    I think Adam needs to open a "Savage Industries Museum" where he stores, preserves and annotates his collection that is viewable by the public (for a fee, of course). The museum would give him an excuse to house his items in a separate space solely dedicated to maintaining and displaying his catalog of items and their history and relevance not only to Adam but also to the special effects industry as a whole. Could become a San Francisco tourist destination.

      I've always thought about this whenever he mentions other creators who have museum exhibits (often after they've passed, but no need to wait) - he exemplifies through his craft what he loves about those self-same people, and a travelling exhibit would be fantastic too

    When I built my dream hobby room I put oodles of shelves everywhere. And I would put things that were related to each other in small cardboard boxes. But it just did not work as intended to take each one down and root through it. After a visit to the Container Store I found open top clear plastic stackable containers that I love. I can see from across the room what’s in it. MicroMark has nice rolling airbrush air booths.

    Easy fix for the box is an adhesive backed foam seal strip around the top; you get that little bit of extra height required, and the cover will sit more tightly against it for a better dust seal.

    When I was a kid in the 80’s, the shoe store I went to used those foot measurers. I remember it clear as day, and how it used to tickle my foot when the salesman would measure my foot. I also remember this shoe store had a giant wooden bowl of pretzels for all the kids, and if memory serves correctly it was like a carved elephant bowl. Fun times, NYC, 1985-90

    I like the idea of a "materials store" area separate from the workshop area. It is easier to use the tools and machines, and clean up afterwards, without so much storage collecting dust and chips. There are some tools which would be best stored away in a "tool crib" (delicate or infrequently used), and some materials kept in the workshop (frequently used, or to be used up first).
    I also like the concept of using a "hallway" or "aisle" for this sort of thing, for good access. It is less of a "place where things go to die" or get lost under/behind a pile of other stuff.

    Our town museum uses a software for accessioning artifacts called "Past Perfect" I bet that program or a similar one would be amazingly valuable and time-saving in cataloging your collection. All the things you mentioned detailing about your objects is the same information we try to preserve about all our objects. I have started using it to catalog my collection at home for the same reasons you list. At very least it would benefit you to use the standardized numbering system for museum accessioning in your collection while you build your database. Thanks for sharing all these videos! they are enjoyable and inspiring.

    My "lists" are mostly based around my primary love, which is D&D (Dungeons and Dragons). Nothing in my lists has a substantial value outside the people that I game with, but within that circle- given that I am almost always the GM- there is a ton of value to anyone who might want to run a game in the setting I have built up over the last 15 years or so... This ranges from basic generic info like map icons, all the way down to to tiny granular details like the appearance and name of city guards and shopkeepers. For most people this is useless info, but for someone who wants to run a D&D game set on a mountain plateau floating in a magical bubble outside the boundaries (and limitations!) of normal reality, it could be a priceless asset.

    i have been organising my grand fathers old house, car parts, tools etc, for a couple of months now. i occasionally found a small list of things the could be of valve. but i have no idea what they actually were or look like. The only way to ensure that the most valuable or precious thing you have in your life, that you want to have carried on for others to enjoy etc. you have to label each item and also have a description of what it is etc, and keep it with the item itself. print it out and than laminate it so it won't get destroyed. i know it may not seem very practical, but actually having had spend months help organizing things and spending the time working out what those things are. i was able to save a lot of things that otherwise would have been thrown away if someone else came in and didn't know what some of the things are. also i found don't store things in carboard boxes if you can, over time they just deteriorate and make a mess when they crumple. or wrap them in a plastic bag. it just causes things to rot or rust, they just become useless junk. invest in good storage systems if you can. even for your own peace of mind, cause it makes things much easier to find later and gives you much more sense of pride for your workspace, knowing that it is far more organized.

