Part 1, 3, 7, and VS are my favorite look. Fun fact! The reason why the sleeves are plain red was because Freddy's sweater was originally sleeveless. Wes wanted to show off Freddy's burned arms. David Miller said no because it would take up to 7 hours to apply the arms and they only had 30 days to film. In that test picture of Freddy wearing the newsboy hat he's wearing the original sweater without the sleeves. Wes said fine we'll put red sleeves on because there was no time to knit the stripes.
That's cool. I never knew that.. I know Wes said on a documentary that the reason he chose the red and green pairing was because it's more difficult for humans to perceive properly.
I feel like New Nightmare's costume and makeup design nailed the point down that this isn't the same Freddy. The fresh clothes, the sharp makeup and claw, the contacts, it all screams that Freddy is more powerful and dangerous than he's ever been.
NOBODY would've ever known who Freddy Krueger is if it wasn't for Robert England. He took the character he was given and turned it into an absolute ICON of Horror that will last for as long as people tell scary stories. Robert England was destined to portray Freddy, it was something that was always meant to be. I sure am glad it happened.
I also noticed Freddy looks more and more "human" as the series progresses. By part 6 at times he just looks like Robert Englund with some scares on his face
Agreed… I first saw part 2 and was terrified as a kid… we can all remember that kitchen window overlooking the back yard… and how terrifying it would be to see Pt 2 Freddy looking at you … I loved part two and the look… then part 7 … then part 5 … scariest Freddy for sure
I think he was tied for his darkest in 1 and 2. It’s a different kind of dark but still dark, the first one he is stealthy and finds it hilarious to kill and scare people and in prt 2 he is just dark with barely any laughing
According to Kevin Yagher, it was actually Chuck Russell (the director) that wanted the makeup change for the third film. He says this in a TH-cam video, in which he gives a tour of his studio/warehouse. Edit: Also, just so you know, Buechler is pronounced Beekler.
The part 4 makeup has always been my absolute favorite. That’s my favorite movie in the series as well. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Dave McRae as Freddy, he looks awesome!!!
This is an amazing video Chris! I hung out with Robert Englund and Lance Henrickson for over 4 hours at a hotel bar. Robert gave me so much life advice. I've always been a huge Fred Head.
Word. I'm 43 and Freddy's Dead came out when I was like 12 and that was just when I was getting into horror stuff and I always loved it, thought it fits in great with the rest of the series and doesn't disappoint on creative kills.
All the sweaters from the second film to the remake were made by the same company/person, which is Judy Graham of Topaz Knitwear. The sweater from the first film was acrylic, with wool being used for the subsequent films. For the remake, a darker shade of red and brown rather than green was used. The company also made other knits, including the Bernadette sweaters from Big Bang Theory.
Thoughts: The original: One of the best and most gruesome looking. I love the deep red scars, the blacken marks, the hole through his ear, and the dingy outfit. He just looks so raw and fresh like he's become the dream demon for the first time. I love that we don't see much of his face since it draws more mystery to his makeup and perhaps hides the rubbery look it had in the behind the scenes. I also have to agree that I prefer the all red sleeves for the sweater, and it's a design I would love to see in a new sequel or reboot, which was apparently utilized in a recent Walking Dead episode as a nod. Part 2: Probably the best looking overall. The scariest one of them all. If the first one looked like a raw burnt victim, then this one looks like a demonic corpse brought to life. The chipped pointy ears, rotten teeth, red eyes and deep voice makes him so demonic and evil as hell. My favorite shot is when he's smiling when Lisa's stabbing him with the kitchen knife and the way he's shot, it looks like his eyes are black and soulless while giggling in the shadows. F*cking terrifying. Part 3: A good basic Freddy design. I feel if you want a Freddy everyone would recognize, this is the one for ya. It's like a hybrid of the first two where he looks very human yet there's so much details in his scars with the Part 2 sweater. There are some shots where I could've added some more paint job on the open scores but I absolutely love the glove. I actually had a NECA replica back in 2014. I also think the fedora is the best shape overall besides part 7. Part 4: Apparently Kevin Yagher disliked