According to various myths, the Morin khuur's origin story differs, but the most popular story is about Sukhee who discovered a young horse next to its dying mother. Sukhee adopted the foal and took good care of it. One day, Sukhee entered a horse race and surprisingly won, even defeating the local governor who was known for being evil. However, Sukhee found his beloved horse dead that night, shot with arrows. In his grief, his horse came to him in a dream and instructed him to use its bones, skin, and tail to create an instrument similar to a fiddle so they could remain together. Sukhee did so, and the instrument is believed to have a sorrowful sound.
Since then, the Morin khuur has been considered a sacred instrument that holds the spirit of the horse within it. It is believed that when the instrument is played, the horse's spirit is awakened and it brings good luck and protection to those who hear its sound. The mysticism and magic of this legend have added to the allure and appeal of the Morin khuur, making it a truly unique and cherished part of Mongolian culture.
