Paul, thanks for these as always. Is there any way to have this technique build a look ahead? Instead of having to press Enter, I'd like Captivate to test against an advanced action with every key press.
You could combine what I teach in this lesson with a loop triggered by the slide exit that every second or so runs the advanced action to update the answer. I've not done it but I can visualize how you would do it. You can always hire me to give you a lesson on how to do it. bit.ly/Cp1on1
Hi Paul: I may be at a similar impasse as shown below. I am building a software simulation where I need participants to enter an exact string of text on a single line, however, there is no submit button on the actual field. I have the variable set up. along with the conditions (IF [variable] CONTAINS Word1 AND Word2....AND Word5 THEN Show SuccessShape1 ELSE ShowFailShape1) SuccessShape1 is a group that includes a button that takes the user to the next page. Where I'm stuck is on how to trigger the validation of the text. I tried the Enter shortcut, but that didn't seem to help.
If Captivate had event listeners that users could access this situation would be different. You need something to trigger the advanced action, whether that be clicking on the next field (imagine hidden submit button) or using a keyboard shortcut, etc.
To capture data from an Adobe Captivate project you need to include it in the quiz, like as in a short answer question. How this happens in Moodle I'm unsure (not an LMS person).
Quick question, if I wanted to give the learner an opportunity to try again in case they missed one, do I write in the advance action, under check, under else, another action to try again?
Hi Paul, about to lose my marbles over this. I have an interaction similar to what you have set up here. I have a slide I’m using as a progress check with three text entry boxes and a custom submit button on the slide. I set up the advanced action as you did here with Any conditions true and the variant spellings of the expected answer. My action increments a variable by 1. I have one tab per blank. I have a 4th tab which checks whether that variable is equal to 3. If yes, success message, if no fail message. The slide operates as expected as long as there is anything typed into the 3 entry boxes. The thing I can’t figure out is if the student leaves the boxes blank and hits submit, the action increments the variable and shows success. Would appreciate your thoughts if you have time. Thank you!
You will need another decision tab to check if the value of your text entry boxes is null. If so you need to display an incomplete message with instructions to fill in some values in the TEB. If you still need help with this, you can purchase an hour from my website for one-on-one instruction: bit.ly/Cp1on1
Hi Paul, another question, do you know if I can evaluate a group of two words? For example, the answer i want is "design thinking" . Do I need to to anything about the space between the words?
Just add all the variations but remember this interaction should only be used for knowledge checks and not final questions. You will have arguments with learners who typed in their answer with poor spelling or used two spaces instead of one and these folks will be incorrect.
Hi Paul, I want to be able to evaluate text input as soon as the user finishes the input. I am creating number sequences for grade 6 learners which require them to complete a sequence by filling in the remaining 3 sequences each time. I was hoping to be able to do this by showing the entry as either red(wrong) or green(correct) as soon as the user starts on the next field. Sort of like "onFocus". Can you give me an idea of how that can be possible, please?
Generally speaking, you would need to write an advanced action that runs in a loop constantly check the value of the variables you are inputting to. If they are successful you could change the state of perhaps a highlight box behind the text entry box to turn it red or green depending on what the user input. If you still need help with this, you can purchase an hour from my website for one-on-one instruction: bit.ly/Cp1on1
@@CaptivateTeacher Is it possible to use the text input box variable (with a value) to change the color of the text input when it is correct? What will an hour cost?
So, if you make multiple text entry boxes, it creates multiple submit buttons corresponding to the number of text boxes. Can you merge all those buttons at once so that you can submit all at once? I am doing this because default fill in the blank quiz option doesn't give partial credit for students. Thanks for the video Paul, your videos are always helpful!
You can create your own submit button for this scenario that includes an advanced action that can check the value of all your text entry boxes. Then display a unique message depending on if they were correct, incorrect, or only partially correct. I like to also include an incomplete situation as well for those that have not entered any answer. Hope that helps. If you still need help with this you can purchase an hour of time from my website for one-on-one instruction: bit.ly/Cp1on1 Once you've made a purchase, you will receive a link to select a day and time on my schedule to book your session. I presently use Microsoft Teams for my online meetings but I am okay with using whatever web conferencing tool you prefer.
Hi Paul, Im trying to configure my text entry box activity to have 3 tries attemptives, but after I check the first entry, it seens the next words I type are not being evaluated...and the feeback message is not showing...do you know If can do anything different for this to work?
Hello Paul. I am hitting a wall. I usually can solve most problems but for some reason I cannot this one. I have set the variables and advanced actions just as you have with the exception I only use 2 answers instead of 5. I did this to simplify and ensure I could get it to work first. However when I test it by clucking the submit button I do not get any reaction at all. I have deleted the text box and started over. I have triple checked to make sure I have everything like you and still I cannot get this slide to work. Any suggestions would be awesome! Thank you.
Perhaps try recreating exactly what I'm doing in the video instead of transposing it to something else. At least for right now. If you still have trouble with this, you can purchase some one-on-one time with me, and I can review it with you. bit.ly/Cp1on1
What I've often done is add two hidden Next buttons. One for correct and one for incorrect. Assign points to the correct one and show that when they get it correct. Show the incorrect without any point if they get it wrong. Needs some advanced actions but it can be done.
The short answer is that you would need to track the number of attempts in a separate variable and rewrite the advanced action to accommodate multiple tries.
HELP HELP PLEASE! My company recently bought Captivate to build elearning classes for our staff. I’m almost done with my project, but I’m having issues with 2 slides: the two slides have the “tabs” learning interaction. I have the learning interactions set to play for the full slide, but when I hit play, only the next and back buttons show, not the learning interaction.. Can you please explain what I am doing wrong? I also refreshed my widget but it didn’t make a difference. Do I have to do something with my timeline?
Marie Gartley, if you are still having problems you can purchase time for one-on-one instruction: captivateteacher.com/how-i-can-help/1on1-training Once you've made a purchase, I'll reach out to arrange a time that is suitable for a web conference session.
@@mariegartley164 Captivate is software that does a great many things. Some people use it for software simulation, others use it for interactive videos and so on. The advantage of my one-on-one sessions is that unlike enrolling in an online course for 20 or 30 people, I can target your lesson on specifically what you need to learn. When you make a purchase, you will have an opportunity to let me know any further details that can help us create an ideal lesson for you. I'll ask that you follow the link to see current pricing. If I decide to change my price, I don't want this comment to mislead folks in the future. You can purchase time in increments of 1 hour that can be used in 15-minute increments. In other words, you can book an hour, but if you only use 30 minutes, you can schedule another session for 30 minutes in the future. Once you make a purchase, you will have access to my calendar to schedule a suitable time for both of us (I'm in Eastern North American Time). I use MS Teams to conduct web conferencing where we can communicate, and we both will have the ability to share our screens so I can see what you're dealing with, but I can also show you procedures on my screen. When we conduct our session, remind me to record the session to send you the video once the session is complete. This is useful if you wish to review the procedures taught during our sessions.
Yes, you could do this at least one way I can think of, but I would hesitate against doing so. If a student ends up using a synonym for one of the correct answers, you might spend more time having debates with your learners over their grades. If you design eLearning for hundreds or even thousands of people, this could be very problematic. Personally, this isn't how I want to spend my time.
