This is the song that turned me on to Genesis. The summer when I turned 17 my family was on vacation in San Fransisco and I was in a record store and they were playing this album. As soon as I heard that infectious slamming groove after Peter sings "Dancing out with the moonlit knight/ knights of the green shield stamp and shout" I was hooked. I went up to the record guy and was like "what is this man?" He says Genesis. I bought the album right then and there. When I got home I played this album a lot. I thought my God how could a band be this good? Lee you're exactly right about how they all just play perfectly off of each other in sync and it just sounds so good. Amen brother. This track really shows each member at their best. They come together so well it's sublime. Every instrument is doing amazingly pleasant things and Peter's vocals just shine. In fact, Peter Gabriel mostly wrote this song : he wrote a series of "riffs" on the piano which make up the main melody and then wrote these insanely good lyrics. And then Tony and Steve and Mike and Phil wrote these insane instrumental poems within the song. Phil Collins is an amazingly tasteful and proficient drummer. Thank you for doing this Lee. I know it's like over a year late, and I've been watching your channel for months now, but for some reason TH-cam didn't show me this early Genesis stuff, and I've even searched your videos looking for various things and never saw these Genesis songs until just the other day. The sung intro is full of nostalgia for a bygone time, 'Can you tell me where my country lies... it lies with me cried the queen of maybe, for her merchandise she traded in his prize' there's the f'ing sell out right there. The album has some politics too, for its time, an American won't get the cultural references hidden in Pete's writing. Phil Collins' drumming is SO orchestral on this song! I'm guessing he wrote charts for that because, my gosh, it was so perfectly played! Plus, Steve Hackett's guitar work is so innovative and red hot! Great tapping work, well before Eddie Van Halen came along! Great, classic Prog Rock!
Peter’s a capella is such a ballsy way to start an album! Their most British album ever and such a gem. Every band member is on his a-game. You should definitely listen to ‘Lillywhite Lilly/The Waiting Room’ from The Lamd Lies Down on Broadway; the whole band just goes nuts.
Once or twice a year I always return to seventies Genesis. In this song the drummer is holding it together nog mather what. Phil Collins was huge in the eighties as a solo artist but in fact is often overseen as a tremendous and innovative drummer. And yeah your right, this music is nostalgic in every way. The full Genesis albums are perfect escapes from modern realities. Especially at rainy sunday mornings. Their catalogue is a fantastic milestone in prog and beyond.

Just after the 1st track on "The Lamb' play the guitar part full up on the best stereo system you can then wait for the fly to hit! f'ing great dynamics
Early Genesis albums were not well engineered, but The Lamb is a sonic masterpiece with contributions from Brian Eno. My pick for best concept album ever.
@@L33Reacts There are solid Arguments with Reviewing Lamb, either off of Spotify, or reviewing it via the Bardem (sp) Video Illustration of all Lamb. Nick n' Lex, (also Musicians) were at first, prior to reviewing it, conceptually against the Later, but quickly were deeply appreciative of reviewing the Illustrative Version of Lamb.
He was so good dude. I mean goddamn some of his fills and transitions are so good. I guess his career after this has cast a shadow on people knowing his drumming ability
Bill Bruford played with Phil Collins and Genesis during their 1976 tour... Their drumming together was quite stunning... Only one tour... then Chester Thompson took over tour duties to play with Phil. Collins is one of the truly great drummers. He's played jazz (Brand X), prog (Genesis), heavy (played with Led Zeppelin for Live Aid show) and funk (Earth, Wind & Fire horns)... Pop (later Genesis, and the lead singer of Abba, Frida).. and avant garde (Peter Gabriel's 3rd album... which was ground-breaking). The Lamb would be a GREAT listen for you... One of the all-time great albums.
Mike Rutherford on Bass Guitar / 12 string double neck played Moog bass pedals while nailing that strum rhythm on the 12 string, you can hear the bass guitar come in later in the track. I remember my chest resonating/vibrating to the deepest of deep bass notes from the bass synth pedals when I saw them live.
Mike Rutherford is one of the most under-rated bass players. I love his 12-string guitar and how it fills so many spaces in the music. His contributions to Genesis were foundational.
