Love this! Very relatable. I think you've seen my fortress of arrogance. That was the exact same story, built it when i was 16 when appocolypse was released and was unpainted for over a decade dusted off, cleaned it up did some conversion work and now its one of my most treasured possessions ❤
You reminded me that I got a Baneblade for Father's Day about 10 years ago and I've not built it yet... That can be my next project after I finish my current one.
This came out AWESOME! ❤ A recovery I did two years ago was finally painting an Eldar Vampire Raider my wife gave me for Christmas 18 years prior. I've always been intimidated by it, not knowing if I can paint it to a standard it deserves and how to furnish it with a flying stand. It took me two decades to get that sorted out. Now, I dedicated the painted model to my beautiful wife and am incredibly happy with it.
As someone who has worked around military vehicles for a large part of their career, I guarantee you they’re dirty like that 99% of their time in the field. Vehicles in places like Hawaii with tons of red dirty and clay have stains very similar to what you achieved with the pigments during field exercises
As fellow hobbyist and real life former tanker, I can assure you that this ammount of dust/ pigment is very close to reality. It comes down to the enviroment, but I imagine a dry, red ground can leave this beautiful behemoth looking exactly like this. Great Job!
Looks awesome, I'd have sworn Apocalypse was earlier than 2007, but even thinking that was 17 years ago is crazy 😮😮 I was going to suggest a Shadowsword to round out your super heavy detachment 🙂 As to what you're reading dictating the projects you're undertaking, I totally agree with you and realised it some time ago personally, so now I use the relationship in reverse - if I want inspiration to crack on with a particular project I'll listen to or watch something that relates to it to fire up my inspiration and get the creative juices flowing 😀
I'm all for it! Clean takes just don't hit right. My recommendation for the 4th would be to Octoblade it! I myself have three; 1 standard, 1 which is modular between the three assault variants, and the last is an Octoblade set up. Our local group is actually healthy and diverse enough that I have had the privilege to run all three several times. I won't lie, I actually don't have any in box projects, I try to keep my pile of shame minimal, but I do have a large gray army I need to work on, which for the past few months I've been doing while watching your videos for the inspiration.
Looks so good, Baneblades are rly cool looking. Fun kit to maybe look into, I know I'm gonna get it, but there is a Baneblades lighting kit from Small Scale Lights, it's an led lighting kit, and you can get a motor to make the turret turn, and the led in the barrel flashes to look like it's firing.
Andy your enthusiasm is infectious, and your skill is top-tier! I really enjoy watching you work, well done. The weathering treatment isn't as heavy-handed as you might have done, it looks great. Keep it up!
I scratch built a Leviathan with the VDR from way back. The base chassis is TWO Baneblade track sections cut to make a single track that's about double the length of a Baneblade. I even found a Warhound plasma cannon to make the main turret weapon (using a Baneblade turret, btw). My idea was to make it a Ryza command vehicle to lead a Baneblade detachment along with an armored company to back it all up.
More Super heavies!!! Love them. I have 3 Stormblades (painted) and 2 Shadowswords and a twin-barreld baneblade (with modified dakka) I used to have more, but I had to cut down... (And now I secretly want to have more once again ^^)
Mike Brooks's novels Ufthak novels gave me enough fluffy background to work past my anxiety for painting orks. I know everyone says that orks are easy because you can't really get them wrong, but for me that puts me somewhere between decision paralysis and the risk of making a vanilla ork (like having a Space Wolf without tails and fetishes). Now I have many ideas for an ork WAAAGH! With grot tanks too
A Stormhammer could be a good fourth one. You've got the Baneblade with the single turret, you've got the Stormblade with the large superstructure, you've got the Stormlord with the forward superstructure and open rear, and the Stormhammer could be included with the twin turrets. That way they all have a different body and are really distinct visually. Whatever you choose I hope you paint it up for the channel, it's great to see tanks getting attention!
Absolutely loved this video!! For me I wouldn’t put that much weathering powder on but that’s what I love about the hobby, each to their own! Things would look very boring if everyone did the same. It was a stunning paint job and looked awesome 😎👌
Really wonderful video Andy! Looking forward to seeing how you build out your super heavy detachment, that is something that I'm never really content with.... be great to see your ideas!
Pro Tip: Put overalls on if it gets really messy. I've got several old projects but I've actually been considering selling my old collection entirely. Those tanks are massive. I stopped playing 40K in 1998. I will be keeping an Ork freebooter captain I have. He's getting repainted. I also have a Leman Russ that needs to get repainted, so I'll be keeping that as well. I also need to find some new tracks as some of the old ones have fallen off.
