Chimp Gets Injured As Loud Fight Breaks Out

  • This isn't hairless chimp Jambo's group of chimpanzees. Chimpanzees Tommy, William and Peter are on their own next door to Jambo at Chimpanzee Eden at Twycross Zoo. It is quite out of character for these three to get into a fight, especially as they all have been castrated which makes them more mellow, but today they really have a go at poor Chimp Tommy.
Peter (ears that stick out to the sides and a grey back) is whacking Tommy repeatedly. William is the one running around the two. When the biting starts, William seems to try to break them apart by stepping in the middle of them, but then William is biting Tommy's hand. William quickly lets off, but Peter is still clinging on to Tommy's back with his teeth. Peter is really going for him and William keeps trying to get into the middle of them both. Peter keeps coming back for more. They wrestle, and William is trying again to get into the middle of the two.
Peter wonders off and William gives Tommy a slap and then he bites Tommy in the back. They all still screaming and you can hear Jambo's group inside screaming as well as they are wondering what is going on outside. Now Peter has come back and is starting on Tommy once more. Tommy doesn't want to defend himself for some reason. Williams's right ear seemed to have a wound. Tommy has a wound on his back and hand. On one side William seems to want to separate the two, but on the other hand, he has a go at Tommy as well. Peter lets off for a second, William sitting on the ribbon, but then he jumps Tommy again and Peter joins again. Peter is biting Tommy's leg, William pulls on Tommy's lip. They stop for a few seconds, but then Peter starts biting again and then he whacks him a few more times on the back.
William steps into the middle again. A few seconds deprive and William checks out Tommy's injury on his back. Peter just doesn't want to let up and has one more go. Tommy still screaming loudly. Peter finally walks off. William does too and lets some steam out by kicking the glass window. Poor Tommy is still screaming his lungs out. William starts running through Chimpanzee Eden. Tommy checked out the wound on his hand. William kicks the window again with both legs. Takes a bunch of wood wool and sways one site to the other. Then he walks towards screaming Tommy and starts swaying in front of him. He carefully approaches Tommy, but Tommy moves away. William looks like he's sorry. He carefully extends his arm towards Tommy's mouth like he wants to apologize. Tommy is still screaming. They are all going inside after this and that gives staff to have a look at any injuries and treat them accordingly. Later on, Tommy is outside again licking his wounds. William and Peter are by the hut. Peter is holding Williams's arm.
Chimpanzees are naturally aggressive and fight to retain their places in the social hierarchy.
The small group was supposed to join Jambo's group, but at the moment I'm not sure if this is still the plan or not. The plans seem to change quite frequently. As always I'll keep everyone informed as soon as I know more.
Update: I have seen them after this happened in September and they all seem fine, no reports of any new fights. Tommy's wounds have healed that much that nothing was visible.
William is Chimpanzee Jambo's half-sibling. They both have the same dad. He was born on the 30th June 1982.
Peter was born on the 9th July 1992 and is Jambo's son.
Tommy is unrelated and was born on the 30th Jan 1995.
Chimpanzee's population is declining mostly through habitat loss.
What do chimpanzees eat? They are omnivores like us humans. They eat fruit, veg, insects and are known to kill small monkeys in the wild.

@@SloggerVlogger Has it been a group of 3 for very long? A group of three is really hard, because when conflicts start, the dominant always has a number 2. And that means 2 on 1 all of the time. I have seen a group of 3 in a sanctuary, but other than the male being larger than the 2 females and stealing food, there isn't too much that they've shown that looks serious. They've lived together for a long time; hopefully they're going to be able to integrate them into another group of 6, some of whom know each other already

It is high time for the zoo administration to understand that chimpanzees of different subspecies differ in behavior, and sometimes they are not compatible for living in the same group, and in hybrids in general, pathology of behavior can be observed. Tommy is a Verus, originally from the west coast of Africa, while William has the distinct features of the schweinfurth of Tanzania. Peter seems to be a hybrid of schweinfurth and Central African traglodytes

Sometimes I find it hard to understand why the victim being attacked doesn't fight back more. Specially in this case as he is bigger than the two attackers. The one being attacked mostly tries to protect his belly keeping it pinned to the ground. No wonder they are castrated.
Interesting that one of them seemed to break up the clinch like a referee but then got in a bite as well. A couple of injuries but looks like they will all mend ok.

When It comes to 2v1, the person has to knockout the first and switch to the other person fast or having them fear you as you fight with no fear for you health. But chimps mostly bite so they can't really knock except making them fear him and especially this one who shows his vulnerable side to them

Water cannons have given people concussions, and blown-out eardrums, broken noses, crush eye sockets causing blindness, broken/cracked ribs. I'd say that's a risk for serious harm. A 100lb chimp has nearly the same strength as a 200lb man in decent shape. So if a water cannon will demolish a human it will do the same to a chimp. Have you not seen riot videos where people are knocked off their feet and thrown several yards back? This is what chimps do. It's reality.

I see a lot of open & soon to fester wounds. They attackers also try to castrate and even tear out the anus on their victim. Survival of the fittest.

Zoos aren't all abusive animal prisons that are only there for profit. Many zoos have animal rehab and education programs, and they help fund conservation organizations. Also, pretty much every animal in a zoo was born in captivity, meaning they'd more than likely die in the wild. I know there are some zoos that conduct immoral practices, but that's not true with every zoo.

It was bad but death is an option in any crazy chimp fight so lets be content with this outcome.

Chimps fight all the time, even wild Chimpanzees fight. Fighting is an important part of Chimp hierarchy, it is how they can ascend the ranks.

its only brutal from our perspective chimps have no sense of remorse or right and wrong. just whats "fair" they rip of your nuts fingers toes whatever it means to be you wild really because we are only 2% different from them genetically and the more i learn about our distant relatives the more i agree with what I've learned like when your a kid and you get extremely jelous of something or someone and have an urge to hurt them thats our primal urge coming out there fascinating creatures

They can rip a human to shreds with ease but whenever they get challenged by an alpha male which is essentially their equal in terms of species cowers and doesn't defend itself. How does that make sense?

Chimpanzees are 36% stronger than humans, so they can easily rip us apart, but when it comes to other chimps, they have the equal strength to do the same amount of damage to themselves.
