Can you tell me more about tree salvage? I know you guys don’t have trees cut down for your use but I’m not sure how and where you get them. It’s good to see how much you love wood and trees - I noticed you were enjoying the eucalyptus tree as a living thing and not trying to figure out how to chop it down while no one is looking. To wait 3 years for wood to season shows your patience and dedication to your work.
Tree salvage is generally yard trees or orchard trees that have lived out their useful lifespan or are diseased, problematic, or dangerous. People go crazy about cutting down trees, but a lot of the hobby and hand made furniture is from tree salvage. I for one would much rather the tree end up in my garage where I try to make something nice out of it than getting burned up as firewood or ending up in a landfill.

We have huge amounts of eucalyptus here in South Africa. Were given to us by the Aussies 😂 There are hundreds of species. The best to use is eucalyptus cladocalyx. The rest are used for fire wood. Most of the trees are exotics. They are cut down and exported to Cambodia to be used for building marinas, due to their high glue/ gum content.
I was given a eucalyptus trunk I would say about 3 ft High 3 + 1/2 and after I got it cleaned up in my shop and I added some olive oil and bee's wax to it, was just so beautiful I wanted to put a small Anvil on it, it had a reddish blood color to it.
Hi Guys, So impressed with what you do with timber , and your passion. I am only a one man show with a CNC and I do a fair bit of resin work. I have had some failures with deep pours , what do I need to look for in an epoxy resin if I want to do a pour of about 30 to 40mm in one go. Thank you for your videos, they are truly inspirational.
Questions: (1) do you pay up front entire price before they will slab and then sit on for 3+ years before going to kiln? If so, seems you might have right to question the “seasoning” need for that duration only because they are sitting on your money and letting it earn interest/value while you tie up your funds, thus causing you to bake it into very high pricing for your end product. Seems to me they have every incentive to increase the “recommended” aging time. You then also risk things such as their financial solvency and they hopefully stay in business. At a minimum, I would want the money put into escrow which they could also get loans against, etc. Or at minimum you keep the earned interest value from those funds. Still, seems unusual.
We haven’t paid any deposit on the wood. They are holding it for us on good faith. The three years is necessary to maintain the maximum amount of natural colour. It also prevents excessive cracking or warping during the drying process. 😁
We only use salvaged trees, so they're ones that either are rotting inside and have fallen over on their own, or are causing safety hazards to people and need to be cut down so they don't collapse on someone's house. Those are just a couple examples, obviously there are more scenarios but the bottom line is we don't get trees cut down just to make tables!

I know it sounds counter intuitive but it is completely necessary. The wood must be dried slowly to ensure the colour will be retained and the slabs will stay flat with no cracks. If the wood is put in the kiln right away, you will lose colour, crack the wood, and cause it to warp. Bugs are never really an issue with walnut!
