Rewatching many of these sessions as well as some I had previously overlooked, in 2020, and really miss the video/audio format and great guests . . . Hope they can eventually return to this great podcast!
Except when it comes to mentioning Steve or Karl, and this from a man who used to mention Karl unprompted in every interview he had and yes I'm still a fan but I find myself looking at him slightly different now and it actually says a lot more about his character than any previous 'stuff'
Another very interesting chat with Ricky. He has an amazing work ethic. It's obvious that he is feeling really ill but he'd still never cancel a gig or not turn up for the interview because of it.
It's 2024 and Ricky has a podcast in England. He is doing bits of what he talks about here. He is unique and fascinating to listen to. He has no guests but does comment on messages people send in. The Office, Extras, he is a super talented guy. All the best from Mark in Australia. I've watched all of yours too Kevin. 💎💎 two great comedians.
And just a last note Kevin, again it's 2024 and you are interviewed on George from Seinfeld's new podcast. How's that for the world 🌍 spinning round. 💎
"So you are saying that there won't be any rockbusters?" 😂 exactly why i won't tune in for a while. Still listening to Karl for the 5th time on the old xfm's

Love Ricky’s stories of real life…. @1:20:00 ish he reminded me of something that happened in front of me many years ago. I was in a que to board a train in Chester. There was a couple in front of me who looked somewhat disheveled, the guy stepped into the train first his partner then followed but then tripped and fell onto all fours, I went to help but suddenly had to stop and stand back as the woman proceeded to empty the entire contents of her bladder onto the floor of the train. Once finished her partner helped her up and they continued into the carriage. Taking a long singular stride I stepped over the large pool of piss and eventually found a seat. Added note - the woman was wearing a dress/skirt.
I'm afraid to watch because I'm sick of seeing interviews with Ricky in which he totally erases the fact that he wouldn't be sitting there without Steve Merchant.
Ricky Gervais completely whitewashed Stephen Merchant out of the Limo/Cheetos anecdote. It was Steve, not Jane, that wiped the dust off of Ricky's suit on the way to the Golden Globes. I know because I've listened to their XFM Show hundreds of times for years. I don't like to guess on their relationship nowadays, because it's not my business. But there is a very clear pattern when it comes to Ricky completely not acknowledging Steve when asked about their collaborative history. Specifically Steve, as Ricky is still happy to comment on Karl Pilkington.
Stephen doesn’t seem to mind. In fact he defends Ricky have u seen the Merchant RHLSTP interview? He gets furious when Richard Herring mildly insults Ricky. It makes me so sad that he never seems to mention Steven Merchant.

dave hageman oh, it does not fit in to either of these two generes so it must be shit. Sorry, I wasn't aware of these rules. Now when I know this I can see Derek is awful. Thank you.
You can tell he didn't like the rockbusters. The host is like that cringey stepdad trying to earn cool points by using the same inside jokes to a kid that he and his real dad share.

That's neat, that George Bernard Shaw quote at 47:45, "People don't stop playing 'cause they grow old, they grow old 'cause they stop playing." Even when misremembered, the rearrangement offers insight in the mistake: "People don't grow old 'cause they play, they play 'cause they don't grow old." In emphasizing the cause of the lack even, rather than the lack's result when dropping the "old," something even more useful, pertinent to our times, appears: "People don't stop growing 'cause they stop playing, they stop playing 'cause they stop growing." Distilled further: "People don't grow 'cause they stop playing, they stop playing 'cause they don't grow." Quite a guy, this Bernard Shaw, offering insight 70 years ahead of when it'd be most needed; many of his quotes apply directly to the restrictive culture we're dealing with now: "The power of accurate observation... is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." "Write your Sad times in Sand. Write your Good times in Stone." "Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance." Other favorites, critical of today's irrational, monolithic, self-absorbed, puritanical liberal thinking: "Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. The optimist invents the aeroplane, the pessimist the parachute." "The unconscious self is the real genius. Your breathing goes wrong the moment your conscious self meddles with it." "If you cannot get rid of a family skeleton, you may as well make it dance." "A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can depend on the support of Paul." "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." Even more illuminating: "This is the true joy in life: Being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy..." In an age where corruption and insustainability dominate our lives, our methods are oriented in a conceit