Bill Bruford played with Genesis! YES, yes he did! He toured with them after Gabriel left and Phil started singing. Bill and Phil played together with Brand X, so when they were looking for a drummer Bill volunteered. It was great but Bill decided it was not the direction he wanted to go. Phil by that time found Chester Thompson (who was with Weather Report at the time). Phil knew Chester's work from Frank Zappa (think 'Inca Roads'). Now 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' is ambitious. Phil drumming is fusion inspired. It is long, so many do the album in sections. Definitely do it, but maybe after a few more of their other great tunes. (now I need to go see what you have done so far) I'm back. You've hit some really great songs. So go ahead. But other must hears are: The Musical Box, Cinema Show, Dance on a Volcano, Squonk, (oh hell, the whole damned album is so good), Blood on the Rooftops, One for the Vine, Down and Out, ABACAB, Domino, Mama, No Son of Mine, Fading Lights for starters. LOL
Another song/experience that you wish you had been there in person was Pink Floyd’s Pulse Concert’s “Comfortably Numb”. Especially an audience before cell phones!
They were incredible from inception up to around 1977. Gotta listen to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Dance On A Volcano, Ripples, Los Endos, Blood On The Rooftops, and these three together as they are all part of same piece Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers/In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow. Basically there is too much to mention. Afterglow Live needs to be listened too as its epic. th-cam.com/video/2kfaA5XibQU/w-d-xo.html
Dude! Major props for doing this GEM! Going deep. Loving you!! And you just go incredibly philosophical due to listening to a Genesis song. Melting my heart over here! That was a rant I can get behind. You should def check out their album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway if you have not already. A most excellent ride to be sure!!! Horns up & Happy Friday!
dude thank you so much for watching! Genesis always gets me ranting about culture and society xD seriously though, each Genesis videos ends with this lmao. I am going to be doing "Lamb" very soon, i'm quite excited :D see you there!
If you like "frantic" drumming, try "Third Uncle" from an album called 801 Live. 19 year old Simon Phillips plays like the more often he hits something, the more he'll get paid!
Well, if you'd like to see Phil play live in 1979 (as I was lucky to, in a small club), I recommend Brand X. Brand X was a way for Phil to fully work his jazz chops, and it featured other amazing musicians like Percy Jones on fretless bass, and the late, lamented John Goodsall (guitar) and Morris Pert (percussion). Here's live video of 'And So to F...': th-cam.com/video/45KREhFGtRw/w-d-xo.html
It's so fun to see your reaction to masterful progressive rock - producers won't allow this type of music any longer. I'm old enough to have attended concerts of many off these masters. 🙏🫡👍♥️
Even though you didn't directly connect the two, your interesting little ramble at the end of the video actually has a lot to do with the theme of the song. That's why it becomes so frantic after the introductory parts. I believe that you may have tapped into that on a subconscious level.
Wow really? I had no idea… you are probably right. I understood what they were saying on a deeper level but consciously I didn’t connect them. This has happened more then a few times with other videos of mine as well. My spirit is very receptive ;)
The reaction to Britain joining what was then the European Economic Community in 1973. Loss of Sovereignty, loss of independence, loss of currency (the pound), and some very English references (Green Shield Stamps [knights of the Green Shield Stamp and shout], Father Thames, etc.) and arguments were recently reignited with Brexit. A wonderful snapshot of how us Brits tend to fuck ourselves over time and time again 😢😢😢😂 I was 3 when this was recorded and we still used the Green Shield Stamps as relics of food rationing following WW2. I’m now 53 of course, but I can vividly remember my mum using the stamps maybe in 75. This song is also reprised at the end of the album.
Thank you so much for the context. This album seems to be a cry for the england of old. The whole album has this green, glossy sheen on it that just reminds me of the meadows and wood of my homeland. But I am American. Ive always wanted to see my Saxon roots 😎
I wish more people would react to this one - it's such a special song. And yes, Phil's drumming is outstanding in its complexity but it fits perfectly for what's needed in the song. If you like music experimentation, then you'll love the Lamb album - it's a crazy story about a Puerto Rican in NYC that gets crazy into the metaphysical world in a way only the 70s could accomplish. My suggestions are not to get hung up too much on the lyrics and enjoy the ride - also, I suggest listening to the original audio and not the fan-made animated version that's out there on TH-cam because that can be very distracting on a first listen and it's not necessary at all. I've heard some TH-camrs also have copyright issues posting reactions to the album. If you haven't heard the song Dance on a Volcano, you really should - it's on the first album after Peter left and I think you will really like it. Beato also did a "what makes this song great" for this song and it's funny watching him try to count the time signature changes. Your society rants at the end are great btw 😁
😂😂😂😂 my Genesis videos always divulge into rants on our culture and society lol it just brings it out of me. It’s such good and thought provoking music then i just can’t help it 😂😂 I will be doing “lamb” soon… I just need to find the time you know
Speaking of The Lamb... Do recommend this short new consideration on it! (By prog drummer Andy Edwards, of e.g. Frost* and IQ) th-cam.com/video/ddHT2YqZ-xM/w-d-xo.html
I am doing another Yes video in a few days. I like to wait at least a week to do the same band again. You should see my old videos... same band for like a week straight. lame. xD
Genesis were the most overtly "English" of the great 70's prog bands, and none of their albums was more of a commentary on what it meant to be English than this one. Interestingly, their next album would be an exploration into the fantasy life of a New York Puerto Rican hoodlum!
