I truly think that Terunofuji is competing so that if Kotozakura or Hoshoryu make the score to make Yokozuna and beat him then nobody can say they had the easy road and didn’t have to face the reigning Yokozuna. I believe if that happens he will retire.
@MrWhateverfits he did and got schooled. To be fair since he has pretty much come back, smashed it and gone off again. So until people win when he is there then Teru is still the top of the tree.
I practice jiujitsu and found sumo 3 weeks ago because I wasn’t practicing jiujitsu due to an injury. I absolutely love sumo now and have a great respect for these rikishi. My wife and I are headed to Japan this year and we are going to see sumo live! I’m so happy to have found sumo! 😃
Hoshoryu's transition to more direct sumo is absolutely paying dividends if this is how he is doing in practice as Yokozuna candidate. Pleased to hear such sparkling reviews on him.
This is the most excited I've been for a tournament in a while. Two legitimate Yokozuna candidates, a hungry and motivated Ozeki in Onosato and dai-Yokozuna Terunofuji competing. As long as everyone stays healthy, this is going to be a blast.
@@samsuddinhussain1123 don't forgot Takanosho! He is gunning for a yusho and if he can stay consistent it is a distinct possibility that he could get it! Takerufuji is probably continuing to recover from his injuries too, and he's scary when he's fully healthy.
I'm of mixed feelings myself. I don't want him to hurt himself more or start to get pummelled in the first days and then bow out unceremoniously. Fingers crossed that his tournament goes well.
Please! lets go Hoshoryu! He has the skills and the adaptation skills to deal with a variety of opponents. More so, he has the presence that comes with being in that big of a position. Btw you can tell some of this footage is old, Ichinojo there at 4:40
thanks for the news as always. Kotozakura might be hurt or is trying to stay healthy for the actual basho. not often is he beaten in such a way. seems like Hoshoryu is really eager for this year, wishing him the best. good to see the yokozuna taking part in the january basho. i really hope he's in the condition for some more consecutive tournaments. the more time the up and comers get with him in the ring the better. even if he's not in his topform, he's still the yokozuna and has many tricks up his sleeve!
as a relatively new sumo enthusiast of 2y, Terunofuji is my personal Goat knowing his full sumo story. Glad to hear we'll be seeing him in action again, where he will no doubt show that he's the Yokozuna for a reason
2:40 yo Hoshoryu that was just straight disrespect. Man this next tournament is going to be crazy good all the wrestlers are getting super hyped. I love the pageantry of sumo and when you see rikishi like Hoshoryu and Kotozakura you see what Sumo is all about.
A truly Yokozuna decision! Comes from injury and diabetes directly into a tournament with three very strong Ozeki! All the best luck to him in January. Kotozakura and Hoshoryu are probably the most deserving now, but I am hoping for Onosato to be the next Yokozuna. And I really hope that we will have two Yokozuna for some time
Not possible. Teru will have to fight both Kotozakura and Hoshoryu. So if he goes 15-0, he beats them both. They also have to face each other so one of them would at minimum would have 2 losses. Also, if Teru wins the yusho, there is no chance whatsoever of Hoshoryu obtaining Yokozuna this basho. He did not win at least one of 2 consecutive bashos and have a "yusho equivalent". A 14-1 Kotazakura however is almost assured of being promoted to Yokozuna
Hosh was pissed after his performance in previous bouts. November he came back strong, even with the injury, and is keeping that momentum. I can't wait to see him win. I think he will be next yoko.
I kind of love Teru position at the moment, everybody could tell he wanted that 10th yusho so much but, now that he has it He's more content to rest up and gather his strength for the moment when he has to pull a hakuho and be the wall for the next generation to climb over. Whoever gets a rope next is going to have to meet an active Teru on the clay to do it.
Exaiting 2025 Sumo year begining soon . Thanks Chris of neews always LOT INFO ..SOMETIMES even too much to me 😂😂 Expecting...Teru out ..new Yokozuna in. ( ? KOTOZAKURA? , Onosato , ) Hopes of mine Enho ,to jurio 🙏 Hoshoryu Yokozuna 👌 Kirishima ozeki again💪 TAMAWASHI 🎉 Wakaikari and Kawazoe ❤ Raiho come again .
Wow, if Tamawashi is doing that good against Joi-Jin opponents then we might see some great things from him against the mid maegashira guys he’ll actually face in the basho! It’s been a long time since he hit double digits wins, not since his yusho a couple years back, so I would love to see him hit that mark again.