Baneblade is the first 40k novel I ever read, I think. Fond memories, I started it on a ferry crossing to France to see my then girlfriend. It got pretty beaten up by the time i'd finished reading it, be it on a ferry, train or bus. Happy days! Been many, many years since I've read it. It's on the shelf at home now, looks worse for wear but it was a good read. Always promised myself I'd get a Shadowsword at some point after reading it, it's still on the 'to buy' list!
Awesome as usual. Baneblade is such a cool tank model. It's a shame the old Macharius tanks from forgeworld aren't around anymore. Those did look cool as hell. I did hope that Games Workshop would make those Into plastic instead of the Dorn tank.
Love it! And absolutely agree on whatever I'm reading inspiring me the buy, build, and paint. I was reading Master of Mankind for the Custodes lore and it inspired me to build a House Vyridion knights household to represent them in the war in the webway.
I did the recovery of an old project a few years ago. Metal blood bowl goblins from the late 90s early 2000s. Completely unpainted and unprimed when i recovered them from a drawer. So satisfying to paint those and get them on the pitch.
The Lore has always inspired the way I build armies or tackle the game. Even in the long years where i no longer really collected or played I still bought nearly every book as the setting is fantastic. I am currently building my teenage dream army of a Tau Farsight Battlesuit force though sadly i no longer have any of my old models
Definitely enjoy the synergy of building/painting models and listening to the matching media. I recently listened to all of the Eissenhorn and Ravener audio books with building the imperial combat patrol and the ordo hertiticus box.
Weathering powder, you do you! Looks great! For a parody short after the weathering power stage it should turn into a Blood Angels scheme lol. I’ve dug out my Ironjawz to show them some love
GLUE BOMB!! 😊😊😊 Actually not that bad. I remember my boys playing apocalypse when it kicked off - as with all their GW stuff, I built and painted it as I felt it was too expensive to leave it to 10 year olds. I feel guilty in retrospect but at least they have some half decent minis in the garage. I still want to redo that Stompa though.......
I also get pretty heavily influenced by what I’m reading. Two of my favorite 40k novels of all time are Cadian Blood and Double Eagle. Double Eagle especially inspired me to paint a thunderbolt.
The powder looks cool. It just feels rather specific like you'r invading Australia or Mars or something. It's not exactly mud, dust or something, but like dry red earth.
Fairly new to the hobby but I’m been listening to the Horus heresy books and I’m absolutely hooked on world eaters for some reason😂 went out and got a world eaters combat patrol and haven’t looked back. Definitely think my wife is sick of me talking about Warhammer 😂
Also, in Helsreach, Col. Sarin commanded a Baneblade named Grey Warrior. I rescued a Baneblade from eBay and I am currently converting it into Grey Warrior.
Thanks for sharing, Andy. I have a zip baggy with the parts for a Rogue Trader era Lander Raider. I've been putting off building and painting it for what, almost 40 years? I should finally build it.
A shadowsword would be a good fit for a Krieg army. From memory I think Baneblades, Shadowswords and Stormblades were the main superheavies the Krieg deployed to Vraks, with of course a bucketload of macharius tanks to make up the numbers in the superheavy regiments.
Oooh is that the Squidmar airbrush, it looks nice? I was inspired to start a Skaven army many, many years (about 3 decades, yikes) ago when I read the Konrad trilogy.
The weathering looks OK to me after the varnish. Have the idea in my mind now of a guard short story where a guard unit under siege finds an old battered tank in some ruins and has to fix it to escape.
You like it, you like it... but I would take the pigment powder and maybe either run a makeup brush on that, or an airbrush pure air and get it dispersed more otherwise it looks a bit artificial as is. Also a bit more tactical placement would be better IMO too, you should have WAY more on the bottom, and very light on the top. For my preference at any rate
Not sure what other tank to build next (though a Shadowsword in Kreig colours would look awesome), but whatever you do choose how about making it the 'command tank' for the detachment? could go hog wild on kitbashing for it.
Excellent job bringing this one back to life Andy, I personally like your weathering it suits Krieg well and when the whole force is so heavily weathered it looks good. I think it depends a lot on the army and their colour scheme, my blood bowl teams I always keep pristine like they would look coming out the tunnel to play, but they are usually bright colours and too much weathering on top of that just creates visual confusion. My iron warriors have very dirty boots because in my mind it’s near the beginning of their campaign so I keep their armour pristine-ish but they are set on a mars type radioactive red dust planet so just a couple steps in that environment and the boots would be a mess, so that’s what I do it ties them into the base makes them feel more lived in rather than a little statue. But end of the day it’s personal preference right our projects our choices no one else’s opinion matters. Keep up the good work. Oh and yes definitely a shadow sword with the volcano cannon every squad needs a heavy gunner even super heavy tank squads hehe.
I'm gonna yhave to get a bigger 3D printer I reckon. My Photon Mono has been fine up to now. Am looking at the Bambu Lab A1 for tanks etc. GW's prices for vehicles are simply ridiculous now.