This Song Is a masterpiece. The music of Genesis has the Power ti generate emoticons ;this means Is real art .I completely agree with L33'words .Humanity Is going too fast probably in the wrong direction .Better slow down.Excuse my english:I am from Italy.
Lee - are you looking for another brilliant British drummer ? Then look no further ! From the band , Jethro Tull , the incredible Barriemore Barlow . John Bonham said B.B. was the best drummer in England. The track I recommend is called Conundrum you'll find it on the JT album Bursting Out . This is a seriously impressive instrumental featuring one of the greatest drum solo's ever recorded .
Great reaction, and pretty typical from a guy your age listening to Prog from the zenith days of composition and experimentation, tho Genesis is quite cultured in their approach. For more intricate Phil Collins drumming you can’t go wrong with his side hustle from ‘75 onward (before his solo career) Brand X … if you thought the drumming in Moonlit Knight was insane, listen to this 👉🏻 th-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_mvlFrVwlQuDKM43_ZAqNjhfZ4jMkhugIQ.html&feature=shared
Well... I requested the full Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album from another reactor who did a 5h(!) video with extensive analysing and it was all blocked... It's something about that album... A bit pity that you started to take more focused notice of the drumming while one of my favourite guitar playing of all tine took place. I strongly recommend you to go back and listen (starting @2.24) with that guitar in focus 😊
I will take another listen my friend thank you for pointing it out :) I am trying to do “lamb” it’s just a lot of recording and I have to find the time to do the whole thing lol
Love, love you reaction and commentary to this Genesis track. I personally would pause on the Lamb, as it is a deep Genesis cut. Genesis at their most creative, but too wordy for me, as Peter wrote all the lyrics as a concept album. The songs therefore only make sense when listened to in order. The lamb is something I would listen too when you have explored more of their more accessible back catalog first.
Thank you so much! I appreciate it. This was a fun one for sure. I enjoyed every second of it. seems to be a theme with Genesis videos…. I guess I am a fan :)
There were MANY great drummers back then.. The 70's had a higher standard for music than today. If you weren't this great then you did not sell albums. We were picky. Today a lot of new music sounds like garage band music to me. The recording studios and mixing engineers were more skilled too. Who knew it would all go away someday?
Mi spiace moltissimo che Phil Collins ultimamente stia male di salute. È stato un grande musicista e pure adesso nonostante non possa più suonare la batteria con la sua voce può ancora dare tanto.

Early Genesis albums were not well engineered, but The Lamb is a sonic masterpiece with contributions from Brian Eno. My pick for best concept album ever.
i am excited to check it out! i did some research this morning and wow... yeah i'm ready!
The lamb was amazing. There are many live recordings of it . The Lamia song is unreal
When Genesis were at their best. I was at college and Genesis my favourite.
When you listen to songs like this, you realize how underrated Phil Collins is as a drummer.
He was so good dude. I mean goddamn some of his fills and transitions are so good. I guess his career after this has cast a shadow on people knowing his drumming ability
At about this time, mid 70’s, Phil was as good as there ever was.
Phil was the fastest drummer ever. And best feel drummer
His contributions to Genesis were foundational.
a 12 string?? good god. i can only imagine the sounds you can get out of that beast....
@@mikemicrael5749 i will try and listen for the bass more next time so i can try and say something about it. thanks for saying something!
@@L33Reacts A 12 string guitar not a bass .
@@halcyon289 ? I know. That’s why I separated the comments lol
i love the key changes at 5:00.