He has no choice but a Yusho. They will not make the same mistake they made back in 1986 by promoting Futahaguro without at least one of the 2 being a Yusho. They promoted him without him even winning a single yusho let alone one as an Ozeki. Hoshoryu has 1 Yusho and that was at the rank of Sekiwake. He will not be promoted sans yusho this time. And coming off a Jun-Yusho, he will most def need a 14-1 score at that. 13-2 Yusho may not be enough.
He no longer talked to his uncle. Hoshoryu blocked him or something before November 2024 tournament. See how confident Hosh's sumo has become after that
That's the difference between Mongolian vs Japanese. The Japanese are more reserved in showing their emotions. It would be a mistake to think they don't want it just as much.
I've watched some of the stable practice bouts, Kotozakura might be nursing a leg injury because he was unable to resist being pushed. Hoshoryu however is fighting like a man who's possessed. That last title loss must have really stung him.
I don't think he has a family. It's a custom in Japan to hand babies to sumo wrestlers because it is thought to bring good luck and make them grow strong. But you're right, Hoshoryu looks very different when he's smiling - he actually does that a lot on tours and informal occasions - that Genghis Khan scowl is just his tournament face :)
Everyone's all Hoshoryu this, Kotozakura that... and don't get me wrong, I love them both and would be thrilled to have a new Yokozuna. But I don't think Onosato, Terunofuji, or even Takerufuji are looking to settle for 3rd place. Last time Onosato went 9-6, he went 13-2 and won the next basho. And as Takerufuji's injuries continue to improve his threat level only goes up. This is to speak nothing of vicious competitor like Abi and Takanosho. We're in for another good one, I think!
Abi? really? Dude is so hit or miss it's almost surreal. Takanosho is past his prime. I thought he was going to make Ozeki when he first made Sanyaku and he basically fell flat from there. Injuries played a small part but even when he was healthy, you never knew which Takanosho was going to show up
@@ricmndy1 I didn't mean Abi in the sense that he's a contender for the cup or belt, but in the sense that he still delivers significant upsets to those who are. Same for Takanosho, with the addition of the possibility of him taking a yusho if things line up for him - not become a yokozuna.
I still think.. who? When I hear Kotozakura. My mind automatically translate it to , Kotonowaka. I can't help it I tell you. Kirishima is still KIribyama too. Am I the only one?
Kinda hurts to hear that Kotozakura is losing so much against his fellow Ozeki. Probably a bit of yusho sickness there... Hope he turns it around before sunday. Thanks, Chris!
Those practice bouts... Do they mean anything? We have often seen various sekitori doing great in practice and then losing big time in the actual basho. Kotozakura's calm response tells me he's not overly worried.
@@Shenordak You've got a point. They usually try to be at the peak when the tournament hits, not a week before. Then again, rikishi always response calmly before tournaments, to show strength. A video titled 【横綱・大関】稽古総見<令和7年一月場所前> was just posted. From google translate, it's the yokozuna and Ozeki fighting it out in front of the yokozuna deliberation council. To me, Kotozakura just looks physically weaker than the other ozeki right now, so it's not just the match results I'm going off of. I'd like to hear your thoughts on that video, if you have time to watch it.
Practice bouts don't translate to tournament. We know Hoshoryu, like fellow Mongolian Hakuho, fights harder, baseline. They call it "spirit." In tournament, the effort gap is less dramatic.
Everyone is rooting for Nephew! I have nothing against Hoshoryu, but I want Kotozakura to make Yokozuna first! But actually, I think Terunofuji will keep both of them from getting the Rope. For now.
Terunofuji can't keep Kotozakura from the rope, only Hoshoryu. He only faces Koto once, maybe twice if there is a playoff. Kotozakura will be promoted with a 14-1 Yusho or Jun-Yusho. Hoshoryu on the other hand has no yusho (in the last 2 basho) to fall back on for promotion
Yes, almost assuredly. They've already both been confirmed to be on Yokozuna runs so a Yusho for Hoshoryu at 14-1 or better will get him that rope. Maybe a 13-2 but that makes it an outside chance. BUT...if Kotozakura is a 14-1 jun-yusho, that means Hoshoryu is better and will be promoted. Kotozakura only needs a 13-2 or better Jun-Yusho.
Make Terunofuji take off his knee pads FFS He has them on now all the time, it's not cool that he has those metal contraptions on his knees even though he's not injured there any more. If he can't compete without them, then he should quit Sumo
Firstly they are made of plastic not metal and there are other wrestlers who wear them when competing. Secondly, he still suffers from knee injury otherwise he would not be wearing them. They may not look cool to you but please show him some compassion and respect. I think he’s earned it.
I truly think that Terunofuji is competing so that if Kotozakura or Hoshoryu make the score to make Yokozuna and beat him then nobody can say they had the easy road and didn’t have to face the reigning Yokozuna. I believe if that happens he will retire.
