They're fun but honestly you have to enjoy a "rustic" driving experience. For some odd reason I enjoy this. Maybe it's the purely mechanical nature of driving, the fuel efficiency or the waves and smiles you get from others who remember these.
good call on stopping on the triple square. I have had some of those head bolt break triple squares back in the day. If you would have fired that without changing those rings it probably would have RUN AWAY..... so much oil bypassing the rings once it ran it would rev up until it ran out of oil....
You have the heart of a Lion! It is not just about standing up against the mice. It is about the rust and all of the mechanical challenges, registration issues... Wow!
I don't know what you know about the VW. You do not have the fastest car on the road but it is a 50 mpg car. They are very reliable. We had one and drove it almost 200 thousand with very little trouble. You will have a very fun little truck. If you live in a cold climate make sure the glow plugs work correctly because it will be hard to start in the winter if they don't. Good luck with it, it's even fun to work on and very simple as you know by now.
Enjoyed that, looking forward to the next installment! These Mk1 Caddys were everywhere here in the UK for decades; most were run into the ground by or rusted away. The only ones you see now are restored examples, and they fetch a lot of money. The front end is different on the European version, with round lights and a slimmer bumper.
I get a kick out of watching these kinds of videos..I have been binge watching vise grip garage seeing all the old cars and trucks being brought back to life
XZN-bits are the BEST bolt remover. Drill a (undersized) hole in the bolt, and just hammer it in. They work great since they are not conical in any way but instead "creates" its own supertight fit without wedging. Some previous owner of my car had done an engine clean(why?) and had not removed the standing water that had leaked in at one of the spark plugs. That over time caused the spark plug to totally rot away. When I was to replace them it snapped right off. The center electrode and all came off but all from the threads and down were left in the head. All came out just fine with a XZN-bit and some brute force.
Really enjoyed the video! I found myself watching so intently when it finally came time to see if the crank would move. Definitely very resourceful, with building your own square bit too. Can't wait to see the next video on this project. Hat's off to you!
An inspiration for all of us staring at unfinished projects. Time is an invaluable asset for human beings. After all the work getting the engine unstuck it would be a shame if you don't finish it, but two years is a long time to work on something so it'll get done!

I have an '84 Rabbit with the 1.6 diesel! I've been meaning to do a head gasket job on it and I think you've inspired me to just finally dive in. I have the Bentley service manual for any rebuild specs info if you need them!
Thanks for sharing and for saving an Old VW. I want one of those. That is a Project and a half. Hopefully, it will work out for you and you will not have to put a lot $$ into, and you will have a nice little truck. I see no way of getting out the "Sweat Equity". Can't wait to see more of these "episodes".
Great job on freeing up the engine! Good tips as well. I've had several of those trucks, and they're great little rigs. The linkage parts are available to make it all work as intended. Once you get it all sorted, it should be a great truck! Also, seats from a mk1, 2, or 3 chassis car will fit, including the GTI. For extra headroom, find some corrado seats, they sit really low in the car.
Also you can fit say 1.9tdi engine in it, but that does mean with 1.3-1-6l models that you need to replace front suspension parts, sub frame? and obviously wiring harness needs to be spliced from two cars to work on this, but its duable just bit hard. End result you get newer engine with more power. 1.3-1.6L, 1.8-2.0L, 2.2-3.0 are essentially part fittings so 1.8L engine fits to any gearbox in that scale with out major modifications, should be bolt on and this applies all the way to 2000 models, not sure about new shit, but that is shit so we dont talk about it.
These were great trucks! My friend’s dad had a Diesel Caddy he used as a commuter vehicle. He got 45-50 MPG! Top speed was only 55-60 MPH, though. Still, a very practical vehicle. I look forward to more videos about this truck.
Look forward to seeing this run. License Plate Frame says Steven's Creek Dodge in San Jose. I use to live 6 blocks from there!!! Checkout Matt on Diesel Creek. He just rescued one of these with a VERY NASTY interior and he lives in Western Pennsylvania ...so RUST BELT! . But his Air Filter was in place so the Mice didn't get into intake and he got the engine going pretty quickly.
My brother in law had a VW Rabbit with a similar, maybe even the same engine. He drove it for years then loaned it to my Mom and she drove it until she couldn't drive anymore then he drove it again. 3 or 4 engine rebuilds. Super reliable little car. I only worked on the starter cause Mom was stuck in Indiana and I went down to help. Starter was right up front and easy to reach. Pulled the Bendix and flipped the copper washer over so it made contact again. The starter motor might still be on it. Great find. If nothing else it will be worth putting the time in it. 😁😁😎😎

It's about the only thing that won't eat aluminum but eats rust.
Molasses is high in sulphur. With water likely forms a mild sulphuric acid solution.
