    Calling out the people who flip pinball machines but you are doing the same with Magic products and cards. Manipulating the market all the time. Thanks to people like you Magic the Gathering is now more like the stock market and not the trading card game we loved. The reserved list and people like you are the worst thing that ever happend to it.

      Always has been. I despise Rudy for buying old school cards like he's a seller when he states hell never sell alpha, beta, unlimited or the four horsemen. He rips people off when buying these vintage cards. He should always buy these cards at market price.

      Interesting POV. I got out of magic because WOTC overprinted everything and made some of my cards worthless and it was bumming me out. If it's bumming you out then get out. Simple. If you're still spending money on something that isn't making you happy then that's a problem you'd need to process within yourself. There's better things to spend your money on imo. I still love following the story though, which is free. 😅

    It sounds like you're talking about my friend Issac. He's like 40 something. He played magic a few times as a kid. But never got into it. But he wanted to play with my group one day. Hes been playing now for about 2 to 3 months. He's got his entire family playing this game. He's buying decks and boxes and singles. He's got his kids saving up their chore money to buy new cards. He's probably spent about $5000 by himself in 3 months. It's wild lol

    Been in the Pinball market as a buyer since 2016. The issue just wasn't in cardboard... it was in every hobby - statues, pinball, watches, cars, guns, PS5 lol you name it... the same behavior was across the board in all hobbies

  • @MilkWasABadChoice17
    @MilkWasABadChoice17 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    It's even more wild that so much is peaking again now (collectibles, stocks, crypto, even real estate in select areas), but interest rates aren't going down. It feels like market manipulation across the board and the ones holding the bags at the end of it are gonna get screwed.

    All psychology. Hasbro was truly effective in pissing us all off, consumers called their bluff, voted with their wallet. Hasbro pivoted, consumers slowly started trusting again, now we're all like a bunch of dudes after no-nut novemeber just going after everything.

      I haven't played Magic for years and then got roped back into it over the past few months because my friends all play commander. You are quite right about the psychology and how much pissing people off will drive them away from spending or even interacting with any products a company makes. Voting with your wallet really is the best way to change a company.

      With so many reprints of certain cards, I have seen $30.00 cards go down to $2.00. Hasbro / Wizards is ruining the collectability of a lot of the cards. The box prices are so ridiculous now and the card quality is really bad. Chris Cocks is the puppet master for Wizards pulling all of the strings. Magic is a great card game but is it really worth it to spend thousands of dollars for a couple of boxes from each new set? I don't think so.

    I have a home arcade, that boom and bust of pinball machines was weird. My experience has been more people in the pinball world would rather trade machines then pay full value. Collectors do exist, and buying your first Nib machine is awesome. I know you have a mechanics background so repairs might come easy, but parts are getting stupid.
    That Pirates of the Caribbean pinball boom was insane to watch as it happened.

    It's because of macro economic liquidity cycles. Bear and Bull markets across all risk on assets move in tandem based on whether central banks are raising or lowering interest rates

  • @uhrich11
    @uhrich11 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Other considerations...I sold the lowest performing/most abused items (ie collector boxes) to shift money into savings and money markets, respectively 4.5 and 5.5 percent and I'm happy I did. Pretty much zero risk, more liquid, and most important, making me monet right now...not in the unknown future.
    The Amazon dumps saw a drop off in price for collector boxes that requires this massive recovery we're now hearing about to roar forward for years just for me to break even. I kept my graded reserve cards, but modern product is simply too much risk vs the free money created by these interest rates. It's not all people who just don't know/don't get it/don't have faith or vision, some of us can just to math and see which assets will make me money on paper the fastest with the least downside risk.
    Thanks for the vids.

    The reality is that we're experiencing these "black swan events" more and more frequently. I am a millennial that was born in 1982. My generation has had to live through 6 major depressions recessions. Sure there have been depressions and recessions before, but all 6 of these were greater than what was even thought possible previously. Even The Great Depression, as they call it was surpassed by the Depression in 2008. We've got people who are in charge, who are supposed to be making very important decisions, Acting in ways that do not serve the best interests of the people. These people who are allegedly in charge will run our economy into the ground and the government will continue to bail them out, meanwhile, the people end up paying for it and so there's really no consequence to being so careless. The housing bubble exploded and millions lost their home and instead of learning from it, they just found other ways to prioritize profits and now it's going to happen again. The housing market is unsustainable as it is. Homes selling for 2-3x what they were selling for less than a decade earlier. More and more people completely blocked from the housing market, spending insane amounts on temporary housing due to prohibitively expensive houses.
    Food is more expensive than ever
    Water is more expensive than ever
    Shelter is more expensive than ever
    Medical Care is more expensive than ever
    These "black swan events" are becoming more common and will continue to get more common and until we start learning how to recognize them, we'll just be kicking the can down the road.

      I agree with your disdain for money printing, but it appears the strength of the US Dollar as increased generally over time at least since 2021, so that can't actually be the cause of the inflation in collectibles prices, or I guess you might say, at least less so here than it would be in other countries comparatively.