repellent to progress or its possibility, an attitude expressly unfit and unhelpful in producing amicable change. Have never seen such prescience before, so many things that can help us understand and negotiate our present circumstances. Many more speak to the present straits facing our conservatives right now: "The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it." (That one applies as much to most of our liberal thinking these days, too, though.) A rarer gift, like that of Mark Twain's humorous social commentary: "No diet will remove all the fat from your body because the brain is entirely fat. Without a brain, you might look good, but all you could do is run for public office." This nugget of Bernard Shaw's perhaps illustrates best what it is I'm trying to say about the present orientation of the liberal approach: "A Native American elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time. When asked which dogs wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, The one I feed the most." We're presently too rigid in our general thinking, psychologically, culturally and politically, simply taking ourselves too seriously to be effective in anything we pursue. Growth cannot occur unless it comes from a rational and consensual place, and neither rationality nor consent can occur without a little humility-- the freedom to play and make mistakes, be forgiven them to make more, that we then can learn: tolerance. Prohibiting these last things, we end up with resentment, pessimism, resistance, irrationality, neuropathy, the need to be perfect, denial strategies, strategies of aggression, anti-pluralism and progress' miserable, 4-ton cousin: stagnation. Play, forgive, grow, repeat; that's the formula we've stopped using. End of tangential skyscraper of optimisms, of my insufferable musing. Can't believe you took the time to read all this, so thanks. Perhaps a necessary change in how we treat one another will result if the irrational take the time to look at Shaw's work, too; seems it would be very palatable and effective in that regard. 'Til the next pony ride, Cheers.
"im in a mansion, they're in a bin". Ah Ricky. It's a big shame to know that you would say that in character a few years ago, now you actually think like that.
i wonder if stand up became his favourite thing after he did a bunch of tv shows and movies that were forgettable at best. Or if it was a secret love all along
@@reinforcedpenisstem Where did you get the information that shows that they do? Either way, no one is making suppositions about his private life, but he sure edits him out publicly.
It was only after the fact that I realized Ricky engineered situations in which he appeared to be on the same level as great comedians. Talking Funny was the most obvious, but the sit-downs with Larry David, Garry Shandling and Christopher Guest were also a kind of artificial elevation to a place he doesn't really inhabit naturally on his own. By the time he and Steve Merchant parted ways (the truth of which is only apparent in Ricky's career revisionism, a canny bit of work that effectively paints Ricky as the sole creator of The Office and Extras), it was apparent that Ricky's abilities on his own were no more than the sum of their parts. And oddly, he seems to admit that his stand up is didactic, something that only works in the hands of a master.
whataloadofbollox umm he was in the Wolverine movie, had a HBO sitcom, successful stand up tour. Not a huge amount but hes done ok. Ricky did a shit sitcom, a shit movie, a decent Brent movie and a decent stand up tour. So they are about equal
I very much like Merchant and loved his Hello Ladies sitcom and was not putting him down, it was a direct response to someone who was putting Gervais down and saying he was nothing without Merchant !
Totally agree. Also he just keeps recycling bits from XFM. Bits that he didnt even came up with in the first place. Basically just robbing Stephen and Karl, without even acknowledging it.
It’s hilarious that when Steve was on the same show five years prior, he told the same Cheetos story. Why can’t anyone call out Ricky on his Steve erasure??
I think that Ricky and Steve fell out when Steve went off to do the Hello Ladies TV show. I think that Steve must have told Ricky that he shouldn't be involved because the show is about a single guy whose rubbish with women. Ricky hasn't had those experiences because he has been with his girlfriend Jane for years. I think then Ricky got Steve back by doing David Brent: Life in the Road without Steve. Ricky occasionally mentions Karl in some of his recent interviews, there's one interview where he is asked directly about Steve and he makes a joke and uses up time so they have to move on to another question (I think it was Rick at Oxford university QandA) It's a shame if this they have fallen out. Maybe it's to do with them having worked together for years and they just want to spend some time apart? Ps: Pleas subscribe to my channel. Cheers.
These interviews are great but what's the deal with the sidekicks? They aren't funny and they aren't interesting. I don't mean to be rude, but constructively this would be better, I think, without them.
