Celine's performance is not meant to be operatic. she knows she's a pop singer and isn't using an opera voice to sing this Carmen bit. she did a good job. there's no point of comparing with how a real opera Mezzo would deliver this aria
I am excluding ALL opera singers, I mean POP singers, so Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande etc. the only one I can think of who could even get close is Jennifer Hudson.
Excellent observation on your part about the true genesis of this "opera" where Bizet truly intended to have it for the general masses rather than the soffisticated "bel canto" fans. It failed misserably causing Bizet's death and so Guiraud transformed it into a "true" opera by setting the spoken dialogues to music aka recitatives and required highly trained operatic voices to make it more palatable to "classical"music fans. I am sure that Bizet would have fallen in love with Dion's rendition
People are so narrow minded, she said herself she wasn't an opera singer, but liked the song! And by the way by pop standards, Celine has an awesome! I'm bored when i listen to operatic voices
It's funny to read all the comments 😅 It is a nice Pop version of Habanera. It fits her. But the people forget that opera singing and pop singing are different jobs. The biggest difference is that an opera singer is singing WITHOUT Microphone. So of course they have to sing in another way/different technique to come above the orchestra. Let's enjoy that we have so many different styles and don't compare. Otherwise would be boring 🙃😊
I love celine and i know this is her style , looooool it fun but still good ..i love Maria Callas more :p ..anyway i can feel power in the end of this ...good job Celine
i love it, it's amazing. if bizet was composing in late XX century, i'm sure he'd want carmen to sing this way. there was no pop music or musicals back then. people from his time were bashing him for creating Carmen, it was cosidered shit at first. they were blinded, just like u are now with hating her version people. you're really close minded.
@chasartsmith French is her native language. I don't think she was trying to sound operatic she was most likely performing a fave. song of hers from the show.
i like celine, but her voice doesn't suit to conventional classical music. but her interpretation and "artistic realization" of that peace is inspirational - and for a classical singer who wants to keep up with modern music, its a good unconventional source of inspiration!!! so thank you!!
This is fabulous, but not as great as the version she use to do live when she was ~16. And to all those saying "how dare she" and "stick to pop" - this IS pop. Clearly she's not pretending to be classically trained singer, nor should she, and is merely doing a pop interpretation of a French classic. Nothing more, nothing less. So stop treating this as some attempt at self-aggrandizement. Girl likes to sing and is darn good at it; let her.
I am aware that she speaks a more laid back and slang version of french but that doesn't change the fact that when she speaks to someone that speaks 'legit' french they still understand her...just because someone speaks the "slang" version of a language doesn't make it any 'less' of it...just like the people in the south in America, ALL they speak is slang, but its still a VERSION of english... Or how American English is different from Kings English its all about dialects.
I just about lost my spaghetti at TreasureOnes comment hilarious but like it or not this lady can sing!! and it helps the 'opera movement" I watched on 60 minutes how the new York metropolitan opera is actively trying to get a whole new crowd to expierence and enjoy opera so that's its NOT seen as a class thing
Spearmint green is not a color I would picture Carmen wearing. Perhaps something a bit more saucy? I do enjoy her interpretation of this song though. Of course it is not traditional operatic like we are used to hearing with Bizet or any opera, but it still nice to see people put their own flavor in it and make their own.
@wiccanwanderer Me too! And vise-versa… Imagine a perfectly competent singer of Classical music, I'm not mentioning names (Renee Fleming!) doing pop music- something is just off… But yes, this performance of Celine's is simply horrid, horrendous. A complete travesty. It's embarrassing to watch.
French is NOT her native language. Her native language is a bastardization of French found among lower class Canadians. It's called "joual." It's French like Cockney rhyming slang is English.
This shows the limitations of even a very good pop singer's voice. I am disappointed that Celine Dion would even dare this. It is in bad taste and painful to hear...
But Opera singer doing popsongs is ok? This is double standard, isn't it? She has a trained voice, can cary every tone, some even harder to sing for an Opera singer.
cher Pierre stop being a snob... LoL I have heard classically trained singers do a far worse job with an operatic aria... Céline liked the song and sang it with a "pop" approach. Anna Natrebko is very popular with many and sings in all the big opera houses of the world... I personally do not enjoy her singing... when I want to listen "fresh" to see if I am swayed, I will watch a new clip and turn it off without pooh poohing if I do not like. Good and Bad taste is subjective :-)

