  • Volcano the Blast Coaster was a one-of-a-kind. This was an Intamin launch coaster through a volcano. The ride opened with multiple records including the fastest invert and tallest inversion. The ride unfortunately closed after the 2018 season, but it will forever be remembered as one of the park's best attractions. This video covers the reasons for the coaster's removal and the on-ride experience.

I'll never forget my front row night ride on this in 2017. Still one of my favorite coaster experiences. This was also my first intamin AND my first launch coaster! Even after riding rides likes montu and raptor, this is still my favorite inverted coaster I've done.

The defunct ride I miss the most. I was just thinking about Volcano yesterday. It was an iconic structure at kings dominion. KD hasn’t been the same since.
I think they’ll heavily theme the wing coaster to make up for this loss.

We only got to ride this in 2001, and we loved it, but mostly because of the way it launched you out of the top. We still loved the barrel rolls though, and they remain one of my favourite type of inversions. I tell you, I feel very privileged to have experienced the 1-2 punch of Hypersonic XLC and Volcano on the same day! BTW Mike, so close to 40k subs, another milestone! Almost there, congrats!

This is my mom’s favorite coaster ever. She got really desperate to ride it one more time when it was having extensive downtime later in its life. We literally drove 8 hours back to KD in the same year we took a visit after we heard it was back open. And yes, we all had the credit already, she loved it that much. Looking back, that back-row rain ride is one of those rare coaster laps I’ll never forget. Months later, they announced its removal.

I rode Volcano a lot over the years, including the first year with half the seats. I probably waited two hours+. I really liked it, but I was disappointed by the drop back into the volcano. Without knowing the layout, I thought there was going to be more with all the speed built up. I thought the heart line rows became repetitive and you had to make sure your keys were secured because they were taken so slow.

I love Volcano. I remember watching testing in August 1998 with the 8-passenger trains. Volcano had intermittent closures after it opened that month. I first rode in March 1999. The experience was bizarre and incredible.
I'd credit Superman @ SFMM for Intamin's first launch coaster, but it was essentially their first full-scale LIM coaster, although Linear Gale opened a month earlier.
I'm pretty sure the second launch was there from day 1, but I can't say that with 100% certainty. I'm also not sure the ride was themed after the Volcano film, which was released by 20th Century Fox. Who knows.
I remember the coaster opened with three trains and later ran with only two after the changes you mentioned.
I like that Intamin replicated the heartline rolls as design elements in future coasters, such as the multi-inversion coasters.
I'm glad I had the chance to ride Volcano several times over the years, and I was also devastated when its closure was announced!

I rode it back in 2005, along with Hypersonic. It was a fun ride but it always looked like an eyesore to me. It looked like the mountain was surrounded by scaffolding.
I also never understood why they chose those colours for the ride. Yellow track with purple supports. I feel like the track should have been red like lava and supports the colour of the mountain.
I remember hearing a rumour that Canada's Wonderland was going to get their own version of Volcano in the late 90's. I am guessing they did not want to add it because of the issues Volcano had. I was actually relieved because I was worried that it would ruin the appearance of Wonder Mountain.

The hanging position also improved the launch. Back row gave good hang through the rollout esp. when heavily loaded. Front was even better lightly loaded -- solo rides reached 75 MPH, very rough and crazy, and hitting that awesome first turn way harder. As a local spent many late nights hitting Volcano up last for the short lines, maybe more (rerides were extra weird back in the dual station days, they had to check restraints both positions). 3 hours for the first ride.
My view was that it wasn't the best, but always a perfect finale.

I was only able to have ridden it twice (04 & 09). The 04 ride was first thing on a very cool morning in March and the ride had next to no punch as it seemed to barley make it through each element. But my ride in 09 was amazing and I saw how powerful and fun this ride could be.

Wait, this thing was theamed to a movie? First I've heard of it and I'm the one that named an actual volcano in Oregon "Mt Intamin", in honour of this ride (couldn't find its true name so I went into the coaster nerd well).
As for the ride itself my experience is a hard knock of the lesson "if you have the opportunity to go to a park, GO!". Shortly after Twisted Timbers was announced I had a chance to go. I instead chose to wait a year because both Twisted Timbers AND Coaster Con. As a result, it will forever be in the "seen but not ridden" category, which is sad for a coaster that isn't just as much a product of my urbex hobby as it is my coaster hobby (Nightmare at Joyland, Cyclone at Williams Grove, I guess you could technically put Fairyland Wildcat there since I saw the footers and some of the structural steel) to end up on (T3 is also on that list, and I'm dissapointed about that one for different reasons. Notably, I'm the "um, ow" kid from the "what did you think of T3" meme, which was actually shot at Kennywood). And I didn't even get to climb around it the way I climbed around Nightmare, Cyclone, and Wildcat.