    Adam!!!! You don't have to rebuild the sides of the collet stand at all. In fact, the solution will actually seal out any dust from getting inside. refrigerator seal! It stands plenty tall enough so the plexiglass will clear the collets and if you get the magnetic type, you can simply place 16 gauge strips of steel to the wood frame and stick the seal to the plexiglass. Kills two birds with one stone. No need to rebuild and added benefit of a great dust seal. Cheers! Zip~

    This topic hit close to home, my dad had a lifetime's accumulation of useful tools, nothing super valuable, just useful good quality stuff, Yankee screwdriver bits, specialised sockets, even down to really good radiator keys. After he died the extended family descended to "help" with stuff around the house in the following weeks. There was stuff that needed to be dumped, broken things, works in progress and some bits that were kept for projects that would never happen. I was away at college doing exams to find that we'll meaning people who had just never lived in our house had chucked a legacy in a skip, while infuriatingly diligently storing boxes of mostly trash because they didn't know what they were rooting through. Still to this day a decade later I still go looking for things I know we had forgetting that it's gone. I don't blame them but it still sucks. TLDR, label your shit if you want people to get use out of it after you're gone

    Ooooo I have a tip for those that have a fear of throwing things away that might be useful in the future.
    Keep a trash bin that only CLEAN things go in and only take it out every month or two or three. If you come up with a use for something, you know exactly where it is. If it's been in the trash for more than 3 months, you wont miss it after the 4th. Nothing dusty and nothing food related, so if you DO have to go digging, it's not gross.
    I used to have a real problem throwing out harvested electronic components and shiny glassware. A clean trash can has absolved most of my hoarding tendencies. I've got one for the garage too.

You search and search, turn everything over, finally give up and find a replacement, after which you find it (giggling at you way over in the corner of the room).

    Adam as a fan, but also as someone who works in IT, I must be very frank. Holding inventory in a spreadsheet is a monumentally stupid idea that you will regret. It needs to be in a database. At least Microsoft Access, but with your inventory, it would be criminal not to put it into an honest-to-god RDBMS (Relational Database Management System). Find a database admin who can help you, Spreadsheets are for crunching numbers, and as a secondary function, making tables and graphs. You are always saying use the right tool for the job. Software is no different. USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB! I don't want to get all in your face about this, but I have seen too much data be destoyed because someone thought using a spreadsheet for inventory management was a good idea.

      Why would anyone every use a database directly? There are tons of apps if spreadsheet isn’t sufficient.

      So you are saying I can’t make a simple list with 2 columns that would work? 1 column with the tool names and the 2nd column with its home, wherever it is is my shop)?

    • @joshuawalker7054
      @joshuawalker7054 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dunkeyhote Like I said, Access is one of them, but you have to consider scalability. I have not been in Adam's shop, but just by way of what has been filmed, he has commecial-level amounts of.... *stuff* So much so, even Access my have a probelm with the amount of metadata. (accb files have a 2GB limit). There are plenty of frent ends. Heck pgAdmin (for Postgres) has some pretty easy input and lookup tools if set up by and admin, and you can plug Access into that via ODBC.

    • @joshuawalker7054
      @joshuawalker7054 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sambenao7 That's a simple table, there is no issue with that. I even listed that as a thing Spreadsheets can do. However, to manage Adam's inventoy, I can easily see mutiple tables with thousands of rows, and mutiple data types (serial numbers, text, pictures, dates) Just makes more sense to put it into a database. Maybe with an Access front end, or Infopath if the DB admin feels so inclined. That may be a touch much though. Making a web app front end may be overkill.

    I know from experience that sawdust producing machines and oily machines like mills aren’t a good combination. I’m a bit surprised that you have your table saw so close to your mill with no apparent dust collection.

      Sounds like a job for a summer intern. Dictate an audio file of what you can remember in a verbal download and turn the project over to an eager intern with the patience for data entry. Museum quality tags with barcode labels would also help. Ooh! - RF tags also.

    I can understand the appeal of Excel or Evernote, but Adam should really archive his precious items by writing them down in his own version of an Indiana Jones note book. List the item's information, and then sketch out a quick picture of them item. This notebook in of it self could then be weathered and be a functional piece of his display.

    Can you braje/bend lexan(acrylic) in a metal brake? I need to build a cover kind of like your collet cover but I need to bend the sides down and form a lip. I was thinking I could put 1/8 think material in my brake and use a mapp/propane torch to slowly heat as I bent a 90° lip.
