One winter in the 1990s my wife and I were in London: whatever we were meant to be doing, it ended up as a survey of the behaviour of the squirrels of the London parks. In Regent's Park we met a classic squirrel: eat one peanut, then take the next and bury it in a flower bed; repeat until the humans leave. In Kew Gardens, a squirrel came up and put its weightless cold feet on our fingers; we gave it a peanut, and it stayed, explaining that it was a two-nut squirrel, and when we gave it another nut, it pouched the two in opposite cheeks and ran off. In Hyde Park they were all over the place: a woman was feeding some, but the others ran up her coat and into the pocket where the nuts were (we also saw a strikingly elegantly turned-out Chinese woman teaching her daughter to feed birds--seed on palm of hand, extend arm to full extent, and wait in quiet stillness--London is great for unexpected moments like that). In St James's Park (? apostrophe in that toponym), in the morning I swear the squirrels were striking poses for photographs, but we came back in the afternoon and no squirrels--evidently they do so well in that part of town they only have to work mornings. In Greenwich, just behind the Maritime Museum, a squirrel climbed up a wall and saw us. It must have done the squirrel equivalent of shouting "PARTY!!" because we were soon pursued by an unruly mob.
Thanks for all the videos, and have a wonderful 2023.

It’s no accident that Tokyo is a phonetic anagram of Kyoto, since the 2 kanji for Tokyo (東京) mean east capital, the successor to Kyoto (京都) with these 2 kanji meaning capital metropolis. Tokyo was a contrived name to keep the phonetic sounds of the Kyoto name in the name of the new capital, even though one of the kanji is a homonym.

About 25 years ago, I was in the area and saw a crowd gathering at the Kensington High Street entrance to Holland Park, with police also in attendance. There used to be an adventure playground there, and the Commonwealth Institute, now both gone. The ruins of Holland Park House are used as an open air theatre. As a youngster me and my friends used to play on the stage, we pretended we were putting on our own play. It's a beautiful park, so many happy memories, thank you Jago for this video. The roof was made of copper, so around when I was born, it was a glowing copper-bronze colour, but then gradually changed to green and then I fancy finally black (or was it the other way round) - anyway the point is it gradually got attacked by first the Nitreous Oxide, and then the oxygen, and thus was in a constant state of chemical flux - unlike the exhibition inside - which never seemed to change much - although again that may just be my memory.

I agree. In the 1960's I attended a small school just off Kensington High Street - called Allendale run by the gloriously eccentric Miss Jenkins & Miss Todd. They used to take us to the park almost daily, walking in a crocodile up Allen Street and along the High Street. In fact there is now a bench to the memory of the late Miss Jenkins on the terrace just outside the Orangery.

What a lovely place to end the year. For me it is also the scene of some of my very earliest memories dating from around 1960 or 61... although as you explained the addition of the Japanese gardens is more recent. Back in my day it was a muddy woodland, leading to a ramshackle adventure playgound that I was always far too scared to use. Strangly however the Peacocks are an original feature from those earlier days, and I have photos of a very young, and slightly anxious, me being chased by one in the early 60's. I don't recall the Squirels ever being that friendly however, so I expect that was just for you - for some reason they must have liked you! Anyway - Happy New year indeed Jago.

Talking about squirrels, in my previous home, they seem to have figured out a way to get into the attic. I had an unwanted family and the noise they made chewing up the insulation for nesting was so deafening that I had to sleep downstairs. Eventually, I got the exterminators in and a few well-aimed air gun pellets did the trick.
However, all my neighbors then started getting squirrels in the attics as well. The fact that all our houses were constructed in exactly the same way probably did not help, but I always wondered if the squirrels were organising some kind of secret night school to pass on the savoir-faire of breaking into attics..

When I was a kid, back in the 60s, Holland Park had a great Adventure Playground, which essentially we could construct ourselves using found timber, rope, tyres, old cars, nails, saws, hammers etc. I seem to remember we could also have fires. Happy days.
Later the park got over-run with rabbits, people had rabbits as pets back then, then discovered they didn't make good pets after all, and released them in the park. Presumably someone then made them into pies?
Anyhoo, interesting to see squirrels have now taken over from rabbits. Like the parakeets in Kensington Gardens?

