    One of my all-time fav BTO songs! Certain nuisances of the strumming, etc. you gave me made all the diff in the world. Thank you!!

    Many thanks to you, and for that matter, others musicians like you, who put these videos up. They're a great help to people like me. I've gigged on and off for many years doing rock/pop/blues type stuff and, while I've always gotten good feedback on my playing, particularly my improvisational skills, my biggest weak point is my lack of ability and willingness to sit down and pick out guitar parts note for note. I'm just too distractible and impatient. So, thank you again, you've helped me to bring a finer focus to songs where I need to a bit more accurate. Cheers!

    Bachman Turner Overdrive such a Canadian iconic band. I love this song and attempted it a couple years ago but now my chops are more proficient I am ready to lay a beatin' on this song. Thanks Mark for a really kick ass tune. I want to play this with my band.

    Sorry about leaving the coaching lesson so abruptly but I had something come up. But after your brief aside re: TCB had to pop over for a view. Great lesson but I might have enjoyed your songfacts just as much. For us newbies I think the little stretch is great for developing some hand strength incrementally. As always Thanks, needed one like this, abit easier to get under one's fingers to get out of a learner's funk.

    Is that Body of the guitar as uncomfortable as it looks to hold....Thought about getting that one but it sure looks uncomfortable. Thanks for the video....sounds great.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! No, actually it's quite comfortable to hold. The bottom horn is more angular and shorter cut than a Tele which I think gives the illusion that it's "wobbly" or uncomfortable. When holding the guitar it's like a more comfortable Tele because it has a "tummy cut" in the back.
      If you want to put the guitar down though, you need a stand, because the base of the guitar is slanted just a little. I made the mistake of leaning it against my amp and ... CRASH!
      In any event, I'm a fan of Reverend Guitars. Well-built and they sound good. This one used to be my #1 guitar. Not so much these days, but I still really like it!

    Confused...how is 11-12-11 a c7 triad?

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry if I said that. If you mean at around 6:25, I said (on strings 3, 2, and 1 respectively) 12-11-12. It's a C7 chord without the root note. (C7 = C-E-G-Bb ... the chord I played is G-Bb-E) Sorry that I said "triad". It's a 7th chord. But because it has 3 notes and skips the root I often think of it as a triad.

    • @ccmkoho
      @ccmkoho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Zabel , thanks. I guess I need to re-read my music theory books. I had thought that it still needs the note, “C”, in this case in the chord, such as an inversion. Thanks for all your lessons and song breakdowns!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ccmkoho I think the main thing is that it's 12-11-12, not 11-12-11, which would be a straight B major triad. 12-11-12 is what's played in the song ... functions as a C7.
      My advice would be to NOT spend time re-reading theory. It will give a definition of a dominant 7th as Root, 3rd, 5th, and flatted 7th. That's 4 notes. But good players often leave out notes, particularly roots, because they're played by other instruments. Usually the 3rd and the 7th are enough to support the melody in a blues based song. Danny Gatton called this the two note wonder. (Try this out for yourself in an A blues using strings 4 and 3 in the standard 5th position. You'll be amazed at what happens if you don't already know this. A7, D7, and E7 ... but only use the 3rd and 7th of each chord and don't move positions.)
      I already apologized for the cavalier use of "C7 triad". What I mean by it is "three note chord that functions as a C dominant". But that's rather long language, so I tend to be a bit cavalier with it.
      Give a listen to really good rhythm players from Brad Paisley to Hendrix to Johnny Marr to Keith Richards. You'll find they're often playing only portions of chords when they're not playing specific riffs.

    • @ccmkoho
      @ccmkoho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Zabel , ah yes, thank you. Your explanation makes much more sense to me now! I see how in the context of the song key how the c7 is implied.