This album is in my
Top 5 all time. And Steve tapping way before Edward.. wonderful shit, maybe do a whole album review ☀️🙏🏻❤
Collins also drummed with Brand X ' Nuclear Burn ' & ' Unorthodox Behavior ' he said Genesis became the money cow and Brand X was his passion
The original 5 man ensemble (?) of early Genesis was "OUTSTANDING " Some of the greatest Rock music ever produced, PERIOD !
I once heard someone call Mike Portnoy "baby Phil Collins", and I don't think that's an insult to either of them!
Hey, no problem. I really enjoy listening to you share your thoughts!
keep on with The musical box please! cheers
Will do, thank you! :D Cheers!
I agree!! Very impressive song
Phil Collins FINALLY won the Buddy Rich award. 🥁🥁🥁 Yes!!!!!
@@You-Deef Agreed!! His son too.
Might be wrong but I think Bill Bruford and Phil Collins played together during Genesis Seconds Out.
Yes, they did 😊
Saw them at the Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl 1978.
You still have the occasional chance to see this performed live by guitarist Steve Hackett. He’s back in the US this fall.
Cinema Show. Trust us. 🙂😎
Great reaction mate.genesis at there peak if you like Collins drums listen to nuclear burn by by brand x it will blow you away man
Great! Now have another listen and hone in on the guitar! ❤
🤣🎸🎸🎸🎸
Genesis reactors trying to figure out time signatures. Hahaha. You are not the first. You will not be the last.
It's so fun to see your reaction to masterful progressive rock - producers won't allow this type of music any longer. I'm old enough to have attended concerts of many off these masters. 🙏🫡👍♥️
You definitely have to listen to the lamb lies on Broadway, the full album. It will blow your mind out. You'll never regret!
Before he joined Rush, Neil Peart was a big fan of Genesis from around this time according to the man himself.
The Battle Of Epping Forest...
A wonderful snapshot of how us Brits tend to fuck ourselves over time and time again 😢😢😢😂
I was 3 when this was recorded and we still used the Green Shield Stamps as relics of food rationing following WW2.
You should try Dance On A Volcano, another insane Phil Collins drum performance from a couple albums later. Probably even more intense than this one.
🙏❤
Frost* and IQ)
th-cam.com/video/ddHT2YqZ-xM/w-d-xo.html
Dance on a Volcano and Los Endos also have that same frantic drumming style.
now its time to continue with YES its an order
You should listen to "Fireball" by Deep Purple.
phil was a great drummer
Give 'I know what I like' from that album a go. Collins created a pure hip-hop style lick. Way ahead.
I’ll add it to the list! Thank you 🙏
I was not a fan of them as a kid in the late 70s I was a Sabbath Rush Zep head I got in to them with Peter and am a fan for life now
they have a fan for life in me too as well now. just magnificent work. and i'm only a few songs in!
Phil released a lot of cheesy nonsense as a solo artist… but when he was drumming for Genesis there were few who could come close to what he did!
Test this song : Porcupine Tree - Mesmer 1 and Mesmer 2, am drummer too and this IS si CRAZYY just drum guitare and bass i love it
Try "Burning Rope" by Genesis - themed towards Carpe Diem, and a great song.
Great reaction, and pretty typical from a guy your age listening to Prog from the zenith days of composition and experimentation, tho Genesis is quite cultured in their approach.
For more intricate Phil Collins drumming you can’t go wrong with his side hustle from ‘75 onward (before his solo career) Brand X … if you thought the drumming in Moonlit Knight was insane, listen to this 👉🏻

@@L33Reacts If you're still doing the lamb - split it into parts. Some have succeeded that way.
Who knew it would all go away someday?
forget about
popstar Phil the singer. Drummer Phil is a God
Try LoveTeign O'er me by the Who
Get ready for this: the drummer is Phil Collins.
If you like crazy fast drumming you should listen to Incomudro hymn for atman by Kansas Phil Ehart goes crazy on drums
Ill add it to the list thank you David! And yes, I love me some fast drumming. it just tickles all the right spots for me lol
Mi spiace moltissimo che Phil Collins ultimamente stia male di salute. È stato un grande musicista e pure adesso nonostante non possa più suonare la batteria con la sua voce può ancora dare tanto.
This was one of my homework albums. Can't say why, but it was easy to concentrate while listening to this!
It has a soothing/hypnotic effect on me. Until they go crazy, then I’m all over the place 😂 but when it’s slow I’m almost hypnotized
There's something wrong with the world ? Well the answer was mentioned by you .
Jesus Christ is the way , the TRUTH , and the life .
Keith Moon?
