The RTD: Detour and Special Trains

    Denver RTD Special Service (C-Line) and J-Line trains
    In September and October 2023, loop stations were closed due to construction, and all trains were detoured to Union Station for a short period of time. This provided a unique opportunity to see destination sign announcements and programs that are not normally available.
    Unfortunately, as part of the discontinuation of these two lines, C-Line announcements were not available, and instead, replaced by "Special Service" announcements.
    However, J-Line announcements were still available as usual.

    It's been used before. However, the idea of having a regular service between Nine Mile and Union Station was dismissed internally pretty early, in favor of having better headways. I wrote the timetables for the opening of the SE lines and it was tricky enough to get everything through I-25 & Broadway without leading to a Portland Steel Bridge scheduling problem. Keep in mind that the W-Line was going to be in the picture, too.
    Our experience with the travel market also suggested that the Aurora SE area had an affinity for jobs in the center and south end of Downtown Denver (especially state and federal jobs). And, for access to the airport and its massive employment, the R-Line would overlap the outer end of a J-Line. The finishing touch was when the mayors of Denver and Aurora agreed that the SE branch to Aurora should go to the central loop rather than the Union Station. They actually had nothing to do with it, but instead of an argument they got cheerful agreement. In regard to the travel market, we also knew that the high-income suburbs along I-25 that almost reach Colorado Springs suburbs had an interest in riding transit to the major league sports facilities in the Central Platte Valley. Thus, the core of the timetable became the D, E, and H-Lines.

    Nevertheless, there were some potential needs for a J-Line. Because so many new travel combinations were being created in a relatively short number of years, what if we had overlooked something, especially before the R-Line was completed? There was a time lag in preparing digital signs and voice messages, And, in an emergency or for a special event, all the electronic announcements and signage would have been misleading at the least. We have drivers on buses who could announce a detour. On rail transit in detours, operators sometimes miss making one of the many announcements. And lastly, we had experience with two huge special events in 1993 and sports event sell-out crowds for which Operations might need to run a train on the crowd break. For example, there is a yard at Peoria Station. If an extra train on a crowd takeaway needs to end up there, it would make more sense to run it as a J-Line to Florida than as an E-Line to Southmoor Station.
    Of course, we knew that there would be some curiosity about it, just like the SF Muni's Rte 4 trolley coach rollsigns when I lived there, or Portland Traction Company 82nd Avenue Line transfers issued years after that company was no more. I'll meet you at Track 9 or 10 at DUS to talk about it!

      @@evergreenbear Note, it'll only come out for detours that last longer than a whole service day. So no Colfax marathon (usually)

    Is this the first time they used the J Line and announcements, or were they used before? Also, what color is the J Line?

      From what I can tell, this is the first time that J-Line announcements have been used, although they've existed since day 1. Originally, the J-Line was part of the 2002 (reworked into the 2004) FasTrack plan and worked with the H-Line for the Third Access project, which would send rail to Downtown via Broadway where one line (either H or J) would head into downtown via First or Second access (the Loop or DUS respectively) and the other would use Third Access.
      In the proposed maps for the J-Line, its original color was White, however, it may have differed if the line entered revenue operation.
