Thanks Joe! I recently chose to use a drum loop in a song, which forced me to use this technique on the drum track. I was surprised how I was able to use compression and EQ to shape the sound of the kit, just as you showed here. I also like to use the drums to "widen" my mix sound, so I used Studio One Binaural Pan to increase the width. Finally, some distortion or saturation can add to the track, too.

I prefer top down mixing, saves on the work the processor has to do, which can slow down your computer. I have achieved better results with top down mixing than bottom up.
Lessons are great! Keep up the good work.

Currently mixing a record using this method and really digging it. When would it not work though? Certain Genres I'm assuming?

Hi Joe, I'm having a problem getting my folders to close and open in the mix view. At 10:48 where you're opening and closing folders in the mix view mine don't close. They open and close in the tracking view but in the mix view they just stay open. How can I close the folders so I can mix just my main folders (Busses)? Thank you!

So the goal is to get the best sound, with the most minimalistic mentality. One step at a time instead of going insane and ruining the sound

Hmm... 10 minutes and we 'just' used a single compressor on the drum buss? I guess I use a combo of Top-Down and Bottom-Up. :-)

haha 50 tracks. Remember most of the iconic great mixes pre DAW only had 8 -24 tracks. You mention over mixing as an issue, but over tracking is an even bigger cause of bad mixes. Like having too many spices in a recipe until it has no unique character, many people just record too many tracks that get in the way of the song. Using too many plugins is often the result of poor recording technique.
