100% only watched it because it was Denzel lol. I'm not for color-blind casting most of the time, can't have a white Black Panther or black Batman, but this was well done.

Don't be an hypocrite, not knowing Denzel you would have spat on his casting and overlooked his performance. Or if tomorrow he says something you don't agree with, you will immediatly focus on his color skin and insult him based on it. You are an execrable character.
He did a very good job in the role from what I've seen, I just feel like they could've found someone of the proper ethnicity to act in the role. I get the feeling that they deliberately looked for a black actor as opposed to someone of Macbeth's actual race.
Think it's mainly that Denzel seems to be a big Shakespeare fan and this was probably produced largely for the fun of it for him and others, it only brought in half a million in revenue, it wasn't made to make money, but for the fun of it as a passion project. They also went for a deliberately "detached from reality" style that makes the whole thing seem kinda dreamlike. Probably the best way to think of it is as one big dream sequence of Denzel dreaming about himself as Macbeth.
I just can't believe all this talk about Denzel Washington's being black. I think Mr. Knowles should have simply ignored the noise and reviewed the performances. I haven't seen the movie, but I can't wait to see him work with Frances McDormand.
I don't really care what race the person they cast is, black James bond would make no difference to Me,but like others have said it needs to be consistent and not just casting to meet some woke quota.
Would have a problem with a Lesbian playing Bond? Because that's what they were talking about doing. That just wouldn't be right! A black Bond would be cool, just as long as they have a really good actor playing him, and not somebody like Will Smith.
@@Krullmatic Yes I wouldn’t want a woman playing James Bond. That’s not the character. In any way shape or form. Having the guy being a different matters not. As long as he is British. I don’t think color blind casting means replacing men characters with a different sex.

Normally I wouldn’t colorblind-cast; for example I would never cast a person with brown hair to play Repunzel. However, if their acting pulls you into the story better than others, and it doesn’t contradict the original character too drastically, then I’d absolutely choose them of random ethnicity.

to me color blind casting makes sense, give the person doing the best job the role. ALSO, if the media goes crazy about making stereotypes why not cast a black man in a "white role" , media says because the culture behind it and the upbringing. BUT the whole point of acting is expressing a whole different persona. A persona of a GUY (who cares about color) who grew up Scottish or within that culture is what the actor must portray so the color of their skin shouldn't matter... is this just me?
@@Ryan-ze9fz that's true I think that If the role calls for someone big and tall then you cant cast or 4 foot boy. But those are characteristics, and rarely does skin tone matter to the story passed the culture that is implied with it. I think a story you can claim it does matter past culture is the story of vampires and why theyre always cast as white . Because they don't like sun so it makes sense but most of the time it's the cultural significance that's implied with the skin tone.
Race doesn't matter, it's experience. Denzel Washington has previously done theatre works, ones such as Shakespeare. He has experience in plays such as Macbeth, and his a great actor in general, as many have seen from his other movies.
I got no problem with colorblind casting for fictional characters. For example, making Nick Fury black for movies or in the many marvel reboots, no problem. It just makes no sense to go colorblind for historical figures. When they made the live version if The Sound of Music in 2013 and cast Audra Macdonald as the Mother Abbess, that just made no sense, because the mother abbess was a real woman, just not a bIack woman. I mean, you could cast an Eskimo as Marco Polo, but it wouldn’t make a lot of sense.
I don't get all this being done Why ? If a person is white in real life - how can you cast the role in another race ?? Or vice versa - or switching out any race..

@@jerryjeromehawkins1712 Well, Knowles made the point pretty well in the vid. Some stories, the cultures of the characters are central and if you get them wrong, the result is stupid. And having a Mexican guy play Jackie Robinson would be stupid too. Anybody could be Macbeth though.
@@inaccessiblecardinal9352 spot on! Nah, I am not going to watch any of this. I think the casting is deliberate and their motives are suspicious. This is cultural appropriation but it’s British culture so it’s okay. I don’t know what makes American think they have ownership over British history. You should have respect foreign people’s culture. Three Kingdoms is just a novel so can you make a black guy play in this too? What’s next? Black Henry V? Black Alfred the Great? Black King Arthur. Why not? He’s completely fictional. Denzel isn't playing a Scotsman, hes playing a character by Shakespeare There is nothing scottish about Shakespeares macbeth. This is from an anglosaxon view point of scottiish history. But as a Scotsman i would love to see him play macbeth in the true story. Macbeth was one scotlands greatest kings and I would love to see denzels take on it!!!
How could it be bad with Denzel? I know history, but up until recently,I wouldn’t have paid attention to the race of the actors,I would have judged it on merits.
