Monet was deff rich because the .75 cent lime green metro card was a step above the .50 cent neon orange metro card given to the poorer children as it was based off of parents income😂
This reminds me of the free vs reduced vs full pay/byo lunch to school. I had this friend who's mom would make him a lunch everyday, and we all thought he was rich. Lol
Really? I think they changed it based on distance away from school by the time I was in highschool. People who lived close by had orange and everyone else (regardless of income) had the green. I had a friend who lived off food stamps and in government housing and she had a green metro.

I had to give money to MY parents during college, not the other way around - thats how bad it was for me. Like, they legit had no food a week before the month ended, after helping out I had not much left for myself and me working during college did not financial benefit me at all lol.

This is one of my favorite btdq videos. I've watched this so many times, like at least 20 times. It cracks me up every time. Julietta holding the camera
It’s crazy hearing this cuz my dad grew up the exact same way in Trinidad and he claims they were middle class, but whenever he tells people about his upbringing they call him rich which he doesn’t understand
My mom grew up in Venezuela and had a maid/nanny, but judging by the pictures, they looked middle class - I think we forget how much easier it was back then to afford a housekeeper and large house, especially in a foreign country where maid service is very competitive and the housing market wasn't as commodity-driven. Our perception is warped bc we're projecting the economic framework of the past 30 years unto those who lived comfortably in the 60s to the 80s. Even in the 90s, you could own a home in NY on a single income if you owned a business. All my great-uncles, that owned grocery stores, had big houses. But if your dad worked as a meat-packer while mom raised the kids, or you lived on welfare (after my dad died), then everybody else seems "rich" to you. I don't think it's surprising that Monet's family could afford as much as they had considering both parents had jobs in high-positions within their respective industries. They were upper-middle class for the 80s and 90s, but would now be considered only middle-class bc both their incomes don't have the same buying power in our current economy - unless both parents invested well before their retirement.
My old therapist was Cuban and fully admitted his family was rich before they left. I forget what his parents did. The church loved them because they gave so much money.

Basic cable is still pretty privileged. We grew up on local TV, which back then was pretty decent. We had PBS, plus Saturday cartoons and after-school cartoons on Fox, ABC, and NBC. Oh and TGIF with all the teen shows. Not to mention, all the black family sitcoms on Warner and UPN. And no paid music streaming bc Napster and radio music was free, recording tapes & burning CDs was normal. The 80s and 90s were mad chill, never felt culturally-deprived tbh. But when it came to clothing trends, taking the bus, free school lunch program (aka hot lunch) vs paid lunches (aka cold lunch), signing up for sports programs/extracurricular activities/summer camp, and paying for field trips, that's when we really felt it.
