I think CoD almost always tried to send a message with its campaigns until World at War. The "War Is Hell" theme (literally during the nuke scene) was already explored in CoD 4, and CoD 1-3 did a good job of immersing you as another soldier in stressful situations on the field rather than a supersoldier who handles things easily with lazer beam weapons and HP regen. Since MW2 they've tried to be a regular ass action flick (which isn't bad necessairly) and then tried to make a "statement" again with WW2/MW 2019, but failed horribly.
Now that I think about it, BO2 & BO3 could've been impactful if they went more in detail about the horrors of drone warfare & body modification as the initial teasers implied.

I agree and want to emphasize the potential bo3 had. The teasers gave me so much hype for the campaign, and it just wasn’t what was implied through the teasers. It mainly only expressed the mental augmentation side of things imo.

I remember when my cousin came over and was at the age where he didn't play games much anymore so he gave me his copy when I was like 8 or 9 and vividly remember going through the campaign with him. and as soon as he was about to leave. the zombies cutscene played. I still have the unsettling nerve playing that zombies because everything about it was just perfect with how scary it was. such a shame to see the potential cold war could of had but activision just ruins it with pay to play content.

I agree with most of the video but I gotta say that WW2 was nowhere near being the fight of “good vs evil” There’s one clear worse side but the game does a great job showing that our side aren't heroes. And by all you said, you proof that too
