The hip check happened because the refs let the Spurs get away with murder all game. If the refs had reined the overly physical stuff in earlier, then Horry wouldn’t have felt free to do the hip check. Basically the league’s power structure wanted to punish the Suns for playing the game differently than everyone else, so the refs had David Stern and Stu Jackson’s implicit approval to allow the Spurs to beat the crap out of them, then slap overly-harsh punishments on any Sun who reacted.

For people who don't think Nash could've been an elite scorer, in the 2005 playoffs against Dallas it was the Mavs game plan to make Nash a scorer and not a playmaker, and he averaged 30ppg and 12apg on 55%fg, 42% 3pfg. The last 4 games of that series he averaged 37 and 12 on 60% fg and 50% from 3. In today's NBA he would've been told to take 8-10 threes a game and score much more. Would've been interesting to see
What’s insane is that they basically were saying let him get his and not beat us with his passing, yet he was still able to get 12 assists a game in that series in addition to scoring 30.
Nash's highest scoring season was under 19 ppg he wasn't a scorer.. Trae Young is gonna be what Nash could've been if he didn't play so passive all the time

Despite his 2 MVPs, Nash is still under appreciated.
thats because the 2005 mvp was shaq and the 2006 mvp was kobe. those guys were leaps and bounds better individual players. the suns were stacked and d'antoni's system is why nash got all the assists. he was nothing close to that type of player on dallas under a regular set offense.

@@kennethgriffin7921 I can tell you didn't watch those seasons. The Suns revolutionzed the NBA with their offense. It wasn't about stats. It was the impact Nash made on the team. He orchestrated everything. He deserved the MVP both years.
I’m so glad Nash is saying this, like, it’s all I was thinking about with him in the Suns...he just didn’t look for his shot enough. I think he would’ve been much higher on the all-time list if he would’ve done that...& I believe you can hear that regret in his voice. But, hindsight is 20/20 he was still my favorite player to watch in the league during his prime...but with his gifts at that time period, I think he could’ve reached top ten all-time if he shot more early as he was by far the best player on that team...not even a close second.

It's absolutely insane to think of memories watching those Suns teams. They were pushing the pace hard and the style was revolutionary, but then you compare it to the modern day and it's the slowest pace in the league with the least 3's. Absolutely insane.

As a Suns fan, I was so frustrated when Nash would pass up everything besides a wide open shot. But guess what? That’s why he was a legendary playmaker and shot 50/40/90. Who knows if he had taken more contested shots.

Steve Nash is the player that really "changed the game." Everyone else took the league he made to the next level. Congratulations to them, but don't erase what Steve and those Suns did.
I'm sorry but this is horseshit. Steve's suns did not change the game, they did not change the way other teams and players set up, they didn't change the shots people were taking, they didn't change the type of players who got paid, they didn't change anything.
The warriors strategy was so dominant that it literally changed how basketball in the NBA is played, it was so effective that even the skeptics couldn't deny it. They have changed the whole paradigm in such a fundamental way that to suggest the suns did anything even remotely close is offensive.

You have conveniently glossed over the fact the Steve Kerr became the Suns GM while Steve Nash was already the dominant player in Pheonix, Alvin Gentry was a D'Antoni assistant, a head coach to Steve, and literally installed the SAME offense they had in Pheonix, as the offensive coordinator in Golden State. So much so that Alvin Gentry's post-championship comment to the media was, "Tell Mike D'Antoni he's been vindicated." Mike D'Antoni DID NOT run that offense when he was the head coach in Denver. Steve was the only established player on that Suns team (many went on to become "established players") so Mike geared the offense around him. Nash NEVER played with Golden State yet he is a consultant for their team and has been. The Warriors went from 7th place to the best team ever, by simply changing their player's deployment to what Kerr observed in PHEONIX. Karl Malone said he never ran the pick and roll in the "high" position (near the top of the key) the side PNR was standard in the NBA until the Steve Nash Suns. With all due respect to one of history's great teams, they have never done anything offensively that the Spurs, Suns or Bulls didn't do... NOTHING. "21/pistol" "high pick and roll" "pace and space" "slot action" and running to the corners were all Suns innovations and they are ALL standard play now. Now those are FACTS. If you have something other than just insistence and narrative please enlighten me. I'm always open to learning more about basketball.

Steve Nash would be on what Stephen Curry’s level is today. I used Nash in NBA2k7 playing in that “find the three” style, killin em. I hope to see Steve Nash coaching one day in the NBA with a PG of similar caliber to him.

Make no mistake, the Suns CRUSHED Cleveland twice that same year. San Antonio went on to sweep them but Phoenix would have as well. David Stern decided the championship when he suspended the Suns' leading scorer and his main back up at the same time.

