Obviously color pie breaks are going to be powerful and popular; they let you do something you shouldn't. Citing popular cards in eternal formats is a terrible way to find precedent.

Just finished this series, this is super helpful! I’ve been wanting to make a one piece themed set for a while now and this is giving me the springboard to start

I think another good example is Show and Tell/Braids, Conjurer Adept/flash in blue. In more modern card design it’s a Green or Red effect but because it includes artifacts/enchantments/is grouphug in the case of braids/show, it’s allowed to break the color pie.

Yeah, I think that's true. You could make an argument that putting cards directly into play is kind of a pseudo omniscience ability, so maybe it is in blue's pie, but I'm not sure if that holds up

@@StrataGames I disagree if that's because as recently as brothers war blue was still having show and tell effects. If it is a break it's only because it allows for lands.

I actually enjoy designing cards that use another color's mechanics but still fulfills its own goals. I don't think these are breaks because I'm not giving the color something it doesn't already have access to.
For example, a spell that costs XR and gives target create -0/-X. Red has plenty of cards that deal X damage, and it has a few cards that get though indestructible. So this card doesn't really do anything that Burn from Within doesn't do, except for some fringe cases.
Other times, I focus more on the feel of the color. For example, white should not get ramp that puts it ahead of other players. However, white is okay with leveling the playing field. Maybe white can get ramp as long as your opponent controls more lands than you. I'll admit, this one is a little more suspect, as a lot of white more "balanced" focus cards came out in the early days. There aren't as many resent examples.

ah yes, blasphemous act, the unfair red card that can't kill indestructible creatures, creatures with protection from red, creatures with toughness over 13, or probably any creatures at all when the number of creatures in play isn't more than like 4. better complain about it being a color break today even though realistically in the game it is not without its weaknesses and is less intrusive than pretty much any other boardwipe for a similar amount of mana.

When did I say unfair or that it didn't have weaknesses lol

@@StrataGames the video's existence implied it.

@@StrataGames it also goes leaps and bounds that you don't mention anything else that red has that also does a very similar thing to blasphemous act while costing a minor amount of additional mana, like chain reaction and Earthquake , or alternate cost like devastating dreams, and nahiri's wrath. these too are damage based, but essentially play the same as a destroy all creatures spell.
you go straight from "here's blasphemous act, its essentially just a board wipe for 1, so 100 damage for 1 is also pretty much the same thing, here's an obvious color pie break with a red murder that does damage equal to the creatures toughness that I am also comparing blasphemous act to"
Like its ok to get upset about a card, but if you want a full discussion be sure to be clear about that.

Your incorrect assumptions don't mean I implied anything

Didn't realize I needed to reference every single color pie break in red to talk about one, but since you're so interested:
Chain Reaction is a break. Maro has said so himself.
Earthquake isn't a break because it's not "a minor amount of additional mana" it would literally be a total of 14 mana to do the same as blasphemous act.
Devastating Dreams/Nahiris Wrath: The higher the damage, the higher the cost, whether that's a cost of mana or other resources, like discarding cards, it doesn't make it a color pie break. The problem is getting too much damage for such a minor cost.
You're the only one getting upset lol
