Why has the Image Workbench been removed in FreeCAD 0.21 ?

- For anyone using FreeCAD 0.2.1 (at time of speaking a development release) then you will notice in later versions that the image workbench no longer exists. The image workbench allows you to import reference images, scale them to a measurement and use them for reference or tracing. This video takes you through what it has been replaced with and how to use the new image reference manipulation tools.

Thank you so much for this video and your fast response to my comment in the original how to video!
Thank you. Happy to help
That's so much better! Image workbench was so unintuitive I had to look up a tutorial each time I wanted to import and scale an image. Especially that last step with selecting an image that would give an error every time.
I just moove on freecad and discover your videos, I just love to follow them, was at the 4th tuto, hopefully you upload this one now I can go back to my learning, thank you :)
Great to hear 😊 Glad your enjoying them. The learning freecad is up to something like episode 45 so plenty to learn from plus I am making new videos all the time. Have a look of the CAD thinking tutorials. There are a number of playlists for different areas so have a look and have fun 😁
Not a workbench I use often, but thanks for the heads up! The scale upgrade is off the hook!
Hey Mango Jelly, thanks for your great videos!
Glad you like them! And my pleasure
1:34 - This is where the juice is. Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated.
im acutely fallowing a different video you have utilizing image in 0.20 and i was like hey that tool is gone it took me some time to find all this out thank you for showing me how to keep up in the new version.
Glad I could help!
I hope they add a constrain option to the calibration tool so that you can be sure your lines are horizontal or vertical.
Import the image in GIMP, show the grid and rotate to match, then export.
Quick and useful.
Thanks.
I just experienced this a few hours ago… working on a model that needs 0.21 features I first thought "dammit, image bench gone… now what???" but gladly I found the solution quite quick. And I already like new new workflow much better! 🤩
Glad I could help, David on Patreon gave me the heads up so all credit to him. Might have to add this as a sticky comment on all videos have some tracing.
Just wanted to say , Thank you so much I really appreciate it !!
No problems at all. :) Glad to help.
Thanks for the info , i was looking for the image workshop :P
That was a good for me mr. I have 0,21 and belive me i was wondring about this thing. Thanks allot 😊
Glad I could help
Thanks a lot for your explanation!
You very welcome :)
Thanks! really apricate your videos!
Thank you, I enjoying sharing the knowledge 😊
If more precision is needed, you can also zoom in and position the calibration endpoints more precisely.
Thanks for this video. As always, your video are very well presented and easy to follow. :-)
You're very welcome!
Wow nice tutorial, I was looking for it, need it all the time, thx for the good job.
Glad I could help :)
I'm glad to read positive feedback :)
I was looking for this video
There is another great improvement in this new image tool: the image is now double-sided! In the image workbench, the back of the image was black.
Thanks for adding that 👍
Thank you very much friend
Thank you for this!
They made a great decision to finally replace the Image workbench with regular support for image imports. It was really non-intuitive that one had to use a separate workbench just to import and scale an image.
It's important to remember that Workbenches are merely collections of tools.
This is not mentioned enough in FreeCAD tutorials. You can even create your own customisations of existing workbenches.
Agree so much more intuitive and makes much more sense.
I think I am going to include that piece of advice in future tutorials. That's a good piece of information to get across. Thank you
If i import a JPG File , i can see the Picture in the Workspace but there is no techdraw into the tree at the right side. Can you help. i work with 0.21.1 Version.
Thanks mate!!!
Thank you very much
Thanks for this video!
My pleasure!
Well spotted David
THANK YOU!!
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Excellent!
cool, thank you!
thanks heaps for the clarification, honestly this was a good decision on freecad's part, the image workbench seems kinda redundant, seeing as it has just three "tools", it was a good idea to just merge it with the general functionality of the program imo
Thanks!
I was going cazy lol, Thanks!!!!
Glad to help 😁
great video , but where have the scale tools gone tho
Thanks
Thank you so much 😊👍👍
Bonus Feature: you can also simply drag'n'drop image files from your computer's file browser into the project's object tree. This is really cool.
Thanks for pointing that one out, I didn't know that you can just drag and drop them in 👍
@@MangoJellySolutions btw, this works with other (all?) file formats as well, just dragged and dropped STEP and STL into a project - test passed. :)
I find this quite handy, because my file browser is *much* more comfortable and efficient than the "open file" dialog from within applications.
