of Music in 1965...none of them equaled it and by 1970 the genre was dead....but this film in particular was magnificent
What a wonderfully joyous (and very complicated & extended) scene. The team of immense talents that conceived this amazing sequence, let alone then planned, rehearsed and actually shot and captured it on film deserves every bit of the universal praise showered on the film (nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won six) upon its release in 1968.
Makes me think back to my childhood in Maywood, California when a fruiterer truck passed down our street selling what's in season. The strawberry smell was divine. It must have been about the time this movie debuted.
@@cathyspinelli9541 Shepperton Studios. The three trees in the middle of the gardens still remain though at the far end of Studios Road surrounded by houses. The one Oliver Reed is leaning against is closest to the bus stop.
We performed this poignant musical Oliver Twist at school, Dr Graham's Homes Kalimpong India, back in the 70s. It created a very deep impression on our young souls as every song, every scene, every character, every piece of dialogue struck us emotionally. Beautiful memories have been rekindled while listening to them in this video. We were in our teens then but the romance in the classics of Charles Dickens, still remains.
This is not even my era but I loved this movie so much when I was a kid. Now I realize this was a grand production. So many people in one scene!! And no computer graphic. It captures so much raw energy and talent
I always remember when I was a kid we our family always watched this movie Oliver everytime before Christmas coming .Mark Lester looks like Alfie Anido in local movie actor.
Beautiful movie and great all artists are part in this movie. We always watched this movie with our family when i was in my younger years on tv channel 7 and it was late 80's .
This scene is brilliant symbolism. This scene is a contrast to the beginning of the film. At the start of the film, Oliver is obviously living a life of misery with the others in the workhouse. Here though everyone is happy and gay and go about their day to day lives in joy and contment while those in the workhouse suffer the same misery day in day out. And Oliver is fortunate to experience this as the other boys in the workhouse won't.
I love Oliver Twist hate musicals but love the 1968 version. I idolise Ron moody this is special to me the energy I feel listening to this is like an emotional atomic bomb that would light the whole country for a year. This song reminds me of my mother it’s so special to me I keep it in my hart. This particular song gets me because of the words..who will buy my sweet red roses two blooms for a peeny… who will but it in a box for me so I can see it at my leisure to last my whole life long..the fall out has lasted a life time I’m a career for my aging mum and will loyally stay buy her side..so what am I two do to keep this sky so blue.. this musical is magical to me it’s more then just a musical it speaks to my soul ❤
Awesome Muscal Song and Dance Number! Very Uplifting! Then the camera cuts to the scene of Bill Sikes with Bullseye his dog and the Artful Dodger. That is what leads to the barbaric, brutal heartbreaking vicious, violent murder of Nancy by the abusive, mean, violent criminal Bill Sikes! Nancy doesn't portray Bill Sikes to the law, she just wants to return Oliver to his great Uncle, Mr. Brownlow so Oliver can have a decent, happy life!
@@valerieboots4267Mark Lester got the role of Oliver purely because of his looks. He had that innocence and cuteness they were looking for. But he couldn’t sing or dance, which is why his singing voice is dubbed and you rarely see him dancing in this musical. Fortunately he could act, so that kind of masked his lack of singing and dancing talents.
The 1968 classic movie Oliver! is one of my favorite movies of all time! The beautiful and extremely talented actress, singer, dancer, entertainer and performer Shani Wallis is the best and one and only Nancy ever! Shani Wallis should have received the Golden Globe Award, the BAFTA Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Academy Award for best actress in a motion picture for her brilliant and excellent portrayal of Nancy in the 1968 classic movie Oliver! It should be Dame Shani Wallis! All the movie musicals numbers in this classic 1968 movie Oliver! are fantastic! I own this classic and excellent movie on DVD and Blue-Ray! I think the beautiful blonde actress and singer singing who will buy My Sweet Red Roses is excellent! I was born in late fall of 1978. All the beautiful and handsome singers and dancers in this excellent movie musical number are perfect! The 1968 classic movie Oliver! received a special Academy Award for best choreography in a motion picture! The classic 1968 movie Oliver! also received Academy Awards for best musical score, best director and best picture plus two other Academy Awards! The 1968 classic movie Oliver! deserved every one of them! And should have received more Golden Globe Awards, more BAFTA Awards, more Screen Actors Guild Awards and more Academy Awards! Thank you for posting and sharing this classic and excellent movie musical song and dance number!
In an interview, Shani Wallis recalled how she got the part of Nancy. She was a guest on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and she impressed Mike Frankovich, who was the head of Columbia Pictures at the time. Frankovich flew her out to Columbia in Hollywood for a screen test. She immediately got the part and the rest was history. She was a perfect Nancy.
My friend said she went to see Oliver in London and she said the woman from Coronation Street was on it I don't know if that's right violet Carson anybody know if that was the Violet Carson who was in Coronation Street
The movie puts a more joyous face on the reality of the times. Read the book. Charles Dickens was an amazing writer. This world is what Republicans (and undeservedly wealthy Dems) dream to drag us back to.
This is my favorite scene from "Oliver," my favorite musical. Superb sets, costumes, singing, dancing and choreography.

Who will buy this wonderful feeling?
Beautiful movie with great actors... please time go back
The housekeeper was so sweet. She loved Oliver like her own son.

I thought I’d found where they filmed this as a kid by Regents Park, how disappointed when I was told it was a studio set lol. Love this scene 👍🍻🇬🇧
It broke my heart

I had always thought it was the royal Crescent in bath before I found out it was in shepperton lol
I was in care in the Shirley Oaks children's home when this came out, so it had a particular poiniency for me as still has over 50 years later!

Acted in a community theater presentation of Oliver. I am not a singer. But one of my favorite plays to be in. Wish I could sing.
I think your reaction is precisely why the film won Best Picture and 2001 A Space Odyssey did not.

Hallo
Hope you are well
Best scene from this Masterpiece!!! (shout out to Mark Lester's singing, his voice hipnotizes me🥲)
Not him.
Lester was dubbed by the daughter of musical supervisor John Green.

Wow I didn't know that Oliver had such a beautiful singing voice he sings like an angel
He didn't. It was not him. Mark Lester did not sing on this film. It was a young lady Kathe Green
To be fair, most of us thought it was him at the time.
Two of the girls fall flat on their backs at 7:15
Who will buy this wonder morning ??
"I'm so high I swear I could fly". Well this did come out in the 60s after all 😂