Part 3's makeup a bit and wanted to add the bony cheekbones and sunken eyes with the scars of Part 3 and he did it okay. I felt he looked too washed out, color wise. I also didn't like the shape of the head of the eyes. Something feels off. Hated the fedora, it's too small and not that wide, and it looks off with the makeup. However I love the glove. It's definitely the most gnarly looking one. But the blades are a bit too small I feel. And the sweater was starting to look too bright and clean. Part 5: I don't hate this one, honestly. I really like the dark shadows around the eyes, it definitely gives him that Nosferatu look for the gothic visual of the movie, but at times he looks too fake. Nothing about it feels like a real burnt victim. It's clearly designed to make it simpler and rushed for the production, but if they wanted him "aged" and "weathered" why have LESS makeup? It should've have ripped off skin, tattered and blacked clothes and rusted and broken glove. Not something straight from Party City! The glove looks okay, but I really love the blades. They definitely look more threatening than Part 4's. Freddy's Dead: Probably the worst looking. At the very least with the remake, it still looks impressive but this one sucks, even as practical makeup job. I will disagree that this one looked less rubbery than Part 5 because I think this one looks the most rubbery and fake looking. The Indiana Jones fedora was a bit odd on him. If Part 4 was too short, then Part 6 is too wide. The sweater is way too clean and vibrant and the glove's blades look like butter knives. It's so bad. New Nightmare: If Part 2's the best, then New Nightmare is my favorite. By this point, he became a joke, so this new revamp was very necessary. I will argue that it's the same Freddy from the other movies because Wes mentions the demon was Freddy in the movies, so it's not like they were two Freddys during the 10 year run. It's just a new backstory for Freddy or the evil behind him. I love the lower brows and the icy contacts, and the coloring of the skin and uniform. The trench coat made him more intimidating that I wished he should've had from the beginning. I will agree that it looks a bit clean at times like the clothes but again if they wanted a new "sleeker" and "Keaton's Batman" inspired look, it makes sense. The biomechanical hand is nice but I prefer the robot one. I will also agree that he should've had burnt skin instead of the split look, it makes him more Hellraiser inspired. And even though Craven regretted making this design, it's actually Robert Englund's favorite look and movie of the series. FvJ: I honestly don't understand the love of this one. While I do respect it for capturing the traditional makeup of Part 3 and 4, it just looks like a lazy and cheap recreation. It's too smoth, too orange and not gruesome looking. Hardly any lines or wrinkles. The scars are too red, too prominent and more like polkadots. His rotten teeth makes him more like Austin Powers and his brows are too high, making more of a friendler look. Why not keep the lower, meaning brows from New Nightmare? The glove looked good, even if it's too dark at points to where it looks like a black sweater. The glove was badass through. It's just a beast of a design. But it all makes up for it with the Demon Freddy. To me, it's like the true face of Freddy like in New Nightmare and I like how we see glimpse of it whenever he's angry like the prologue with the veiny eyes and teeth, then again when Jason killed a victim of his and then the full reveal. It's a shame it wasn't the main look because it looks frightening and evil. Which the original script had him keep the look after he's pulled to reality, so... why didn't they change it. Remake: I get what they wanted to do, and I respect them from going with a more realistic look but like you said, it limits the performance. Also a hot take, but the reason why it sucked was not because of the makeup itself, but because it's too accurate to the original design. Much like the movie itself, it copies everything we already seen, and makeup sticks out because it's so different from Robert's, yet his outfit is literally the same. You could've taken the description of Freddy's face, hat, sweater and glove and do your own design. Come on, Wes Craven even did with Freddy in New Nightmare. Love that design or not, you have to admit it was trying to be different from what this one was. Here's your chance to make a new 100% redesign for Freddy, and you blew it.
Just wanted to say mate, and I don’t rarely comment on TH-cam vids, this like my third ever, but can’t explain how much I love this video and the details you explain make up/ SF wise, I thought I knew it all about the Freddy franchise but you sir set the mark silly high!!
