One of my top 3 cities in the world. Been there 2 times already this year, and going back again next month! It’s addicting! People are SO FRIENDLY!!! Love u Belfast!
One word of warning tourists. This video contains scenes of people in short sleeves, drinking under the stars in the evening. Please note that temperatures you, as a tourist may regard as winter are considered high summer in Northern Ireland and it is not uncommon for us locals to have barbecues on cloudy days with temperatures barely reaching 15 celcius. I am not kidding. That's why the Romans called this little island Hibernia, as in hibernate. So bring a coat and you'll be fine.
funny thing is, when I was a teenager I was still allowed into Pubs. Every year we'd go up to Donegal and my parents would have a pint whilst I sat with my sister and drank some coke and played pool
Mohamad Shahril I'm frm Malaysia and Belfast is generally safe but some people may be a slightly racist. There are quite alot of drunk people or people on the influence of drugs. just avoid any trouble
For all the patriotic yahoos BTL: the NYT is trying to make it easy for American tourists to 'do' Ireland and, yes, Belfast is in Ireland (the island, that is). So, if they had 'Belfast, UK' many viewers would immediately start thinking.....London....Manchester....Edinburgh.
Isn't it 'Northern Ireland', NYT? Or is that how the locals say it. This channel doesn't seem to be run by the brightest bulbs so i'm thinking it's a mistake.
Ireland is an island that is divided into two countries, The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Ireland is not a country. So it's not a mistake, Belfast is part of Ireland :)
Presumably geography isn't the New York Times' strongest subject. Whether you personally feel that Belfast is a part of Ireland, or Eire, or the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or just Northern Ireland... it's poor to see a main newspaper call it Belfast, Ireland. By any defination (UN, WTO, EU etc.) .. Belfast isn't in Ireland. It really isn't rocket science.
+celticdemon23 You could say it is situated in the British Isles, you could say it's located on the Island of Ireland, some people would say Eire. It is obviously a very contentious point to a lot of people.. with a name like celticdemon and a free gaza avatar I'm pretty sure how you would define it. It is poor for a main paper to say Belfast, Ireland. It will be construed by most that Belfast is in the Republic of Ireland, which of course it isn't. Many in the US don't realise that Ireland was never a united country, apart from under British rule. Belfast (Béal Feirste) was a part of the Kingdom of Ulster. Most Americans also don't realise that most people in Belfast are British and wish to remain part of the United Kingdom. I've had many great times in Belfast with both sides of the community. I love the place. Belfast, Ireland though is poor and lazy to see from a major publication.
A pretty fair point although to say Ireland was never united except under British Rule is Totally erroneous, Ireland was united UNTIL British Rule. Also The assertion that the majority of people in Belfast are British is also wrong. Last census results show that, Majority is split between identifying as Irish or Northern Irish, it was quite a low percentage who identified as British. Also Belfast City Hall now has a nationalist majority. Im born and raised in Belfast, I'v an Irish Passport. Belfast Is in the north East of Ireland. Politics and semantics wont change that fact. Belfast is no more British than any of the other British Colonised towns and cities across a third of the globe were.
+celticdemon23 stop denying reality its a British city because like it or lump it is in part of the United Kingdom , i dont care is you have a dutch passport , fact is if you are born in Northern Ireland legally from a nationality stand point you are British in terms of citizenship and dont tell me am wrong i worked in the civil service and i know am right, the option is there for anyone born on the island of Ireland to have a Irish passport, but legally up until you claim an Irish passport if born in Northern Ireland as part of the UK you are British in citizenship terms
+Andy Smith There's only one Belfast in Ireland. I'm curious as to how you've never heard of it. Maybe all that Buckfast and banging on that big bass drum have damaged your brain.
+STEVIEBOY maybe lets just remember that people have different thoughts so people from ny go give one care about what it is even though it's in Ireland. It's A POLITICAL BORDER not a country one
Thepr0df4ther Of course its Belfast Ireland.the most northern part of the island is Donegal .northern ireland is just a puppet state propped up by the english taxpayers for now.and its days are numbered.the tax payers in the rest of Ireland dont want it either.but its just a matter of time until it will be in a united Ireland.
You clearly aren't very intelligent, huh? Belfast is actually on the island of IRELAND (assuming you didn't know that already - though it's literally in the name... Northern IRELAND). Please don't confuse people.
@@youknowit7762 i think i know its on the geographical island of ireland (which is a geographical name) but still does not change the fact that the Irish state in its constitution is called Eire/Ireland (26 counties) and Northern Ireland is not part of the Irish state it is part of the UK
Belfast is on the island of Ireland. In Northern Ireland, which is still part of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. If they meant the republic of Ireland they would have mentioned it.
Most people that are not from there say "Ireland", they don't want to be rude but just lump it together because it is on the island of "Ireland" (which most people know is divided because of war and conflict). However I can imagine a tourist video does not want to remind people of all the conflict and it sounds friendlier with just "Ireland". Even a teacher I know who should know correctly that is traveling to the north just said Ireland. No disrespect, I love all the people regardless of heritage in the North and wish only peace and prosperity to them! Deserve it after all those horrible decades and loss of life.
It really surprises me how a shitty town like Belfast can be filmed like this. I'd been there for a couple of days not a bit of it was as exciting as shown in this vid.
@Thomas Mc Loughlin no its in the UK, can you not accept fact go read the good friday agreement which states NI is part of the UK British money British laws "Ireland" is the Republic of Ireland........................
Chris Kelly I don't want an argument with anyone. I accept that NI is completely different to Ireland as I have visited there and I was amazed at how different we really are on this small island. I don't want a hard border with NI as it will be very silly and I'm sure you don't either. I'm from the South and many people are afraid of what's coming down the track with your Prime Minister keep her cards so close to herself.
UlsterGroundhopper Yeah, but if they're going present the Belfast shipyard as a tourist attraction then they should mention the two things that it's infamous for, the Titanic and the anti Catholic sectarianism that prevailed until the miserable place closed.
hoopenhanger And in presenting Belfast itself do they say 'oh yes the IRA murdered hundreds of people here. It's a tourist video not a documentary on the troubles.
UlsterGroundhopper One of the biggest tourist attractions in the northeast is the tours around west Belfast and the part this area played during the conflict. More foreigners associate Belfast with Bobby Sands and the IRA than they do with that miserable failed shipyard. This is a fact.
Northern Ireland is many things but racist is not what Northern Ireland is. I am saddened to see your comment. However, there are thieves everywhere you go so I would not let that stop anybody from coming here.