I'd go a super heavy detachment with 4 individual variants... for the sole reason of bragging rights between crews from kills. From that you'd also gain the experience and knowledge of which tank is perhaps ultimately best..!!
I knew I wanted to get into 40K and just didn’t know what faction I wanted. Read Dante and The Devastation of Baal and knew right away Blood Angels were for me.
Praise be to the God Emperor ! ! ! His most holy golden light guided your way to the lost relic and return it to the service to he who sits upon the Golden Throne ! ! ! PRAIS BE ! ! !
Not criticizing, just reminding, you forgot to paint and detail the main gun rounds. Anyway, I am a 67 Y.O. kid who has been a 40k fan since it's inception. Main focus is Imperial Guard. I currently have 8 Baneblade variants built using the old Armorcast Baneblade/Shadowsword and the 2.0 Baneblade kits. 1 Shadowsword, 1 Stormhammer converted and kitbashed from the old Armorcast Baneblades following the old EPIC scale version, 1 original Baneblade and 2 Armorcast 2.0 kits. Also have an old style Plasma gun equipped Shadowsword conversion under construction and a bridge laying and heavy recovery Baneblades in the beginning phases. The Armorcast 2.0 was short lived but a nice remake consisting both resin and metal castings with better detail. When word leaked out way back when that Armorcast was loosing its right to make Warhammer kits I hit up every hobby and game store in the greater Sacramento area buying up the Armorcast kits. I also have 2 Reaver titans, 2 Warhound titans and had some of the mega Tyrranids that they made towards the end.
35 year old hobbyist, I changed to your style of painting from the more traditional Duncan style because I’ve got two kids now. Can’t spend hours doing highlights on standard infantry anymore, I’d ever have any hope of fielding a painted army! 😂
I was on board and supportive of the use of pigment powder... but then you showed the volume that you used and wow. It almost looks like a on inch line highlight everywhere on the tank. It was less over the top once you did the varnish though. Overall, the tank looks really good, thank you for sharing the video =)
7:21 In the HH novel where Magnus gets censured, he and Fulgrim walk between the legs of two gold plated Warlord titans belonging to the Emperor personally. When Adeptus Titanicus came out, my first legion was gold plated with red marble shoulder plates to make a Custodes legion. I was reading a King Arthur novel when assembling a large knight household for the same game and ended up making House Camelot. Led by King Arthur, my knights were all painted different colors and carried 28mm melee weapons. So much fun, I even made toothpick flags for each one to look like lances held high.
Andy you mentioned a decrease in patron and the only thing I can think is that the old world content has really dropped off. I was super enjoying that and is why I started (and continue to be) a patron.
Appreciate that man, I don't really know what happened with Old World, but doing something for it this week on the main channel! Will try work out more for that soon
Great video and result Andy. Do you know what size needle you use for your airbrush when painting tanks please? Looking to emulate the technique. Thank you
Looks great as always. The weathering powder for me doesnt look like rust but more that its been operating in a Mars like environment and its sand thats settled in the recesses.
Baneblades are ancient machines usually, this one for sure is a relic due to its irl history so millennia of service is gonna get it dirty, there is no overboard for imperial tanks
@johnnyutah892 Praise be to the God Emperor, His golden light guided the way to the lost relic to return it to the service of he who sits upon the golden throne.
Im torn with the red barrels. On one hand it just doesnt make sense for them to be any other colour. But on the other hand my years of videogames cant make sense of willingly painting such glaring weakpoints on a tank.
Some books inspire me, but sometimes it's the reverse; I'll have a project idea and then read as much as I can around that idea. Case in point, having bought Hivestorm, I'm trying to read as much about Stormtroopers and Elysians as I can!
You should make your 4th Super Heavy one of the troop variant Baneblades, carrying the support infantry for the detachment. If you love how it looks that's all that matters, a bit too much with the powder, some streaking grime would make it better IMO. Where's the Peekaboo commander?
Speaking of rescues from the island of misfit models, I'm painting my Bretonnian Prophetess on horse/warhorse. I got it in 2003, and I only recently stripped the old, terrible paint job.
I don't recall ever applying transfers to any of my Tyranids... 😜 EDIT: The clear coat helped knock it down a bit, but it was definitely too much pigment, IMO.
I have a slightly orkified stompa from 10 years, which I cannot paint at present due to damaged hands, cannot even hold a paintbrush and it's driving me nuts so frustrating
Love this! Very relatable. I think you've seen my fortress of arrogance. That was the exact same story, built it when i was 16 when appocolypse was released and was unpainted for over a decade dusted off, cleaned it up did some conversion work and now its one of my most treasured possessions ❤

Yess get it done!
The title was so funny because without the context it’s so brutal 💀
Hahahaha
Finally a proper scout tank division!