I wish he stops banging on about aethism ...its boring and unfunny. His interviews nowadays seem to be defensive and how he's being attacked. HERE'S SOMETHING RADICAL..... GO BACK TO BEING FUNNY!!! It's a long way from the Office and XFM. Regards from a bloke from a bin who could not be arsed about religion.
exactly but i think he's actually an undercover freemason. And lying in order to woo unworthy people to hell. Thats his social engineering job in return for fame
Do you understand how utterly childish it is to believe in conspiracy theories? That this whole unknown world that only a few people "in the know" get to know about is utter horseshit designed to part you from your money? Because assholes like to make money off of people like you. They get advertisement revenue and book deals and touring revenue because the easily led will gladly hand over their cash to be brainwashed by people spouting nonsense. Brad Paisley is a freemason, so lets hear about how demonic he is. Oh, and the entire Mormon religion is based on Freemasonry. But I'm guessing you don't have a problem with them. Let's ignore the fact that an entire religion is based on fucking children. Anything their supposed prophet could get his dick into, at least. The same sort of stupidity that leads people to drink cold caffeine but not hot, think they're going to be the God of their own planet when they die, and get to have a bunch of boring broads as their eternal wives is the same sort of stupidity that leads people into believing in half-lizards and the illuminati. God is ashamed of all of you. He told me personally.
I wish people who don't like him would find better things to do with their time. I don't sit around and watch Rush Limbaugh videos and then bitch about it in the comment section. Here's something radical, just pay attention to people you like. Your life isn't long enough to pay attention to people you have an eternal problem with. If he used to be someone you approve of, and now he isn't, move the hell along.
Ricky really thinks highly of his "stand up" shows. His specials are incredibly mid at best. Not one of them has been great. He should watch Carlin before every interview and get humble. I love some of his stuff, but he has a long list of very poor material. All of his movies are unwatchable. He is no actor, never will be.
The part where he says "You live in a bin", thats you he's talking about. His hundreds of millions of dollars hes earned, from writing, producing, directing & acting, in the things he personally created, are proof your opinions are worthless.
@davebruneau6068 The good: Everything with Karl, Golden Globes, Extras. Movies: All shite, all terrible, all rated awful on every aggregate site by critics and the public. Extras ok, Life's Too Short great. All of the David Brent stuff sucks. Lol earnings, sounds like Ricky wrote that, or maybe Steve wrote it for him.. The thing where he plays the retard, he based that performance on watching you gush over his endless talents. Tell me about Hampstead again..it's so riveting

Totally agree. Also he just keeps recycling bits from XFM. Bits that he didnt even came up with in the first place. Basically just robbing Stephen and Karl, without even acknowledging it.
RG has a real love of animals. Why hasn't he went the David Attenborough route? Could easily add that kind of thing if he wanted.
People who opposed Trump should beg for forgiveness.
It’s hilarious that when Steve was on the same show five years prior, he told the same Cheetos story. Why can’t anyone call out Ricky on his Steve erasure??
I'm convinced not mentioning Steve is one of his stipulations before interviews.
@@sacredcoww I think you’re right
@@sacredcowwI'm way out of the loop, did they have a major falling out?
Cheers.
No one likes a comic that shoots down.... I mean what is the point?
more lipstick on jamie's teeth than lips this time. so distracting every time
?
Strange how he never mentioned Stephen Merchant.
Who is this chunky Samm stand-in? Wtf!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like Ricky has a case of misophonia. i can identify.
How does this have a downvote already?? wtf
Excellent as always! Cheers, Kevin and gang
i did it
and so did someone else, but theyy changed their mind
ha, this hasnt aged well
Incredibly boring. What a let down
RG: ‘You can’t have your own facts.’ Well then RG, why do you deny existence of God?
ugggh ricky you're so obsessed with your opinions and yourself and you want to be self-aware but fall just short. moving on.
These interviews are great but what's the deal with the sidekicks? They aren't funny and they aren't interesting. I don't mean to be rude, but constructively this would be better, I think, without them.
This is why a channel with A list guests has 78k subscribers. He needed to pivot 40 shows in.
he actually said 'steroids and aids' so...
Anastasia E. I'm English. Don't know who you're talking about
Anastasia E. At one time ricky gervais meant funny and quality. Just seems to do interviews with the simpering arse kissing Americans nowadays.