Regarding Kyoto and Tokyo, "kyō" means "capital" in this sense. Kyōto means "capital city", and Tōkyō (also known as Tōkyō-to, "Tokyo Metropolis") means "eastern capital". Note the difference between "tō" and "to". The "ō" is a long vowel, sometimes written as "ou".
(Disclaimer: I know very little about Japanese, but I have a certain knack for languages.)
Interestingly, Beijing means "northern capital", and the character for "capital" is essentially the same in both Mandarin and Japanese.

Once you escape the attack squirrels, have you ever considered doing a film on the other castles in the London area, such a the long gone Baynard's Castle?

Do we now have a reason for a certain government official going to Barnard's Castle during lockdown? He was supposed to be looking for Baynard's Castle but owing to lack of eye tests misread the name?

Was there in September. Met a sad looking peacock, plenty of squirrels and a lovely just wed couple getting photos taken. Also decided to walk back to Paddington and spy the little fairy tree thing at a different park en route (while also getting chased by a wasp).

That was amazing. Definitely a place to go if you need a bit of tranquil 'quiet time'. We have a much smaller 'Japanese Garden' in the college I work for and it is also a lovely place to chill. Happy New Year to you too, Jago, and I look forward to 2023 and more of your videos.

Hey! I was just in London a couple of weeks ago and, inspired by this video, decided to pay a visit to Holland Park. And it's just as nice as you see here. What a great find. Also, there's a Daunt Books shop right near the tube station!

    Jago,
Those cute little squirrels are actually North American Tree Rats. Cuddle that and you'll never hold a trainspotting pencil again!
On a sidenote, when did the Commonwealth Institute meet its Waterloo? I used to go there when I was a kid for to see some of the exhibitions. It reminds me of other places that are no more. I remember the London Transport museum being at Syon Park. I believe that also has moved elsewhere. We also used to regularly drive past a building that housed part of the NRM which I believe was in Clapham but the memory is a bit jaded these days.
It would be interesting to see something about how the LT Museum ended up where it is and how its monumental collection was started. Happy New Year to you and here's to looking forward to the many other videos I'm sure you have squirreled away.

The commonwealth Institute has now been replaced by the design museum.
The LT museum is in Covent Gardens in Central London. I went there recently and there is alot yo see and do. Due to restriction on time, we ended up going during half term hols and the place was amok with children, so whoever is planning to go, choose your time wisely!
      But it's a fantastic museum.

      @iankemp1131 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@maryapatterson Plus there is the LT Museum Depot in Acton (old Lillie Bridge depot) which is also well worth a visit but needs pre-booking on an open day. Huge range of exhibits which wouldn't fit into Covent Garden.

I used to live next door and this was a favourite. I have since moved away from London, but come back sometime and the Kyoto is on my list of things to do. Last time I went I was disapointed to see some of the water fountains damaged. I hope they were fixed by the time you went.

A nice change, thanks for sharing! The persistent squirrel reminds me of my dad trying to feed a nut to a squirrel in Greenwich Park and get photographed. The stranger struggled with Dad's camera, the squirrel got impatient and bit the nut and Dad's thumb, and a jet of blood spurted out. Life lesson; sweet furry creatures are not always as docile as they look. "Nature, red in tooth and claw ..." I hope you escaped more lightly Jago, although the squirrel seemed determined that you were a tree.

Another garden worth a look is the walled garden at sunbury on thames ( served nearby by red TFL buses with the river nearby for boating adventures, vids or the ferry to hurst park - when working - and a walk back to Hampton Court/East Molesey and if feeling like walking more the Model Engineers minature rail system off Portsmouth Road at Thames Ditton. (no red bus so walk to Kingston or Long Ditton/Surbiton for red bus home or chance the half hourly SWR service