This is probably going to seem racist, but here’s my two cents on color-blind casting: the funniest, most iconic, greatest Asian character in cinema history was played by a white guy. This was in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Scotland again has a truly wicked leader. Nobody really looks at what's going on here. Journalists never call her out or question her. She vets all questions prior to press conferences and word has it she has interdicts (injunctions) to prevent the press printing numerous things about her. Her own party (the SNP) is not allowed to vote against the party line or they get thrown out. She's a dictator and the worst part is many Americans who have Scottish ancestry support her from over the pond when they have no idea what it's like up live under her rule!
"Shut In" is utter rubbish. No idea why the DW would make a third-rate flick in which men-bad woman-strong is the theme. This has been done to death and can be found everywhere. What's DW bringing to the party?
I'm usually against colourblind casting, but this film feels very deliberately surrealist. The emphasis is more on the meaning of Macbeth rather than creating a believable setting to the story. So I don't have an issue with Denzel being Macbeth.
Apu did not get cancelled from the part. He decided not to do it anymore. They should have made Denzel like Steve Martin in The Jerk...but race swapped.
People make too big of deal about race. God didn’t care about a race of people. In fact, this issue about ace was settled over two thousand years ago when Christ died and rose again for the salvation of all people. John 3:16.
Macbeth is Shakespeare's worst play. Macbeth is basically a Homer Simpson character, and Lady Macbeth is a dumbed down evil Marge Simpson. The story is boring, the characters are nasty and boring... William Shakespeare has DOZENS of better plays; make a movie adaptation of one of those (my 2 favorites are A Mid Sommer Nights Dream and Hamlet).
I think recasting black characters in white roles is fine as long as it's not thrown in your face, Nick fury is white in the comics and I have no problem because Sam l Jackson played him incredibly well.
So Michael, I haven't seen the movie but I really want to see it. I want to share some insights from your review. That is, in addition to your review. In terms of Denzel Washington, a black man, portraying a Scottish King should be of no consequence being as the movie was shot in black and white. By that I mean, based on being black and white, color is not introduced nor is present to 'color' our appreciation of the performance. This is a play on words, color is, but also a mechanism to see the performance, not the actors. Not say to ourselves "What the flip is a black man playing Macbeth?" Suppose Macbeth was a very sun-darkend Scot? Perhaps he was interrelated? Who cares? Its how the performance affects you and from what you say, it affected you positively. Interestingly, there is a Japanese version of Macbeth called Throne of Blood. A direct adaptation of Macbeth. No one complains about that, right. Also, if you get a chance, watch Titus (Titus Andronicus) with Sir Anthony Hopkins. An unreal performance if you like or can even tolerate Shakespear.
Think: Ian McGregor or Denzel Washington, a true Scott vs What Denzel represents in this role, which he wonderfully represents the primal power of Macbeth as a play like Picasso’s Guernica and also the message the Coen brothers always want to give via Frances McDormand (Joel Cohen’s wife) about the human condition TODAY, they put us like Shakespeare did into somebody else’s shoes, like Frances does here and more poignantly as playing Fern in Nomadland. Hats off to Knowles for breaking down the philosophy of fate vs. free will (read M. Balaguer: Free Will).
I don't care about the whole black/white issue. If the person can pull off the role, so be it. Now for the movie, I haven't seen, but really want to now as Hamlet and Macbeth are my 2 favorite Shakespeare plays. However, I would love to see a movie about the true story of Macbeth. Comparing his true life story to the play shows the first lines of Braveheart true - "History is written by those who have hanged heroes."
Michael, there have been black opera singers playing historically white roles for years. Acting is acting. Singing is singing. The story is "the thing" esp. in Shakespeare not the color of the actors skin. Skin color is NOT germane to the story of MacBeth. The story of MacBeth goes way deeper into the human condition than skin color. Just a thought.
terrible logic because why bother race swapping in the first place then? Scottish people will always portray macbeth better and look like macbeth more than a black american.
@@megasizer5119 WOW, that's an odd comment. The story is the thing in MacBeth, not the color of someones skin. Perhaps a review of the play might help. Just a thought

Of course about being woke. Just look at the Batman There is absolutely no reason whatsoever Why commissioner Gordon And Catwoman are black in this movie. Especially since their characters have always been established as white. But God forbid any white person play a black character. Everyone will lose their minds.
I got no problem with blacks playing white characters I mean acting is acting. But it always seemed lazy to me when woke Hollywood does it. Plus why do you need to replace a white dude with a black dude it always seemed racist to me, I mean is there something wrong with being white. If there wasn't double standards when it comes to woke Hollywood then I probably be OK with it. But this movie doesn't seem to be bad.