I am a huge opera fan and, this is not opera. But guess what, I like this. I love Celine Dion and I enjoyed her interpretation in a pop vocal style.
And i think she could sing it in an opera style and opera rsnge given her vocal range...she can go into the 6th octave..maybe 7th if she trains
It wasn't POP style it was classic style, just not opera
It's like Josh Groban: Popera.
I can’t think of a single current singer that can sing like this. She’s utterly unique.
I am excluding ALL opera singers, I mean POP singers, so Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande etc. the only one I can think of who could even get close is Jennifer Hudson.
She did great job. She made the song her version. And she won the crowds’ hearts here.
This lady is an absolute perfection!

the most idiotic thing I've ever read, holy Christ!
This makes no sense. Opera fans back then were the general masses.
@@Ignasimp yep. celine's version is great but i have no idea why everyone is intent on revisionism when they can just say that.
She's native French speaker, of course it sounds amazing!
People are so narrow minded, she said herself she wasn't an opera singer, but liked the song! And by the way by pop standards, Celine has an awesome! I'm bored when i listen to operatic voices

best ever. Performance, and everything
Attachante !!! Merci depuis Paris!
It is superb.
Great! So dramatic perfomance.
RRRRRARRRRR!!! Love your Celine!
I actually enjoyed hearing this aria in a thicker texture I can tell she had to rework the song to suit the voice of a pop singer

God i just love to see things like that....XDXD I can already recognize her style...good as always
This was originally an habanera. You don't have to be an opera singer to sing it and do a good job.
you can defend her version without idiotic excuses. it's an operatic aria. that's the way it's to be sung "originally."

THANK YOU...this is the first time I SAW THIS VIDEO....THANK YOU FOR SHARING
me encantó - que linda Celine y que bien canta opera
amazing!!!!
Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how to do that 'rrrr..rrr' ? it's an amazing pronunciation skill
Vũ Hoàng Nhật Tân whichever french speaker can make that sound. It was often used in old songs, by Edith Piaf, and some others
Practice practice practice! It’s also used as a singing warm up exercise a bit like lip trills
I love this song it always sounds so sexy whenever she sing it!
The French mad af in these comments

Did she just sing a Full-Lyric Soprano role? Oh wow
@Rhopoe Renee Fleming released a pop album 3 years ago and it was awesome!

@lycoin -lmao, thats the funniest conductor ever! :-)

She was going more for the Piaf sound but I bet she could do a decent job even if she did it operatically
@fradaja Now that would be something to see. I like your idea
I think it's supposed to be more Celine style, and not how Carmen was intended to be sung
Its different, it's fun
@annastinsonsoprano
Her dress is bright yellow. Rather saucy if you ask me.
come on guys, she was 18 y-o... and besides, Céline isn't the one that would make one vomits the more...
Who makes one vomit more then?
What took you so long?
what the **** is the conductor doing there???
HAHAHAHAHA..........hope she sang it in Vegas and it stays there !
sigue cantando POP..... better
I kinda like Celine, but this is murder by all means
I will agree to that, no classical singins svp xD
nice try but it didnt work for me. it sounds awkward.
omgg Céline had bad clothing taste in her incognito year xD !!
Esto NO es opera.
Exactamente!
And who said it IS?😂
Saludos.
Very cute. Too bad she is so nasal.
Bien cantada pero ella no es soprano. Buen intento Celine
Stefanía Para empezar Celine es soprano. Pero esque esta aria es para mezzosoprano.

is this a joke ???? HOW DARE SHE ???? She should stick to her ridiculous songs and leave opera to real singers !
Please, Celine, never do this again!Stick to your pop boring music!