    I had a negative experience when I decided to support. The boxes weren't what I thought they'd be, but I decided to buy 2 and cancel my patreon. Instead of honoring the sale, Rudy cancelled and refunded the order. So I essentially paid him $15 for nothing.
    Not saying Rudy's a bad guy, but his business practices are not great. If you want draft boxes and are willing to pay $15 a month for $89 boxes, then you might have a good experience in the long run. But if you sign up and realize you won't want to continue, you'll probably be out of luck

    The swing in value is a wealth transfer, its been in the works for a while now on higher levels by our "parents" which basically have control of most important functions of most important governments. It is very difficult to be able to take advantage of a wealth transfer for most people, this is because the main tactic is to make basic needs very expensive. So the majority of people can not use their capital on anything other than basic needs. Basic needs - food (getting more expensive every month) - Transportation (getting more expensive every month still) - Housing (getting more expensive every month) just to list a few. So I may not understand the MTG market nearly as well as Rudy, but I understand exactly what is going on here.

Right now major online suppliers are have to liquidate a lot of these assets as they over predict the demand and in responses to the manufacturers have been making *wink wink* New models (that are basically exactly the same) at a higher price point to keep th margins seem as good.

      All the music stores are struggling with too much product and no buyers. All the Lgs are going to have same problem. They've all been hoarding sealed product so they can be the next Open Boosters in 20 years. But there's just waaaay too much product for that to happen. The only Sets where open boosters style profit is going to be possible is Pre TH-cam sets, and everyone has collectively decided that that market is overpriced and it's stalled. Hence no reserve list. In twenty years millenials will be dead or homeless and there will be no nostalgia for Homelands. Gen Z doens't give two craps about Homelands.

Yes there will be one or two success stories coming out of this collapse like the subprime but everyone's belief that they are going to come out on top is just like the NFT timmies. Everything runs on 20 year cycles. This is MTG's twenty year cycle. Comic books had a new 20 year cycle as well but it wasn't as big. Why? Because the first 20 year cycle happened in the 90's. But during that boom everyone was keenly aware that "comics had value" So people bought and bought and bagged an boarded right away and was over printed. So this cycle, any comic from the 90's was still incredibly affordable because they were over printed and looked after. Only the comic books pre 90's boom saw any real increase in value because they were actually rare from a time when comics weren't considered valuable. The pokemon and MTG boom this time around was about the original cards that 90's parents threw away or weren't looked after because children don't know how to look after things. But twenty years from now there's going to be a million Collectors boosters and the value isn't going to be there because 60's year olds aren't going to play MTG or pokemon anymore and getting the cards will be easy because it's over printed and everyone wore gloves and sleeved the cards at all times. The sneaker market is millennials. Gen Z has no nostalgia for Air Force Ones. They weren't even born yet. Gen Z never played arcade games. There is no nostalgia for them from Gen Z.
      If you want to make money twenty years from now, find out what Gen Z and younger generation actually liked, (Not liked because there was money in it) and buy that stuff. So in twenty years when their kids move out and they have disposable income they'll want to relive their childhood, and you can sell them whatever they lost/ruined or missed out on. Go buy rare fidget spinners? Probably not fidget spinners but you get the idea. A fad that was huge that kids don't care about much anymore where the majority of the product is either thrown away or lost or ruined, and collect that so you can resell it when they get money again.
      Rudy is a distributer. He's not your friend. He makes money by you guys having fomo. The point is trying to educate the Timmies so they don't ruin the global market and force everyone else to bail them out. I don't want to have to buy MTG singles off homeless people every day instead of giving change.
      You got to know when the hold them, but more importantly you got to know when to fold them. This is the point in the bubble where we find out who's left holding the bag. WoTC is desperate that's whey they are releasing more and more, shiny things to try to keep the bubble up. But not all that glitters is gold.

    Question time. How does it relate to the housing market? Has it gone in a similar manner, or is it floser to 2007 or 08? They talk about 7 year trends of climbs to market flops... Does it seem to follow?

    Well WotC put out numerous subpar sets that rode the coattails of select reprints, rather than releasing a product that could stand on its own 2 feet. Now they finally released a product that does the latter and it’s so expensive that they don’t have to even sell that much in order to make massive profit. It costs them the same to produce MH3 as it does Markov (fancy collectors commander sets aside). It’s sort of like Lamborghinis. They don’t have to sell too many Lambos in order to turn profit. Also, investors are responsible for skewing prices. Without these “investors” these products would have taken a massive price cut years ago. They also would have been forced to upscale the quality and offer bigger bang for your buck. Secret Lairs are a good example of this. If mostly just players were buying them, we would’ve had far better cards in them as they initially had started. Instead just the opposite happen. After the LotR SLD there should’ve been a massive nose dive in SLD sales but there wasn’t. So thank you “investors” for making these products so damn inflated.

    I have a feeling Outlaws of Thunder Junction is selling more than any magic set has in the past decade yet all we ear from TH-camrs is that they are tired of Wizards doing niche themed sets. This was the home run wizards was looking for.

    There's probably a correlation to CPI and the reserve list and another aspect sealed products getting opened and/or sold when people don't have money to go out. So moving into a recession reserve list goes down and sealed boxed products might go up, something like that. Then Timmys cousin is like you know I'm kind of tired of this game I'm thinking about buying a pinball machine. The bust isn't here yet, the same is true of bitcoin, because when the rates are high, liquidity dries up and eventually Timmy is broke again. Where's the rest of the Hasboro product lines at? Why is wizards the flagship, it's just a matter of time. There's too many conflicts of interest.
