You actually can technically kill the ghost in Spelunky - it has 9999 HP and only takes damage from passing through a lava pool. You may have already done a vid like this, but if not, a good candidate for "7 supposedly 'unkillable' enemies that were surprisingly mortal, in the end"

I wouldn't call it surprisingly killable. If it takes 15 seconds to make the slow moving ghost pass through a lava pool, it'd take over 41 hours to kill it.

The music slowing in Spelunky isn't a 30 second warning; it slows when the ghost spawns. You can spend as long as you like on a level as long as you can continue to outmaneuver the ghost. This is a strategy used for high score runs as gems are converted to more valuable diamonds when the ghost passes over them.

Interesting note about the Necrodancer trapdoors, if you're playing as Aria, Coda, or Dove, it just murders you. Aria and Coda, because trapdoors count as missed beats, and Dove dies for "Cowardice." There's an old arcade game called "Prisoner of War". Fairly standard side-scrolling beat-em-up with an interesting gimmick. The gimmick is that if you don't move on when the game tells you to move on, after a while four riflemen appear from the left of the screen and simultaneously fire their weapons to the right, killing you instantly. The interesting bit is that these guys actually count as regular enemies. Meaning that you can kick them and obtain the most powerful weapon in the game in the first room, assuming your timing is good enough.

Communities get overrun by supermutants one after the other until you win. Take long enough, and every town is dead.

Not only does it have a visible timer of 150 days in order to get the water chip, but it also has a hidden 500 day timer before your vault is invaded. I see indications that the second may have been removed in later patches if you don't pay for a caravan to supply your vault with water (a way to extend the first timer), though .

If you take too long outside your ship, you start to hear turmoils, and then a monstrous roar (I was scared shi*less first time I heard it). If you take even more time, you will finally witness a giant whale chasing your characters.
However, while the Beruberu (the whale's name) *is* the strongest enemy in the game, the game itself is *very easy.* It even literaly says this to you, when you pick the difficulty level: "Haven is *not* a difficult game". So Beruberu ends up being a scarier tale, than he is in person.

Not sure if this counts but in Starbound, you need fuel to do jumps in the galaxy. To get fuel you can buy it at a very over priced rate or you can go find some yourself. To find such fuel you need to visit any moon and start digging for fuel ore or bountiful pools of liquid fuel. But be careful while digging down into the dark depths because an Erchius ghost is slowly creeping up on you. It is invincible and if it reaches you, it will rapidly drain your energy so you can't dash away and your health so you are pretty much dead. You can constantly run away from the ghost and collect more and more fuel. But the more fuel you gather, the faster the ghost becomes. Another thing to keep in mind is that you cannot beam up to your ship while underground so hopefully you have a good escape plan to get out of your cave and not get lost in whatever cavern you fell into. If you are thinking about digging your way out, you might as well run into the ghost, because digging out of the depths would take far too long before the ghost will get you. Once you find your way out of the caverns, you can safely teleport back to your ship and get on with your adventure.

In games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Persona with randomly generated levels, it makes sense to have a sort of timer to push you along. As a bonus, Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter also has a time-limit based mechanic despite being a turn-based RPG. Just moving around increases your D-Counter very slightly, you can use some special moves in exchange for increasing this counter further, but if that counter hits 100%, it's game over (unless *spoiler* happens), forcing a restart to NG+ where you get sent back to the start of the game, but with everything you had before.
Of course, the thing is, the game-over state is you turning into a dragon. Which is while awesome, also leaves you not human unfortunately. (also apparently pretty bloody and painful)

I think the L4D games deserve a mention here, once you leave the saferooms, the games pretty well made director AI system starts up, spawning zombies, idling zombies, hordes of zombies, special zombies, and on some occasions, a super brutal and dangerous zombie called a tank. This zombie by the way can easily destroy the saferoom door, providing a deathly experience to any players who happen to be camping out in these now very unsafe rooms. Even if you just progress rather slowly you still put yourself at more risk than is necessary. Its not much to worry about if you play the game normally but the game does not take kindly to people who dawdle.