Off Topic: 0.20.* de-installed. ;)
How do you add a second image like you did in the freecad for beginners 5.2, my import is grayed out?
how do you move the root point if you add a sketch in order to render from an image for 0.21.2
You can import a PDF as an image and scale it, this has been available in Realthunder’s version but wasn’t in the Image workbench.
Thanks fir adding that, great addition 😊👍
Thank you so much i was going crazy which that problem know i can move to .21
Glad I could help
Just got going again on free cad and what is the first thing that I need to do, scale an image. Thanks for the video.
Glad I could help! 😊
🔥
How do I rescale the image as in Lesson 5.2 without the Image Workbench. When I double click the image I can get to calibrate but the image is no longer there.
I just get a gray box, no image. Zooming in our out, rotating, refresh.. no image comes thru. Even tried different supported formats - still nothing.
Freecad needs to enable import of native .pdf's for imaging purposes. Most technical data sheets are in pdf format.
I'm running 0.21.2 and I can't find Image Workbench anywhere :(
This video will help you
After rotating the image, when I open a sketch, the image reverts back to its original orientation.
I'm sad because I see the 0.21 is not yet officially available 😞 this with the image is really great nd it makes the experience way better
It's available as weekly builds, give it a try.
The weekly builds on github are 100 % official. And they're as stable as 0.20 in my experience, can't say that they crash more often. I have auto save 3 mins and save manually before taking actions known to end in unpredictable results… just like I did in 0.20. The overall improvements are worth it.
@@NUeB_net They can be even more stable than 0.20 since they include many bug fixes. Plus there’s a feature freeze and 0.21 will be released soon so weekly builds should be really safe to use at this point.
@@NUeB_net and @Gumball_W thank you
@@NUeB_net I've always used the development builds , either daily or weekly.
In my experience they are very stable.
How do you attach an image to a different plane, other than the standard planes?
What replaces Image CreateImagePlane
Double click the image in the tree view and you be able to select the plane or rotate it into position
How to put image on a body face other than X,Y and Z? Older versions allowed us to put the image with more flexibility !
You should be able to click on the image and in the details tab there should be a map mode. I might be wrong but worth a look.
I would like to see an absolute beginning to professional expert all in one video on the latest version, and again as new versions come out, it's always good to have a refresher , but currently I'm basically a beginner, I drive for a living, with that in mind, it would be nice if the video was structured in such a way to where if your only listening to it, that there would be a lot I could take away from it. So when I do get to watch with eyes on the learning experience would be a bit easier.
I got lots of things I need to design. Like a combination engine with only one moving part, way better than the wankel engine, and so much more
My father used to work on wakel engines back in his mechanic days 😊. Thanks for sharing the situation you gave with learning, I am thinking about how to structure that. It almost feels that you want something that can be listened to as a pod cast that goes through the theory and design intent. I trialed a CAD episode of a possible series called CAD thinking which explained how to read a physical object to get it into a digital form and have been thinking lately how to bring that back for another episode. And as you say the newest release of freecad has appeared so be good to do something.
@MangoJellySolutions Awesome! An idea of an approach you maybe could take on the learning...
Pretend someone is standing over your shoulder, but they can't see your screen lol, but their memory is flawless and they will remember 100% of what you speak...
And when you done teaching, they have to build something particular that uses as many features/principles/concepts as possible in this one design, while asking you the least amount of questions possible.
Is there a way to map an image to a face?
I am looking at the videos that I have ready to release and I have one covering just that. In the mean time here are the steps.
1) Import your image and adjust to the size you want.
2) Click the image first and then ctrl click the face.
3) Select top menu > edit > align
4) You screen will be split in two with one side saying movable object.
5) click on top left of the image, top right, bottom left. 3 point will be added.
6) Do the same on the face you want to map it to.
7) Right click, and click align.
You should now see the image aligned to the face.
@@MangoJellySolutions Thanks a million Mango! Your videos are really helping me through this FreeCAD Journey! Excited for more videos!
FYI: As of today, 2. August 2023, FreeCAD 0.21 is officially released.
Woooohooooooo 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Thank for the verbose explanation.
You're welcome
You should have done this with your gasket image. LOL
Now that's a good idea, it will make the thumbnail better and link it back to the original video. :)
@@MangoJellySolutions I figured it out, but I'm not the quickest mouse in the house, so a minute or two. LOL
@@MangoJellySolutions BTW, thanks so much for the tutorials. Is the content on your patreon more in-depth?
@@ronin2167 My pleasure. The content on patreon is early access to the youtube videos and written tutorials / steps that support the videos.
Thanks!
Your Welcome 😁