Robert Englund is being silly and funny at the same time as he playing as freddy krueger we all really like that character because he is our favorite freddy
Finally! Someone who discusses things I never knew about Freddy! And also I found part 6 more hilarious. It's bad it you want scares, but it's great if you want laughs
Got myself a Darkride mask, because of your channel. I'm also slowly writing through my own film concept. I'd love to play Freddy in a film. Been studying Robert Englund extensively in these films, so I can portray him to a tee
I've been a life-long Freddy fan and I don't know how I've never noticed he didn't have the stripes on the sleeves of the original sweater. I actually find it more creepy with this design. It's like the dream sequences wasn't completely fleshed out and only shows bits and pieces of information filled in. It also would've been cool if on every dream sequence in the first one, the sweater would change slightly.
freddy is one of those characters that are so iconic from the very first time seeing him that the actor holds all the cards wen makeing a deal..the nightmare reboot is proof noone else can play freddy like englund
I don’t count 2009, but for me the “scariest” Freddy make up is part II…first use of yellow/red contacts and the make up was just vicious, it fit his persona in II. New Nightmare Freddy is pretty good too.
I've seen Elm St 2 when I was 8yo. Made me sleep between my parents for weeks. Still think that Jesse transformation scene is one of the scariest if not nr1 in horror history.
Great video, subscribed. I guess I am in a small minority that loved the remake Freddy look. It is my favorite after part 1 and the brief appearance of demon Freddy. I know the comical aspect is part of these movies but the creepy look really was cool. Even that screenshot you kept showing reinforces my opinion. And I was born in 79 so I grew up watching the movies, huge fan, loyal to Robert Englund. The movie wasn't so bad, I enjoyed it more after my initial theatre viewing, which was very disappointing. I just wish they would have done one more with Jackie, I think they could have really made something better with him if they gave it one more try. That being said, I'm not offended for most people hating this, but it is my genuine opinion. I loved the new Freddy look from the start even though it took me a bit to (sorta) appreciate the movie.
I frickin LIVE for videos like this. Man, you always make the best videos and I am always inspired by your work. Watching you and a few other horror youtubers led my partner and I to start our own show on TH-cam - ‘Haddonfield Radio’ and we both love your work! Keep up the great work, Chris!
Great review Chris, very interesting facts, and this post has come at a time where I'm hyped about the new fan made film and falling back in love with the franchise, 10 years since freddy vs jason, and especially finally getting to meet Robert at the London Film con last summer 21, made my dreamz come true!...ha haaaa haa!! He got into character too, it was so cool watching him at the photo shoots. Yeah and its as come at a time also of almost the 40th anniversary too so been reading up mire on the films at, I've only just found out the alternative ending to Freddy vs jason was a bed scene lol. Yeah the first Freddy gave me nightmares renting out the bus at a early teen and the 2nd felt dark and creepy. Greeting from UK, great insight your posts and thoughts taking your time out on your passions, thanks man
I also viewed the movies in reverse.... Well, I watched part 5, 4, 3 ,2 and 1 then New Nightmare then Freddy's Dead. Our video store didnt have Freddy's Dead nor did they know it existed, they were telling me New Nightmare was the only one beyond part 5.... So I had to wait a while before I found FD
In the original films, it seemed like the make-up just got lazy toward the end. The RM design just really didn't work with the dim lighting. It was an effective version of real life burn victims, but it didn't really read in the shadows the way it did in the first films.
Great video, Freddy in the 1st was definitely my favourite too. I'm very jealous that you have a glove, and the jumper - why on earth did you sell that?! I've had the pleasure of meeting Robert a few times now, even got a pic with him in the full make up which I love - after starting to watch the films when I was 10 this was something I always wanted to do!!! He's such a lovely guy and a wealth of knowledge as well as a great story teller. Have you ever got the chance to meet him?
The Goldbergs bit was so disappointing...It's the closest to a fat ass Freddy we've gotten. IDK if it was just Robert's weight at the time of the shoot, or a combo of that & overly thick makeup application.
How To Defeat Freddy Krueger 1. Don't be afraid of him 2. Power of love 3. Bury his remains and throw Holy Water on it 4. Make him see his own reflection 5. Get his mama 6. Bring him into the real world 7. Burn him to death 8. Bring him into the real world 9. Bring him into the real world
My favorite Freddy look remains Wes Craven's New Nightmare. The green fedora and long black cat add so much as does the thumb knife. The makeup itself looks as if he's bursting out of his skin. It looks painful and terrifying.
I found Freddy got less scary as the movies progressed, he just gets more comedic creepy as they progress.... and no one could pull it off but Robert Englund... it just worked.
