    Eric, I cannot thank you enough for these videos. I had a blown valve on the 4th cylinder and these videos helped me step by step to get it replaced. I didn't have the tools I needed to replace the valve, but I did drop the head off at an engine shop and they replaced the valves and cleaned it for $150. After that, I reinstalled everything using a new head gasket and followed this video to a T. I fired up the Mini for the first time yesterday, praying for the best but preparing for the worst, and she had no problems. You sir, are an absolute genius and once again, I cannot thank you enough. Hope to see you back on here again soon. Thanks again for everything you do!

    I admire you so much for filming and doing all this stuff. I can’t even imagine how much more work it is to document the steps. (where is Brian these days btw.? Still abroad?)
    I made my first ever timing belt on my Citroen last weekend. Never thought I would do this kind of work on my car one day, but with the encouragement of your videos I got more confident over the years and I‘m so happy I do all the work myself now...there is a different connection to your car when you and only you are involved on the repairs. Thank You Eric for everything you do! A loyal fan since your little dark garage times. :)

    Very cool to hear it running. I'll likely never have a mini but love looking at the machining and of course watching it come apart and back together! Thanks for being real about the struggles. Makes me less upset with myself when crank timing gears done get torqued right and you have to do it again.

    Hello Eric, I can see you are knowledgeable about engines. I watched both videos on the Mini bent valves. I have some comments about how you worked the head on the bench. This is just FYI; One should never work on an overhead cam head with the head gasket surface against the work bench. An overhead cam head should always be supported by head stands at all times. This protects the valves from coming in contact with the bench as four of the valves did on that Mini head when you installed the cam timing brackets. In the 2nd video, between the 10 minute and 10min 30 second mark is where you can see the valves come in contact with the work bench. Also, the rear exhaust valve in #2 combustion chamber had contacted something at some time. Everything else you did seemed to be good work.

    I've watched all of the "Mini Series" videos, and even though a lot of folks are cringing at the amount of work that it seems to take to get access to stuff on this engine, it really doesn't seem to be that bad! Yes, the idea of removing the entire front end seems like a major undertaking, but it it's done smartly, like Eric has done it, it's really fairly easy. Modern cars are designed for easy assembly at the factory, and can be taken apart in larger chunks to get to things.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I don't think this car is that bad to work on. What I do think is that the parts are fragile and expensive.

    I did this job a few months ago to change the valve shaft seals in my car, since I had to take the head off anyway. I'm a hobbyist and did not have the required tools before, so I just bought a very cheap clamp tool for around 15 bucks from ebay and it came with all sorts of adapters to fit all car. And I did not have any problems whatsoever with parts flying off everywhere or anything like that. Yes the thing was a screw on clamp and it took some time to screw it on and off again, but it still was worth every penny.

    On heads that I was able to have the stems protrude enough, I attached a vacuum line to the stem and then to a regular electric drill (or whatever you could use for the line) and start with course for a short period and then go to fine and make that valve seat shine. Just like testing it before-hand, you can use water to see if your valves seat in after you put springs and keepers in.

    I just met a guy who bought a used mini Twinkie, the dealership said it needed valve guide seals to stop it from smoking, quoted him 5,500 for the repair. He actually paid for the extended warranty on the engine, insurance tried to get out of it but the dealership got it approved and sent the head to a machine shop. The dude was happy because the top end of the engine was all fixed by the insurance.

    Tip 2: I've read the injector Teflon seals must be sized before install and they will expand if removed from the engine for more than 10min. They are really not that fussy and if condition looks okay they don't need changing just because you pull an injector. New injectors come with seals pre sized already to 8mm dia. and they compress to 7.8mm in the engine. I didn't notice any expansion even after removal for some days. Of course if you put a new seal on an old injector it will need sizing to 8mm because you stretch it over the tip.

      Same here man, I do the same for my other favourite TH-camr's that I cant afford to pay for their merch to keep them going. Us as a canvases should be more inclined to do it really, if you're not gonna do anything for the channel then what use of a subscriber are you? Haha
      Love the vids Eric, you've helped me through a few pickles and for that I'm super grateful. Keep it up brother 💪

    with the cost of maintenance on any car, especially the Mini. I have tackled a lot on my own. Just did a trans swap a few months ago, and now need to do a timing chain on my 07 Mini. Thanks to videos like this and having some mechanical ability I am not afraid to tackle those tasks. Besides you can still put it in the trash if its in pieces and doesn't run. What have you lost?

    I just bought a Mini Cooper that skipped time........ partially because this video made it seem like a bit of fun....... Did i miss you using the cam holding / timing tools on this one?
    Got to have a hobby........ Wish me luck.

    Tip: Install the injectors in the rail (by hand) then install the whole assembly on the engine. Those blue o rings can easily be pinched and cut if you try to install the rail on to of the preinstalled injectors.

    Great series Eric, I have done the timing chain on my Mini Cooper Clubman the other month, and last weekend it started runniing on 3. What do you know no compression on cylinder 4, so looks like I'll be taking the head off and this guide is perfect. Subbed from over in England.

      Aubrey Bush I just got a 2013 HT non turbo, it has 55,000 miles. Selling it as soon as possible. Love it but I rather own a Lexus. These BMW engines are not worth time and money to work on. Not much of an eye turner car anyway.

    As for the scrubbing/ cleaning small places issue....get a really good gun cleaning kit. .17 all the way up to 10 gauge. They had brass and plastic brushes for all those sizes and a lil cleaning wad you can get a clean engine.

      really? with the swivel strong magnet? the swivel magnet is what makes the light awesome. Eric O just attaches it to anything metal and aims it to the area.

    Did you change the valve stem seals? These engines burn oil that leaks by the seals.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I didn't. The engine burns oil because of a poor PCV system. A catch can will likely help a lot.

  • @fshblw

    Maybe you didn’t show it all in this video,but I’ve never seen a timing chain removed without the timing cover taken off and same with installation..to get the timing correct at the crankshaft you have to be able to see the timing marks it’s impossible without the removal of the timing cover.