Seems like a lot of people commenting on here have never been to the likes of Singapore, Sydney KL New York etc this place is as boring and BACKWARDS as it gets !!!!!!!
I recommend going to a place called Sydenham, where they have a great airport, and asking them to take you almost anywhere but this depressing, backward, dirty, mess of a country. Trust me, you won't regret it. Or head South, where the nice parts of Ireland reside. Belfast is the home to our Assembly, lead by a man, who is trying to pass into law the right for businesses to discriminate against Gay people on religious grounds. Belfast, where racism and homophobia are never out of fashion.
kooky216 I love my countrymen, I just hate our society. I used to escape regularly but my kids have roots here. If all the reasonable people leave, then what?

Big Fish is near the docks and ask anyone and they'll tell you how to get to the ship yards. Hardly anyone I've talked to in Belfast have been rude or unwelcoming.
Yes, Dublin is far bigger and is a fantastic place, but Belfast is well worth a visit. If anyone is in Dublin for any length of time, then Belfast is a worthwhile visit , even for a day trip, by train.

It sucks. Don't come to this hole.
Andrew98 The weather sucks but it's quite a nice place to visit
Marquez23 please elaborate why it “sucks” should I visit Dublin instead?
Belfast is beautiful! Rockets and moon cats are everywhere but the city is amazing for food, music, local pubs and the history is ancient.
Belfast, Northern Ireland.