You COMPLETELY skipped over the "syringe glove" from part 3, ("What a rush!"). This was in the scene where Jennifer Rubins' character dies. Not only was it an interesting variation of the glove, it squirted a green substance before injecting into Jennifer's track-marks turned gaping mouths. Also, you make no mention of the gelating Freddy head used in the climax of part 2. The head was fully articulated, and melted all the way to the bone, on camera, surrounded in flames.
I can't even talk about the things I've sold to collectors without immediately needing Ativan and sedation, I cry endlessly and will til I die, so it's helpful to know that you regret selling the screen used sweater
You’re info about the Robert being not hired for 2 is wrong. In his autobiography he said he was always on board. The double in the shower was bad, but that never was a guy that was going to play Freddy for the whole movie
And Jackie was a good, sinister Freddy, but I agree that the makeup hindered his performance, rather than helped it. And that movie was just so B O R I N G.
I read this 3x as "The Evolution of Freddie Mercury" before I finally got it right. All while knowing, full well, exactly what it said. I hate my brain sometimes.
i loved freddy vs jason..it showed how dangerous freddy can be ..he can hang with a huge strong monster ..and as much as everyone i talk to says jason won or it was a tie, it was obviously both alive at the end so you have to go to the score cards and freddy controled most of that fight and for sure got more hits. judges have to go with freddy
@@bezoticallyyours83 who would you say won the fight in your opinion..there was no clear winner since both were alive but Jason had Freddy's head but on the other hand Freddy did more damage, at least got way more hits off..if it had judges for the fight like boxing or MMA, Freddy won on points ..but they did it open ended so people could debate the winner
PARTE 1, 3, 7 Y VS SON MI LOOK FAVORITO. ¡HECHO DE LA DIVERSIÓN! LA RAZÓN POR LA QUE LAS MANGAS SON ROJAS SENCILLAS FUE PORQUE EL SUÉTER DE FREDDY ORIGINALMENTE NO TENÍA MANGAS. QUERÍAMOS MOSTRAR LOS BRAZOS QUEMADOS DE FREDDY. DAVID MILLER DIJO QUE NO PORQUE TARDARÍA HASTA 7 HORAS EN APLICAR LOS BRAZOS Y SÓLO TENÍAN 30 DÍAS PARA GRABAR. EN ESA FOTO DE FREDDY CON EL GORRO DE REPARTIDOR DE PERIÓDICOS, ESTÁ CON EL SUETER ORIGINAL SIN MANGAS. WES DIJO BIEN NOS PONGAMOS LAS MANGAS PORQUE NO HABIA TIEMPO PARA TEJER LAS RAYAS.
@12:25 this is the first image I had ever seen of Freddy back in the day. It was on a dvd box set and always wondered where it was from because he appears to be wearing a brown trenchcoat? I feel like they flirted with look but couldn't commit because his look was already established. The same with part 3, the VHS copy had Freddy's wearing a trenchcoat that never appears in any of the films new nightmare is the only film Freddy appears to wear a trenchcoat any more info on this is why? or was the coat just for promo stills?
So, do you have a 'definitive' favorite glove? As in, if you could only own *one* replica - what would it be? 🤔 (Thanks again for the fantastic content, man!)
My Scariest to Lamest Freddy Krueger 1. Original Freddy 2. Freddy's Revenge 3. Dream Warriors 4. New Nightmare 5. Dream Master 6. Freddy vs Jason 7. Freddy's Nightmares Season 1 8. Freddy's Dead 9. Reboot Freddy 10. Freddy's Nightmares Season 2 11. Dream Child 12. The Goldbergs
In my opinion, his look from pt.2 is peak Freddy. The cheekbones, the eyes, the whole look to me made for the scariest looking Freddy.
@@copekillzz That fact about the stripes is well known but the red sleeves were discussed in a deleted scene from Never Sleep Again.
Now I'm imagining Freddy wearing a red and green tank top with pruned-looking arms 🤣
I also noticed Freddy looks more and more "human" as the series progresses. By part 6 at times he just looks like Robert Englund with some scares on his face
That would honestly be pretty cool to see in the films. Or the other way around where he gets more grotesque as the film progresses
Guessing the more souls of children he
Keeps taking.