try othercide. It's a tactical Roguelite with turnbased combat were you command a small group of elite fighters who level up and gain traits from doing missions. There is a missiontype where you have to fight through to a specific (tanky) enemy who channels a spell that instantkills everything if not stopped beforehand.
While you can revive dead Teammembers with a specific token (which you can gain 1 of each time you finish an escort mission) they drop all memories (sort of their gear just that you can't produce it but only gain it as randomized loot) and since enemies (especially bosses) can be pretty harsh and there is no option to heal your soldiers (even between missions) besides sacrifying another, higher level Teammember to heal a lower one (well there is an easy mode where all teammembers also heal 50% of their max hp per day, but who plays on easy?) you usually save those for your best troops / for after the hard boss fights.

The Infection in Outbreak reminds me of the D-Counter in Breath of Fire 5. Essentially, after a certain plot point early in the game, the main character Ryu awakens the powers of a dragon, but everytime you use them, this omni-present D-Counter fills up. If it reaches 100% before the final fight of the Game, you get a unique and actually quite gruesome Game Over. Even if you don't make use of the various Dragon Powers, the Counter still slowly fills up (like 0.01% for every 10 or 15 steps taken), making you choose carefully when, where and how you use them. This was made because Dragon Form in BoF 5 is STUPIDLY powerful, and would make the game an absolute cakewalk if you could use it with reckless abandon.

The Pokemon one reminded me of the reaper monster in Chocobo's dungeon 2 and Chocobo's dungeon Everybuddy. If you take too long, you get a similar warning but instead of wind, you start to see the horrible creature start to stalk you slowly... and you can't flee it.

Shenmue's is the most brutal time limit as in that it's a complete game over with no path forward. If your save game is in a place where you don't have enough days left to finish, you have no option other than to start over from the beginning.

I am really surprised, then, that I didn't get murdered in Shenmue, as I absolutely loved playing those arcade games and getting little figures. I guess I paced my gameplay a lot better than I thought I did.

What about Binding of Issac. In a game with hundreds of items and challenges ans secrets that you may still be googling hundreds of hours in, it punishes you by locking you out of some challenges, bosses, and endings if you don't move through the levels pretty hastily

Because not only will you go hungry you will eventually die from old age and put back into the starting hub if you take too long

In Zone Raiders, once the timer runs out, the game spawns a seemingly indestructible enemy hovercraft that chases you down and kills you in a couple of shots. The skinny is that the hovercraft in question is actually flying rather than simply hovering, making it difficult to evade it.

Wouldn’t the entire DeadRising series be on this list? There are MULTIPLE punishments for taking your time, such as many missions failing, someone turning into a zombie because they didn’t get their zombrex on time, or missing the crucial main missions that cause either missing the helicopter rendezvous, or the military bombing the infected zone with you and others still in it.

That's part of what I hated about FF8. You could only attain a certain Seed rank, but if you took too long it knocked you down a rank, which was impossible to build back up. So you'd permanently lose rank if you took too long. F that game.

A more recent suggestion for a game that fits with this premise! Cult Of The Lamb! Sure, the dungeons are full of important resources that can help to bolster your cult's influence and stability, but completely ignore your cult to go on dungeon dives, and lots of bad stuff can happen while you're taking your time. Followers can get sick, starve, and dissent, as well as straight up die. If you go below a certain number of followers, either because they leave or die, then the next death you have is PERMANENT. So make sure to not stay too long in the lands of the old faith, lest you lose your entire flock and your life.

There was ONE cool thing about Resident Evil Outbreak, back when you could play it online. As the T infection got greater, your character became more zombified. Thus, you could walk around like a zombie. Briefly, before you died. When you were a zombie you were no longer able to open doors.
    But, I was never able/wanted to finish Outbreak 1 & 2.