I can’t think of David Stern without thinking about how he allowed this series to get fixed by a rule technicality. The suspensions, which in turn gave the Spurs the ‘07 title, are part of Stern’s legacy.

Think about what you are saying and what im saying. Im telling you facts and you are speculating. Spurs still had to play the Cavs and anything could have happened during that series maybe Duncan would have got hurt, maybe Parker or Ginobilli would have gotten hurt. Maybe the cavs would have gotten hot, but we know that didn’t happen. Another set of facts for you. From 2003-2008 the Spurs eliminated the suns from the playoffs all of which nash was on the suns so maybe just maybe the suns were just not built to handle the Spurs. You on the other hand is speculating and accusing stern of “giving” the Spurs the titl, speculating that the suns would have beat the cavs. Anything could have happened but didn’t. noremaC Yeah no shit but among players that have at least a 35% career 3 point percentage and averaged at least one 3 pointer per game for their career, he is 6th all time in true shooting percentage, which is the best statistic for shooting once you add in the two other factors I mentioned.

This man never gets talked about anymore. He could control a game with 10 points and 10 assists. The only people that understand my comment are those that saw Nash play.
My favorite player to watch. He was so good with his off hand. Most ambidextrous player I have seen, passing, dribbling, shooting. Absolutely the best passer I have ever seen. Four time member of the 50-40-90 club and missed a fifth time by just one made free throw. Could score when needed (48 against Dallas in ayoffs). He was the best shooter over a decade from more places the floor than anybody, Ray Allen number two. Just an exceptional player.

Steve Nash should be a regular guest on sports talk shows. He was indeed very conversative with his shots. He was making tham and then suddenly would just keep on passing when he could have taken over.
Man, miss these games so much. Am a huge Nash fan, and used to hate the spurs because they were so dirty but in this smart, wily way. It was such an amazing rivalry watching the upstarts with their small, crafty hero with a giant heart take on this well oiled, disciplined, cunning almost sinister feeling spurs squad.
Damn, but funny thing is, Manu was my second favorite player. And one of my favorite plays of his, and for my money it was the definition of a wily play, in that its kind of clever but also completely underhanded, was this one time, as the broadcast was cutting to a commercial, they showed a replay of Amare trying to run after a rebound and, in slow mo, you see he like struggle for a second, then he points down, and the camera pans down and Manu is legit holding his leg, like something out of a cartoon.
Man, dont wanna sound like an old man, but im just not sure there are these kind of compelling characters, heated rivalries, or like paradigm defining clashes of ideology in todays league.
I live in Phoenix. Saw that team play in person about 15 times. Miss those days

Nash is easily in my top 3 favorite players to watch - not saying GOAT or anything. But I loved Nash's game and wish I could've watched him play in today's game. Those Suns/Spurs games were amazing to watch.
People dont appreciate how good that era was. The western conference was too good.. Every playoff game was worth watching unlike in the east were you knew who was going to win until the conf Finals. Nash is my favorite player right next to Kobe. Todays basketball just isn't as fun to watch as it was then. I hated watching the Sun's era come to an end.
What it really comes down to is who’s the most exciting to watch. People get too into stats and winning sometimes. Gotta remember sports are entertainment FIRST and everything else second. If it’s not entertaining who gives a shit, and Nash has always had that entertaining aspect (while also being super efficient)
@@JakeMCGreen Nash was the definition of a crafty SOB. He was towards the bottom of the league when it comes to athleticism with average height and speed for a pg, but he managed to do things nobody else could do like him. He was a playmaking genius with pure scoring abilities.

Honestly Steve is the best offenSive PG in the last three decades. If you think about it, they was nothing he couldn’t do offensively. He made everyone better, he could shoot from anywhere, and he could finish.

The NBA pushes certain teams/players and have the refs carry it out.
This was the most bullshit moment in a league with a lot of bullshit moments. Read the damn room and let the players finish the series, not the refs.

Nobody says Shaq should have won them... People say Kobe should have won them and they are right. Kobe was clearly the best player in the league both years that Nash won it, but he was ignored because people didn't like his personality and the cloud of his court case was still hanging over him.

That's why Steve Nash is one of my favorite players of all time. He's the PG that makes everyone better, not a shooting guard playing point like Steph Curry and Derrick Rose in his prime. Averaged 11 assists a game in his prime, And he was an incredible shooter. Dude shot 43% from 3 and 90% from the line. Well deserved back to back MVPs. People forget how good he was.
Interestingly enough though, he's saying in the video perhaps he shouldn't have been that player though and been more of a scorer.
@@rdtworld9720 Nash scored plenty of points, but if he was just a scorer I don't think he wins those MVPs.
@@aznnp77 did you even watch the video? There's a whole portion of the video where he realizes mathematically he should have been shooting more.