Freddy’s best appearance was in Part 2 IMO.
I love the “witch” type of look. He was his darkest in this entry.
He was definitely the most dark in the 2nd and the makeup is amazing
Agreed… I first saw part 2 and was terrified as a kid… we can all remember that kitchen window overlooking the back yard… and how terrifying it would be to see Pt 2 Freddy looking at you … I loved part two and the look… then part 7 … then part 5 … scariest Freddy for sure

Yes I agree the make up in A NUGHTMARE ON ELM STREET was great. And he was very dark and ruthless
Part 2 has to be my favorite. Love that witchy look, it's a great design.
Love this! This is the most comprehensive costume breakdown for Freddy I’ve seen. Great work!
I really like that he went from a serial killer to an evil spirit to a full-fledged demon.
Now that is fear.
Lance Henrickson is a badass, that's really cool man, damn.
Word. I'm 43 and Freddy's Dead came out when I was like 12 and that was just when I was getting into horror stuff and I always loved it, thought it fits in great with the rest of the series and doesn't disappoint on creative kills.
Fantastic work! Loving the new director with the channel. Can't wait to see what in store.
Not many people catch that... along with the makeup in ANOES 5, this film also was the first to have no rotten teeth/gum makeup for Freddy.
Thoughts:
The original: One of the best and most gruesome looking.

You sound Extremely picky😮😮 And you call yourself a Nightmare fan???................
I'm ready for the evolution of Cosplay Chris! Would love to see the beginning of your cosplay and custom collectables!! Love your work!
Nightmare on Elm St. Parts 1, 3 & 4 are my Favs!! Dream Warriors is my all time Fav Horror Film. Its Pure Perfection 💘
Just wanted to say mate, and I don’t rarely comment on TH-cam vids, this like my third ever, but can’t explain how much I love this video and the details you explain make up/ SF wise, I thought I knew it all about the Freddy franchise but you sir set the mark silly high!!
Really enjoyed the detail and history you shared with this one! I hope to see more like this one in the future for other characters as well.
For me, the best look was in a New Nightmare. Freddy looked great in his Trench Coat.
It was also Robert Englund's favorite design out of all of them.
Obviously, his sweater healed as the movies went on.
Thanks for including DNN, Chris! You rock!!!
Love the Freddy content on the channel! Always enjoy these types of videos!
Got myself a Darkride mask, because of your channel. I'm also slowly writing through my own film concept. I'd love to play Freddy in a film. Been studying Robert Englund extensively in these films, so I can portray him to a tee
Well, quite simple. There's Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - which is the work of a genius - and then there's everything else.
I've been a life-long Freddy fan and I don't know how I've never noticed he didn't have the stripes on the sleeves of the original sweater. I actually find it more creepy with this design. It's like the dream sequences wasn't completely fleshed out and only shows bits and pieces of information filled in. freddy is one of those characters that are so iconic from the very first time seeing him that the actor holds all the cards wen makeing a deal..the nightmare reboot is proof noone else can play freddy like englund
Loved the vid! The amount of work and research into it is apparent. Thanks Chris!
Part 2 makeup and fedora, part 1 sweater/outfit, FvJ glove, and new nightmare trenchcoat dirtied up would be the perfect Freddy look
New nightmare is not only my favorite look but my favorite movie in the franchise
Freddy 2 makeup makes him look the evilest and demonic. It's my personal favorite looks of his and I wish they kept it.
Awesome video Chris
Earned my sub. It’s rare i learn anything new about these movies. And I’m a prop nerd so… great work. I look forward to more
I frickin LIVE for videos like this.
Greeting from UK, great insight your posts and thoughts taking your time out on your passions, thanks man
Super Freddy from Nightmare 5 wasn't Robert Englund
This was SUCH a great video!
Thank you very much for sharing.
This is a fun watch. :^)
Honestly the only designs I had a problem with were part 5 and 6
Everything else I like a decent amount
I also viewed the movies in reverse.... Well, I watched part 5, 4, 3 ,2 and 1 then New Nightmare then Freddy's Dead. Our video store didnt have Freddy's Dead nor did they know it existed, they were telling me New Nightmare was the only one beyond part 5.... So I had to wait a while before I found FD
Amazing video, Chris. Where do you get all this info from? I'd love to see you do something similar with Jason's various looks.
