So, how to u-turn dirt bikes in tight spots? If you like single track then you will have come across situations where there's not enough space to to a very tight corner, or you've hit the end of the track and need to do a u-turn. You can waste a lot of energy and time trying to man handle your bike around so here are some ways to make it much easier.

A very handy trick, especially for shorter riders, is to use the sidestand for u-turn dirt bikes in tight spots. These vids provide insights on how to u-turn dirt bikes in enduro terrain through free enduro training vids, featuring riding techniques from Chris Birch, Graham Jarvis and other top extreme enduro riders to form the concept of cross training - a blend of trials and enduro techniques.
This is the next easiest technique, just sliding the rear wheel and again just needs six feet of minimum space for a u-turn. The popularity of extreme enduro, endurocross and hard enduro events has led to cross training - trials skills blended with dirt riding on enduro bikes. Subscribe to this TH-cam channel for enduro techniques, endurocross training and dirt bike skills.
You don't need a lot of revs for this, and simply pull in the clutch if things aren't going as planned. Practise this on a flat consistent fine gravel surface first before trying it off road. An advantage of this technique is you can still do it with short legs, as long as you have enough strength to hold the bike at a 45 degree angle.
It is easiest to learn this u-turn technique on a loose surface like fine gravel or hard sand where it is easy to brake traction. Just aim for 90 degree turns to start with, and facing slightly uphill to make controlling the bike easier.
    CHALLENGE YOURSELF
As you become more comfortable with u- turns, try them on terrain with more grip or uneven surfaces to test your clutch work and control over the bike. Once you feel you have mastered this, there is a more advanced technique called the pivot turn that we will cover soon. You can get the bike up on the back wheel and spin it in distances less than the length of the bike, an invaluable skill when caught in very tight gnarly terrain!

I am by no means a good rider in the dirt at all as most of my riding experience is on the street. I watched this video like 3 or 4 times and mentally went through everything and then went to try it on my DRZ. I've tried to do the foot down turnaround many times before but was just guessing on what to do. But this time I went out, stopped, turned the bars, leaned the bike, and did everything mechanically step by step- and literally did it on the first try. I was even able to repeat it in succession over and over. I could not believe that a 2 minute video allowed me to learn a skill I've tried numerous times unsuccessfully on my own. You guys absolutely rock.

Thanks Barry!.....another key success factor for the rear tyre spin u-turn is to keep the front wheel locked towards the direction of the spin....that prevent a the bike from jumping away from you.

I know this is an old video but I've just come across it and man- thanks for breaking down the spinning U-turn and pivot turn! I was always intimidated to try these. Much like sex I thought the secret was to just to dump the clutch, crack the throttle, look the other way and hope it would come out right. Boy was I wrong- I think for both exercises. Your videos got me over the hump on deciding to buy a DR and now I've sold off the street bikes and changed my wardrobe to consist of dirt boots, sleeveless shirts and smelly gloves. Never been happier!

Hi SGP, I will be practicing this one quite a bit on my DR200. As always thanks again, the breakdown really makes it easy to understand how to execute the technique... now if only my body would listen to my mind! ;) T4S
