    Super helpful video. Thank you both, ladies. I love the ideas, the experience, the perspective and the chill presentation. 👍🏼🙏🏼 Also, wanted to point out that eBay and REI’s “garage sale” helped me to save money. Amazon didn’t save me much. I tried to buy a budget “ultralight” tent from them and when I arrived it was 4lbs heavier than expected 🤷🏻‍♀️ just my experience.

      Great tip! I work at REI and I’ve bought stuff from the garage sales and sometimes the deal there is better than my discount.

    Resupply shipping to myself is costly mailing but able to cut serving sizes into several boxes. $15.00 prepackaged backpacking foods are ridiculously expensive. I could eat out at a local restaurant. But, grocery store dried foods are good. And, no postage to resupply. Just have to figure it out. I am planning to not eat out much & not hostel much. Will keep in mind work for stay or food. Looking into dehydrating some foods.

    Good info. I agree that the $2 per mile is very old. With the inflation that is coming, double it to $4 per mile or $1500 per month. Good Luck, Rick

    I do the same thing as you when it comes to name brand resupply groceries! I always get the generic when possible but I do NOT mess with generic oatmeal anymore. For whatever reason I think there's a huge drop in quality/flavor of generics compared to Quaker Oats.

      Sugar, I 100% agree. For awhile I just felt like I was being picky but the more I compared the two I definitely can taste the difference.

    I've never heard thru hikers talk about health insurance. Like many, I get my insurance through my job and if I leave my job, I lose it. Do hikers temporarily buy insurance on the ACA Exchange? Maybe visit their Doc prior to the hike for an emergency supply of antibiotics and get some booster shots? Sorry... I sound like everyone's mother 😉 but, I imagine this is a cost some are concerned with. ...or maybe not, because of the wicked-stupid-high insurance deductibles. Thanks for the videos, you've addressed some interesting topics others have not.

    • @taratreks
      @taratreks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are health insurance companies designed for travelers at good cost. My husband and I used medishare but never really needed it out there. I did visit my doctor before trail and got some anti limes diseases antibiotics just in case!

    Expect a 25--30% price increase on a total thru hike. Resupply, shuttles, hostels, hotels ect ect.
    I expect the biggest price increase to come from shuttles.
    Fuel has nearly doubled, So I would imagine what used to be a $50 shuttle ride is now going to be $75-$85.
    Even stuff at Dollar General has went up. In my area a tuna packet was $1, now it's $1.25-1.50+

    Hi! Thank you for this video. Would you mind expanding a little on the blogging gig? I'm gearing up for a thru hike in 2024 and have some writing experience, so that sounded like a really cool idea. Do you have to already have an online following? Thanks again!
