notation was only a thing because of classical music, before that people used tabs, so no shame in not knowing how to read notes or only know tabs

Ace's guitar had a hell of a lot to do with the Kiss sound. His riffs were simple but clever, and those licks had tonnes of flash! And that unique bending style was all his own.

Naturally gifted with music, no need to read or understand it. Just a cool 70's guitarist who had his own individual style. Ace influenced countless youth who started bands in the 80's / 90's.

Fan since 1976. The more I listen to my classic catalog of Page, Clapton, Beck and others I realize Ace can easily be part of this "first call" list of guitarists. His chops weren't technical but then the greatest chops usually aren't. Soul is the main ingredient and Ace always had it in spades.
Eddie Kramer said it best: "Ace was the heart and soul of Kiss". Those first six studio LPs and the live albums are an education unto themselves. Not to mention his first solo LP is a classic. Ace consistently delivered the goods.
As an aside Mike McCready is a badass. Huge Ace fan and plays in a UFO cover band. Written some classic with PJ as well.

Ace is the reason i play today. his solos are so melodic one can sort of sing them. He and Jimmy Page play a lot of the same licks. Love them both equally, That being said, where Jimmy brought the Zeppelin songs, Ace seems to be a lot crispier on the lead. then again it was Page who came up with those English guitar licks

    First !
Who cannot enjoy all the original Kiss recordings up to but excluding Dynasty ( !? )

    • @kilgoretrout3966
      @kilgoretrout3966 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Including Dynasty! Excluding Unmasked & Elder.... You gotta be crazy to skip 2000 Man or even Sure know Something From Dynasty. People can call it Rock Disco if they like, but i Counter with The Stones -Some Girls. Miss You is a solid groove, how do you discount it or Shattered?, simply because they have a Soul+Funk groove underneath. Plus, what is wrong with that groove? The whole "Disco sucks" is an old, tired trope, used mostly because it was a transitional period.
If you think of it, many forms were dying then. Art Rock- Yes, Kansas, ELP and King Crimson- all GREAT Bands that all but disappeared, but it was a period of cosmic shift. Jeff Beck and others of the 20 minute, self indulgent solos ilk disappeared as well. Then, 2 forms exploded out of that shift, namely "quote/unquote, Disco" and Punk.
I assert to you, that both of those short lived forms combined to create New Wave. Think of Bands like Blondie, Elvis Costello & the Attractions, and even Talking Heads used elements of both in their eponymous works. But, hey, as they say, it is all subjective- to a point. i stand pretty strong behind my assertion, having lived through the End of the Beatles, though the 70's and the time discussed when it comes to Dynasty. They moved with the times. A lot of bands didn't, and became irrelevant, and of course Kiss didn't make the next quick shift and fell out of favor for many.
However, the 80s and 90s, though several people love many parts of that era, save for Unmasked at least, some even love Elder, but i lost my love for their original material with Dynasty. Unmasked pissed me off, cuz as a young, rebellious man, i took it to mean they would quite literally unmask- on an inner sleeve or something. When i saw it was just a stupid, comic book cover concept...then hearing the material inside -this guy was done. i went to the Reunion and Farewell Tours, taking my oldest Son. Again, with the Farewell Tour, i, much like Ace, took them at their word. Just like Unmasked, Farewell was in name only, and all the things they said about staying in the game too long, ImHO are, and have, come to fruition.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but I've met Ace three times in the past couple years. At a horror con in Indy in 2011, at a book signing in Chicago later in 2011 (the day after he played House Of Blues which was a great show!) and again at the same horror con in Indy in 2012. He didn't act like my best friend, but he was nice, shook my hand and thanked me for coming. I'm in a wheelchair and pretty easy to remember (or so I'm told). One of his guys hooked me up to make sure I could get through the line and he told Ace that he'd met me before and Ace said in his squeaky accent, "I thought he looked familiar" I'm sure he didn't remember me, but it was still, it was Ace Frehley! They let me sit in the room across from Ace while he was signing, Eddie Balances was in the room and they were telling some stories. I can see why some people might say he's a dick, but the guy is getting up there in age, and if you listen the other members of KISS, when Ace first joined, and when he wasn't completely loaded he was kind of quiet. He's sober now so he's probably just more like that guy.

Paul Stanley IS KISS! Ace only played on a handful of albums in the ‘70s. Paul carried KISS throughout the ‘80s-‘90s by himself! Gene was too busy screwing Cher and Diana Ross and making shitty movies with Tom Selleck like “Runaway” to write great songs and be a full member of KISS during that time. Ace is a very unique talented guitarist and he has a hilarious personality! lol But Paul was ALWAYS the creative genius and driving force in KISS.

Ace Frehley was one of my first solo guitarist that peaked my interest. I am 57 years old now and still play to this day, mostly heavy metal. I remember Kiss in the early years and I just wanted to play like him. I wanted to be in the band!! I went through so many LP's trying to figure out what he was doing. Back and forth at the solos I would ruin the record and have to buy another one. I may be responsible for Kiss selling so many albums in the early days. Ace is and always will be one of my favorites!!

Ace doesn't shy away from playing/ jamming with other bands or musicians. He's real down to earth and humble in that sense. I love that about him. So many guitarists started playing because of him, but he doesn't gloat about it and that's just awesome!

Ace is more than a virtuoso -
    Ace is The Spaceman -
Ace is Ace - One of the Greats
And hands down the best laugh in Rock !
Ace is and always has been my fave along with Peter -
KISS ain't KISS without em -

I truly admire Aces honesty and openness to his fans. What a good guy and open book.
He can be a bit repetitive because he is getting older but he is truly a legend and he is a genuine cool guy.

Finally found this in 2021. One solid hour of Ace just chilling and being real. He was always that way, and that is perhaps the key thing about this guy - he makes you feel like you could sit and have a - bottle of water - together and just talk. Cheers Ace!

Ace is wonderful, so easy going, generous...one of a kind ! A blues album would be awesome. His style is unique and the way he ace-ified any songs he performs is great ! He raw voice, his Bronx accent really makes a big difference on the songs. He is a great rock'n'roll lead singer ! Watching that video was like chatting with him in my living room. Ace is the cooooooooooooolest !

When does an established artist get their life back ? I hear a lot about guys like Ace who blow hot and cold on the fans . He has been being approached by strangers acting as if they know him for over 40 years . To me , say " Nice to meet you ." then move on .

As soon as I heard Ace singing Cold Gin, gene never sounded right to me again. The way of the song as well as the lyric's are so Ace-infused. If only he had the courage back in the day to sing it on their debut. Gene singing Cold Gin just doesn't fit, it really never did. I guess I say that on count of how he scolds people who have a drink or smoke a little. It's weird