Awesome video Chris! My favorite look of Freddy is part 2 and part 1. Part 2 was the first Nightmare movie I seen.
Everytime i see the Paper Boy hat pics, Robert looks so sad to me.
What a great video 👍
How To Defeat Freddy Krueger
1. Don't be afraid of him
2. Power of love
3. Bury his remains and throw Holy Water on it
4. Make him see his own reflection
5. Get his mama
6. Bring him into the real world
7. Burn him to death
8. Bring him into the real world
9. Bring him into the real world
bro youre so underrated. why dont you get more attention
The bit that wasn’t mentioned was that in Wes cravens new nightmare in the credits, Freddy Krueger is played by Freddy Krueger
Part 4. Dream master was my favorite ✌
FREDDY wore REDWINGS!!! Mind blown. Freddys dead is the first one i watched too and i hold it closer to the heart than any of them lol
I'm always back and forth on whether my favorite Freddy look is Freddy's Revenge or Dream Warriors. DW is definitely my favorite glove, hands down.
"You forgot the Power Glove"!
I want to give a quick shout-out to Freddy's guest appearance on DC Follies.
And, you made no mention of the Freddy-nurse, from part 3. Or, even "Super-Freddy", which was black & white.
Top Notch evolution vid Chris 👍
The screen used sweater that you sold had me shaking my head NEVER SELL. I only regret me selling never buying
I can't even talk about the things I've sold to collectors without immediately needing Ativan and sedation, I cry endlessly and will til I die, so it's helpful to know that you regret selling the screen used sweater
I always looked at it like Freddy was kind of a shapeshifter in dreams the way his fave changed a little bit here and there
Do Jason voorhees next and third

Jason was boring
@@sliat1981 Jason is strong than Freddy is weak
@@pjthedjbrother7326 If Jason is Dead and Death is Eternal Sleep, the Freddy is Stronger…
@@jayday1503 he is weak in real world
You’re info about the Robert being not hired for 2 is wrong. In his autobiography he said he was always on board. The double in the shower was bad, but that never was a guy that was going to play Freddy for the whole movie
He looked the most scary in part 2 imo
I like F vs J too
@@bezoticallyyours83 who would you say won the fight in your opinion..there was no clear winner since both were alive but Jason had Freddy's head but on the other hand Freddy did more damage, at least got way more hits off..if it had judges for the fight like boxing or MMA, Freddy won on points ..but they did it open ended so people could debate the winner
will never forgive them for making him a cartoon character during the later movies
IMO, part 1 and 2 are the scariest and coolest looking depictions of Freddy.
For some reason, Freddy from Freddy VS Jason will always be the “Canon” freddy.
I'd actually cry if they re-casted Johnny Depp. Istg it'd be so funny to see him play him again
Love all your Freddy videos Chris… keep them coming!
What can you tell us about the doco NIGHTMARES IN THE MAKEUP CHAIR? How can we see it?
Excellent video!
There is actually a lot of great cinematography in part 5 and Freddy's makeup has a great look, just lacks detail in paint app.
Parts 1 and 2 are by far my favorite looks of Freddy.
So, do you have a 'definitive' favorite glove? As in, if you could only own *one* replica - what would it be? 🤔 (Thanks again for the fantastic content, man!)
I never would have noticed the sweater differences
Very cool video..Part 2 my favorite Freddy. You have done the looks of Michael and Freddy now, how about Jason?
Love the Freddy content!!!

Do you possess the power glove replica?
The only freddy makeup that looks good is nightmare 2-4, I really feel like freddy was healing and becoming cleaner as time went on.
Fantastic vid! I agree too by the way!
I believe the indiana jones hat was from a UK supplier called herbert johnson. I think they still make them.
Awesome work.
The "bone glove" in New Nightmare is taken from the original ANOES poster
Freddy vs Jason is my favorite. Question what version is the immortal mask Freddy
The commercial is for Freddy's diner chocolate milkshake. Perfect
Great video
I just watched a video where you said the second look was your favorite. Bro just be talkin
I really wish we could have seen Jackie as freddy in an original nightmare movie.