It's Denzel. I bet some people watched it just because it was him. After all, how many screened versions of Macbeth are there? A lot, I bet. Give it twenty years, there will be a female Macbeth. Not because of politics but because there are only so many ways you can tell the same story.
100% only watched it because it was Denzel lol. I'm not for color-blind casting most of the time, can't have a white Black Panther or black Batman, but this was well done.
You're my favorite Daily Wire guy,. Nice to hear from a real Catholic!
The movie is black and white. There’s why he can play it and the audience accepts it without questioning it. Great version of Macbeth.
Denzel also played Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing (1993) and he's not Spanish.
Just like Pachino isnt cuban but nobody g.a.f because Scarface is a legendary movie.
I was scrolling through your channel and man, you are obssessed with race(especially blacks), wow.
Of course they did.
I mean there's also the case that Denzel has been doing the play over at the least 3 decades.
I'm glad it's good.
Shakespeare deserves nothing less
It's not good. It's garbage.
@@Krullmatic a black james bond wouldn't look British enough, certainly wouldnt look cool either. he's meant to be a suave european spy not an african.
Seth MacFarlane isn’t a dog, so he can’t be the voice of Brian on Family Guy anymore.
Also, they should fire al the non yellow-skinned actors voicing "The simpsons"
Well said Michael
Normally I wouldn’t colorblind-cast; for example I would never cast a person with brown hair to play Repunzel. However, if their acting pulls you into the story better than others, and it doesn’t contradict the original character too drastically, then I’d absolutely choose them of random ethnicity.
Well technically if you count Tangled, Rapunzel‘s hair when cut turns brown….
Gods of Egypt & Exodus must've been very uncomfortable for you.
I wonder how people who live in Scotland feel about this?
Thank you! I didn’t want to see it until I saw your review.
Love the show man!
It was humorous to me when Knowles said: "Lady Macbeth is an early version of Hilary Clinton."
👍
5:40 Denzel did play the role of a black mobster in American Gangster. it wasn’t the sopranos but it was a true story.
Great commentary
Imagine being mad a Shakespearean trained actor is playing one of Shakespeare's protagonist.
What's next, a woman playing snow white?
Yea but I cant really take movie seriously when black guy play Scottish man.
Its stupid.
@@lucialu833 nah, you're probably just racist (which is fine). They aren't even talking with a Scottish accent. The last Macbeth was played by an Irish guy, it was great.
@@lucialu833 yea don't watch then its not that noticeable if ur basing it on merit he has the best performances if it was some random black dude maybe not denzel
So Macbeth is black too? Who knew...
White supremes erased all black people from history and replaced them falsely with white people like macbeth, shakespeare, and hamilton.
to me color blind casting makes sense, give the person doing the best job the role.
It depends on the role. Physical characteristics are important
Blekbeth
People think Shakespeare is boring or snooty but it couldn't be further from the truth, it's Quintin Tarantino on steroids.
Who thinks that?
Race doesn't matter, it's experience. Denzel Washington has previously done theatre works, ones such as Shakespeare. He has experience in plays such as Macbeth, and his a great actor in general, as many have seen from his other movies.
yup
I was kinda hesitant but now tht I’ve seen this review I’m gonna check it out. Thank u sir.
6:20 HE SAID IT! We were ALL thinking it - and HE said it! Yes, well know-ted, Mr Knowles.
👍👍👍
Being a 16th century Scottish king i thing ethnicity is important
Mel Gibson to play Nelson Mandela.
Clint Eastwood to play MLK.
I've been waiting for this. Great cast. Great director. Don't care one bit that Washington isn't Scottish. It's called "acting".
No... it's called delusional "wokeness."
When the movie Dunkirk came out all the usual fools were appalled that "people of color" were not represented in the movie... absolutely ridiculous.
What's next? Sammy Davis Jr played by an Asian lesbian in a wheelchair?
@@jerryjeromehawkins1712 Well, Knowles made the point pretty well in the vid. Some stories, the cultures of the characters are central and if you get them wrong, the result is stupid. Some stories the cultures are incidental. Scotland is mostly incidental to the point of Macbeth, like Denmark to Hamlet.
What was done in the play Hamilton is woke nonsense. And having a Mexican guy play Jackie Robinson would be stupid too. Anybody could be Macbeth though.
@@inaccessiblecardinal9352 spot on! Totally agree, Denzel fits the role great and does an excellent job, doesn’t matter one bit that he’s black and it isn’t for woke stuff either since he’s been doing plays of Macbeth and playing the lead for 3 decades. He is familiar with the character and excellent in the role.
