The plant is Equisetum, aka horsetail. It’s not a grass. It’s actually a really ancient form of plant that reproduces via spores rather than seeds. Some call it a living fossil. And yes, they are super hard on the skin. 😕 Loving these Gila videos!!!

That segmented grass like plant is a type of equisetum probably E. robustum. Commonly called scouring-rush, for obvious reasons. Enjoy the access to all that water after the desert, even as cold as it is.

At least you didn’t have to strip down and swim across an ice cold or colder stream like in Sierras. Getting a bit hot sticky and buggy here in Massachusetts. Trail drying out but not as dry as your AT in 2022. Water still flowing not just stagnant in puddles. Happy trails, and you got to hike in some trees again. 😎

That is a bonus. It wasn't a repeat of Stubblefield Creek 🥶

Al, I cannot imagine crossing anything so many times and then walking in wet shoes for the rest of the day, but that's why I am here and you are there! The scenery around you is absolutely beautiful, thank you so much for sharing this incredible adventure.
