How to Create Hip Power-Proper Walking Technique

  • This simple exercise will help you feel how to create power from your hips depending on the circumstance. Our glutes (hip extensors) and or iliopsoas (hip flexors) are used at different times to power each step we take. Keeping proper posture and alignment requires using the right muscles at the right time. This is easier said than done, and it is why so many people walk with a forward posture, pelvic tilt, or with duck feet. It also explains why so many people have a heavy heel strike and end up with joint problems that sometimes need medication, injections, or even surgery. Fixing or preventing these issues can be as simple as learning the right way to use your core, including your hips. If you are like everyone else, no one ever taught you this stuff. So here it is. This lesson is part of The Walking Code by Dr. Todd Martin. With The Walking Code, you will learn the various patterns of core movement that we all use, or should use, to walk and do other functions with proper alignment, improved fluidity, and lower impact on the joints.
    Use these tips to help prevent back, hip, knee, ankle, and foot issues. Also use it to walk with more confidence and reduce your risk of falling.

    What made you decide to research better walking technique? Were you looking for it, or did TH-cam place a video in front of you? Let me know. Also, what other content would you like to see on the channel?

      Hello @ToddMartinMD Can you please explain the mechanism involved when it comes to knee height /big stairs. If you create a video with big stairs, that would be really helpful

    Dr. Martin, I sought help through TH-cam. You were concentrating on walking. That’s what I needed. I’m proud to say I am walking smoother and I credit my improvement to you. Both my knees are bad. I had surgery on my right knee years ago. My orthopedic doctor has been talking replacement forever. I have put it off for so long. Your advice has helped my knee performance tremendously. I must admit I had a cortisone injection three weeks ago. I used to get the other type injections. They all wear off too soon. Now I only get cortisone every couple of years. Nice while it lasts! I found your videos within the last year. I am walking much better. One P.T. Asked me what I wanted from therapy. I told him I wanted to walk like a lady. Getting there! Now I want to concentrate on continuing my new good habits and concentrate on strengthening the CORRECT muscles to prepare for surgery. Thank you for your instruction. My daughter-in-law has her doctorate in a related P.T. field, but she lives in another part of the state. You are my “go to” support. Thanks again.

    73 year old active female with hip pain on walking due to tendonitis. I looked for a video to learn to walk in a way that minimizes my pain during walking and strengthens my glute muscles. As an RN I know that incorrect walking that may involve guarding against pain can cause problems long term. So I appreciate your videos greatly in my quest for a healthy, safe gait.

    I'm watching because it popped up on TH-cam. I will have to practice this... I don't quite understand how walking upstairs is different from walking uphill from walking on level ground. Seems to me it's the same muscle lifting... just lifting to different extents. I'll try. Thanks.

    Dr. Martin, Your videos showed up on you tube. Maybe because I watch an exercise channel? I am a senior and want to have good posture when I walk. I enjoy walking outdoors for exercise. Your recent video about not tilting forward when walking up hill and to try to keep my head "floating" is helping me. My back is not sore after walking. Thank you.

    Your video popped up for me. What I'm having issues with is when stairs are wide, like the ones you were demonstrating on. I have so much trouble lifting myself to the next step. On regular stairs, I do ok.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These type of steps are not great for walking because you have to over stride going up and down. But the key is pushing off the rear leg until your weight is all the way over the forward leg. Only then do you push with the forward hip. Check out some of my strait climbing videos where I detail the whole technique.

      I bet you right.
      I'm working out, I'm doing yoga, flexibility classes, and many other fitness classes. It's always step by step instructions with things that you should FEEL in the muscles by doing it, specific alignment instructions like align the foot in a vertical line with your other foots arch, or guided imagery instructions like "imagine you are squeezing on a ball" or "imagine you twist your foot inwards and notice this and that muscles twitch"... But to implement explained movement theory to everyday practice by your own, it feels very high level to me.

    Tq..I feel I hardly to stable the glute and core like squeezing my bud huhuhu...when walking.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The glute medius on the side of the butt will naturally need to work to keep the pelvis from tilting sideways. That is the flute we feel contracting when standing on one leg.

    Hi Todd, thanks a lot for this channel and all your help in making these videos for self-correction of walking posture. Are there any videos which help to correct a transversely rotated pelvis? Like say if the left side of the hip bone is more forward and rotated towards the right, causing balance issues while walking and taking turns? It makes walking in a straight line and turning around corners reaaally difficult and needs lots of conscious control over the body😢

    • @ToddMartinMD

      I would check out my Balance and Core Mobility Routine video for some functional exercise. Otherwise, all the videos are targeted to help you learn how to move correctly, and that can help with imbalances.