37 year old hobbyist gang. I've an old imperial navy BFG fleet that needs some love, repair and paint.
Would be amazing to paint this fleet
I envy you. I miss BFG and the models are so much fun to work on making glowing engines
If you're looking for some easy rules to get your space fleets on the table, I recommend the Void Admiral rules.
This came out AWESOME! ❤

Andy you keep smashing it out the park thanks for the trip down memory lane
I go the opposite way: when I'm hobbying on a certain project, I start seeking out books related to it.
Interesting way of doing it!
IT IS THE BANEBLADE!
Your commentary and sentiment inspire me to paint some old minis. Ive got an old world army of lizardmen that need some love.
That makes me happy to hear. Hope you share some pictures when you’re doing them.

Really like that idea of reading to get inspired. Thank you for that.
Dusting off models is incredibly therapeutic.
Great work Andy. Some paint chipping with a bit of sponge on all those hard edges would really give it a battle-worn look. Cheers.

Appreciate that man, I don't really know what happened with Old World, but doing something for it this week on the main channel! Will try work out more for that soon
Great video and result Andy. Do you know what size needle you use for your airbrush when painting tanks please? Looking to emulate the technique. Thank you
i have a baneblade and a stormlord and they are collecting dustbunnies!
Would a Crassus or Gorgon fit the Super Heavy detachment theme? Would make the Emperors meatiest Motor Rifle squadron
You have to have a Shadowsword if you have 4 Baneblade chassis tanks. Since you brought it up, 46 years old.
Looks great as always. The weathering powder for me doesnt look like rust but more that its been operating in a Mars like environment and its sand thats settled in the recesses.
Yeah that's the idea, it's not rust!
@MediocreHobbies mission accomplished then 😎
Just finished Yarrick.
He had a baneblade named Throne of Arrogance.
It was "void black" with a pulpit.
Guess whis model I am buildi g nezt . . .
Baneblades are ancient machines usually, this one for sure is a relic due to its irl history so millennia of service is gonna get it dirty, there is no overboard for imperial tanks
Throne ! ! ! You had one of the God Emperor's glorious BANEBLADES out of his most holy service for SEVENTEEN YEARS ? ! ?
Like a lost relic, recovered from a long forgotten planet, brought back to life and into the Emperors service.
@johnnyutah892 Praise be to the God Emperor,
His golden light guided the way to the lost relic to return it to the service of he who sits upon the golden throne.
Oh that's a good point too!
As a fellow treadhead my go to 40k book is Gunheads
Ohhh great choice!
Suprised you could afford a baneblade as a kid
You should make your 4th Super Heavy one of the troop variant Baneblades, carrying the support infantry for the detachment.
If you love how it looks that's all that matters, a bit too much with the powder, some streaking grime would make it better IMO.
Where's the Peekaboo commander?
I say it at the end that I didn’t have time to finish him for the video, he’ll be painted soon!
Speaking of rescues from the island of misfit models, I'm painting my Bretonnian Prophetess on horse/warhorse. I got it in 2003, and I only recently stripped the old, terrible paint job.
Oh good luck with her! Great model to bring back to life now!
Any recommendations as far as the sanding/clean up process after removing from the spru? What to sand with/grit type etc
I don't want to question your math here but 2007 was barely ten years ago!
Cries in getting old 😭
It was 17 yrs ago mate.
Twas sarcasm mate 😄
Love love love it
Thank you!
What are the 4 barrels on back? And why does evryone leave the seams?
Secondary fuel supply. And because they couldn’t be bothered.
I don't recall ever applying transfers to any of my Tyranids... 😜
EDIT: The clear coat helped knock it down a bit, but it was definitely too much pigment, IMO.
That's fair!
I have a slightly orkified stompa from 10 years, which I cannot paint at present due to damaged hands, cannot even hold a paintbrush and it's driving me nuts so frustrating
👍👍👍
:)
You should make a stormhammer next
Horus Rising, just started the Heresy novels, pushed me to do Sons of Horus HH army
Oh totally get that!
my first thought was it would be the metal version, like the first baneblade i saw. but ok it was published by games workshop and not forge world ^^
What kind of airbrush are you using? I'm looking at getting a repulsor for my space marines and the thought of painting by hand is not ideal haha.
On to the third one.
My parents recently moved and I rescued an entire ork army!
Oh awesome! Hope you get them back to battle soon!
Personally I like the weathering as my partner keeps saying there not on parade it's a battle field.
Yes exactly that!
I got 5 on day one. Only made one. Seemed like yesterday.
I do have a qestion I’m toying with starting a krege army of my own where should I start
I don't think you used enough powder. One coating of red? What's it, only on Mars?
All my Krieg have matching powder as if they're on the same campaign!