@Yung Murk no that movie was just bad
Nah, I am not going to watch any of this. I think the casting is deliberate and their motives are suspicious. This is cultural appropriation but it’s British culture so it’s okay. I don’t know what makes American think they have ownership over British history. You should have respect foreign people’s culture. Three Kingdoms is just a novel so can you make a black guy play in this too? What’s next? Black Henry V? Black Alfred the Great? Black King Arthur. Why not? He’s completely fictional. Macbeth at least existed.
I wonder what would happen if they had Julia Roberts star in a movie about Sojourner Truth… “Ain’t I a Woman?”
I don’t think that would fly…
Aside from that little reality, I’m really excited to see this ~ it looks really interesting. Denzel is top notch in my book…
100 years ago she’d have been in blackface doing exactly that.
Scotland is the most white place you can be. Even Michael is too dark lol
I think Shakespeare is one of the mediums where you can play around. I think Denzel probably killed it.
Yea imagine they filmed the movie about Native Americans and some white dude play Sitting Bull.
I have no problem with colour casting as long as "Shaka Zulu" can be played by Johnny Depp?
"Shut In" is utter rubbish. No idea why the DW would make a third-rate flick in which men-bad woman-strong is the theme. This has been done to death and can be found everywhere. What's DW bringing to the party?
All humans belong to one species. We used to call that "Humanity."
John 3:16.
Is it better than the Michael fassbender and Marion colltiard Macbeth though?
*Not being sarcastic, genuine question, haven't watched it yet*
Denzel was also in Much ado about Nothing in the 90s. There was no controversy there.
Almost like the culture war is manufactured
Macbeth is Shakespeare's worst play. Macbeth is basically a Homer Simpson character, and Lady Macbeth is a dumbed down evil Marge Simpson. The story is boring, the characters are nasty and boring... William Shakespeare has DOZENS of better plays; make a movie adaptation of one of those (my 2 favorites are A Mid Sommer Nights Dream and Hamlet).
I loved it.
Imagine if they made a biopic about hitler and they casted black actor
Colorblind casting can be okay with FICTIONAL characters. A black Anne Boleyn is ridiculous.
I think recasting black characters in white roles is fine as long as it's not thrown in your face, Nick fury is white in the comics and I have no problem because Sam l Jackson played him incredibly well.
So Michael,
I haven't seen the movie but I really want to see it.
👍👏
Excellent!
Haven’t seen it, but given the names playing in it I’d think selection was merit based.
Now, I want a remake of Shaka Zulu with only white actors.
If only MacBeth knew about Helix matresses.
There are thousands of actors doing Shakespeare but the Upstart Crow is my new fav.
Some people in this comment section don’t understand the difference between Shakespeare and a biopic.🤣🤣🤣🤣
literally
The part is not a black or white role. Macbeth was a black man and a black Scottish king.
@@megasizer5119 PS: That new play "HAMILTON' had all black actors and actors of color....... People liked that and Hamilton was certainly not a black American......Expand you mind a little and listen to the words.....You might enjoy the play more doing that.
Mcbeth ??? Black???
Denzel was great as the prince in Much Ado About Nothing. It was a Kenneth Branagh production.
Of course about being woke.
Just look at the Batman
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever
Why commissioner Gordon
And Catwoman are black in this movie.
Especially since their characters have always been established as white. But God forbid any white person play a black character.
Everyone will lose their minds.
How would people feel if Brad Pitt play Shaka Zulu??? Yea... okay!!! But I love this movie
I think Michael Fassbender did this role better than Denzel Washington.
We need to return to God and turn away from sin we need to turn to the truth and away from lies we need to understand that pleasure does not bring long lasting happiness and maybe no happiness at all, it is in God we find peace and long lasting happiness.
Let’s do a remake of Boyz in the Hood. With Justin Bieber and Tom Hanks.
why dont more black people just make .... original content ? i really dont get it. how do they feel its okay to just be this racist ? "i dont want to make my own stories, i want the fame and spoils of your work" its fucking sad
Why can’t white people make their own music genre boggles my mind
where can you watch it on?
Let's just say Denzel being casted as a Scott is accurate , good ol society , the nation's have been strategically separated and mixed up. The word "Scott" actually means.. nvm. Bless review Ima take this movie in looks interesting
We're all in our own shakesperian play...dude was genius....my boss just died....nothing like a death to watch the vultures decend
Denzel being cast as MacBeth doesn’t bother me because Like you said Shakespeare is universal and the cinematography of the film doesn’t feel like Scottland. The setting feels like another dimension.
It's theater. Creative conceits and suspension of disbelief go with the territory.
I think you missed a perfect segue opportunity at the end of this. I was thinking bolling branch.
