This episode was partially inspired by "The Cove" and the show "Whale Wars" which Trey and Matt had to watch before doing the episode. When they did, they saw how awful of a show it was when it came to stretching and building things and just thought "Wow, this is a show of nothing happening and them trying to make an hour of TV out of it".
That final punchline kills me every time.... This is my top SP because the ridiculous lengths they take the premise to makes that punchline hit that much harder, it's perfect. Also, Cartman singing poker face is heaven in my ears. Lmao
Interesting fact. If they had used Poker Face, they would’ve had to pay quite a bit of money. So Matt and Trey just asked GaGa if they could use the song for free and she said yes.
I always just thought they'd parodied the song just enough that they would barely avoid copyright legal issues, not that they actually asked her permission lol.
If you want to watch another Japanese themed episode (also co-themed with the Chinese), you have to give "City Sushi" a try. It's also a Butters episode as well!
I just subscribed and I was just going to say that haha One if not the most funny episode for me. Top 3 easy. Would be hilarious to see Dash's reaction with the twist(s)! hahaha Just thinking about that episode always makes me laugh.
I found it hilarious that you mentioned how different Stan looks without his hat on! I work for a major ski resort in CO overnight. All of my coworkers usually dress in layers, and when I get to see them in public without our usual gear on, it completely catches me off guard. I usually don’t recognize some of my coworkers at first in street clothes.
Aside from the twist and Cartman’s snickering, I appreciate how their description of the horrors of Hiroshima’s fallout is played almost completely straight and treated with the seriousness and respect it deserves.
It's funny how japanese like to make themselves look like as if they are oppressed while in fact they slaughtered millions in the whole east asia and south east asia
Man I love that you are churning out the full south park episode reactions. Keep em coming, you make them so enjoyable! Watching this one, already exited for the next one! Love from Switzerland
Another great reaction! I'm not sure about other Japanese-themed episodes of South Park, but the double feature episodes in King of the Hill when they visit Japan is absolutely hilarious, full of cultural misunderstandings. They're called Returning Japanese I believe. Can't recommend them highly enough. Keep up the good work Dash :)
That sudden Larry King is still my favorite part of this episode, it's spot on and hilarious 7:34 And yeah, whale hunting is only "wrong" because we can't factory farm whales.
For the first time in over 15 years I actually learned something from a youtube video... The Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the US... but not the word.
The ending was by far the best part with the twist realization that nothing they have ever done to whales or dolphins is any better or worse then what we do to cows and chickens
Well one is eaten and the other is wasted and if they do eat it, they are likely to get mercury poisoning. The key thing is to not let the animal suffer or be killed for unnecessary reasons, like for fur or oil. Meanwhile in farms they use everything to try make the most money. The factory farms are the problem with chickens, cows and pigs. Those are very inhumane and horrific. There are only a few native groups that need to eat whale meat and use their blubber to survive but most of that is up north, so outside that whaling is rather immoral. But yeah we need to treat both farm animals and whales better. Sorry if I went on a bit of a rant there, the wildlife biologist in me just really enjoys talking about animals.
The key difference is that we breed cows and chickens specifically for eating, whaling has already driven some species of whale to extinction and has endangered others.
@etsap1236 Not true at all dude. Dolphins and whales are eaten in plenty of countries, not just Japan. Japanese fishing vessels typically obtain whales and dolphins under “scientific pretenses,” but kill them and harvest their meat so it “doesn’t go to waste.” Plenty of Scandinavian countries still eat shark, whale, dolphin, etc. The Faroe Islanders still hunt whales and dolphins. There’s nothing wrong with eating that meat as long as it’s being obtained sustainably, which is arguable in the case of Japan, but absolutely the case with the Faroe Islands.

Trey Parker is married to a japanese woman(lucky bastard) and is a beginner/intermediate in japanese so there being some japanese in South Park isn't so strange
7:00 He says "tofu taberuna(豆腐食べるな)", which means "don't eat tofu". This line seems to be based on the fact that tofu is eaten as a healthy food in foreign countries, but as you say, I don't think that makes sense. Anyway I love funny Japanese words in South Park.
2:34-2:40 The fact that the football announcer just witnessed a massacre of a bunch of football players and just passes it off as all part of the game, makes it more comical.
"We were talking about Wales the country" Bahaha I didn't get that when I was younger, but I do now after getting more int geography. lol Insert dead skull here.
